Grand Duke Horst I passes, Crown Prince Wilhelm II becomes Grand Duke
October, 4371

Wolfsheim - Grand Duke Horst I (b. b. December 4310) passed away earlier on October 11th, 4371 peacefully in his sleep. The aging Grand Duke suffered a series of health set-backs in March of this year and eventually was confined to a hospital bed in the palace in September. Crown Prince Wilhelm, son of the Grand Duke, has taken up the throne as Grand Duke Wilhelm II. The Grand Duke made a statement to the Eastern Land Council announcing that he had appointed Friedrich Tanius von Desidier as the new State Minister of the Grand Duchy of Ostland. The von Desidier family is notable Lorman Dorvish family that has ties to Ostland and has served in a variety of positions within the Ostland government as well as the Dorvish government. The Grand Duke, also a Major General in the Ostland Landwehr and the former Minister of Defense (having resigned when he took up the post of Grand Duke) has announced a major push to expand and re-build the Landwehr due to the outbreak of war on the western border of Ostland.

The program of settlement in Southern Ostland has been a success, the Main Office of Settlement, an office of the Ministry of Public Welfare, has reported that there has been an increase of settlers by 2% each year. The Grand Duke commented on the program and stated that one of his first acts as Grand Duke would be to push forward with a more focused agenda for settlement. The Grand Duke also hinted at a major constitutional reform within the coming months. Rumors of a Constitutional State Council have been abound when the then-Crown Prince had been seeing visiting numerous politicians from Ostland's small political party scene. The Crown Prince by trade is a lawyer, and serves as a board member of the Eastern Association of Lawyers.

Grand Duchy restored; new Grand Duke promises Dovani leadership
April, 4415

Wolfsheim - King of Ostland Freidrich I was announced to have passed away due to a riding accident on the outskirts of Wolfsheim. Crown Prince Magnus was taken to Wolfsheim and was assigned as Regent of the Kingdom. Upon royal decree the Crown Prince and Regent announced that the Kingdom of Ostland would return to its Grand Ducal status, he noted that the disputes involving the lineage and the odd coronation of his father as a "King" had caused rifts within the nobility. Several days after his fathers death on April 7th, 4415 the Crown Prince and Regent had the Federal Assembly pass a new and updated constitution, restoring much of the institutions of the previous Grand Duchy. On April 11th the Crown Prince and Regent was appointed as the new Grand Duke of Ostland and announced that Karsten von Prochnow, a member of the Eastern Homeland Association would be appointed as the new State Minister. Grand Duke Magnus noted in his coronation speech that Ostland was standing at the forefront of a new "historical movement" and one that would "launch Ostland into the world."

The event was heavily guarded by members of the Ostland Landwehr with an obvious presence of the Volksdundorfische Cultural Association's Security Service, which were personally thanked by the new Grand Duke for assisting in overseeing his transition from King to Grand Duke. The brown-uniformed VDKV personnel were in attendance in force, notably from the Political Leadership Corps, which make up some of the largest membership numbers of the VDKV. The Grand Duke's speech was in two-parts, on being before the people gathered in Wolfsplaatz, immediately outside of the Grand Duke's residence in Wolfsheim and one made before the Eastern Land Council, the legislature of Ostland. Ostland's returning Eastern Land Council was appointed directly by the Grand Duke and elections are set to take place in January, 4416.

Grand Duke announces end to Freikorps, responds to Hulstrian State Minister

Wolfsheim - Grand Duke Magnus has announced that the “Freikorps” will be ended. Some units will be folded into the Landwehr and others into the permanently established Security Service units within Ostland. The VDKV’s paramilitary will be officially recognized as a government paramilitary force. The VDKV will also run candidates within the Eastern Land Council, they will function as a political party, or will operate as a political wing. The Grand Duke welcomes the VDKV’s introduction into Ostland and are welcome to continue their long-standing friendship and cooperation.

The Grand Duke also responded to Hulstrian Vice State Minister Karolu Mori stating “Kunihito have been returning in droves to Hulstria; they’re welcome to stay and we’ve only taken land that was historically proven to belong to Hulstrian’s and Dundorfian’s. This new era historical revisionism that Ostland was Kunihito is damaging to the history of the Hulstrian people themselves. Ostland was once a major center for Hulstrian culture but when the Hulstrian government began to have problems with its Kunihito citizens, it deported them to Ostland.” The Grand Duke went on to add “Hulstria is no longer our “master” we are a sovereign and independent nation, we cast off the yoke of false Emperors a long time ago. We don’t serve them and they don’t tell us how to act.”

Karsten von Prochnow, the Ostland Minister of State also noted that it had not been a policy of the Ostland government to confiscate Kunihito land in several years. Instead what the current administration’s does is buy the land back in return for priority return to Hulstria. The policy has been widely successful and the population of Kunihito has continued to decrease steadily over the course of the 2 years that the Grand Duchy has been restored.

Ostland responds to Hulstria

Grand Duke Magnus alongside Dtate Minister von Prochnow held a press conference to discuss sanctions being placed on Ostland. “It is interesting that the current Hulstrian government continues to insist we’re following the same policies of previous governments. The resettlement program has been stopped for quite sometime; we’ve offered incentives for Kunihito to return to Hulstria where generally, they are more numerous.” The State Minister chimes in and noted “We also don’t understand that the claim that were Dundorfian settlers, were Hulstrian’s. Many of us are Hulstrian’s, some are Dorvish, some are Dundorfian...sure but we’re mostly Hulstrian.”

The Grand Duke added that “Hulstria forgot about Ostland, they pushed their criminal element here and now that we’re sovereign they want us back. This is textbook neo-colonialism. Hulstria wants us as another Crownland, despite overtures and guarantees that Dovani nations won’t become colonial societies again...they’ve done everything in their power to make sure they hold us back.” The State Minister ended with “The nations imposing sanctions have not reached out, have not looked to us and asked our side of the story. Instead they’re being lead by a false narrative pushed by the Hulstrian government and its being peddled to the world.”

Ostland responds to failure of Hulstria sanctions

Wolfsheim - State Minister von Prochnow spoke today regarding the failure of Hulstria to ratify their own sanctions against Ostland. The State Minister spoke with representatives from the Eastern Hulstrian People’s Party, the New Dawn Party (Kunihito political party) and the VDKV’s Political Leadership Corps on the sanctions. “We appreciate fellow citizens in Kazulia who didn’t go forward with the narrative that Hulstria is peddling. Unfortunately we see this more and more today.” A representative from the New Dawn Party noted that the relations between Ostlanders and Kunihito have improved since Grand Duke Magnus has taken over, ending the Freikorps was a step in the right direction.

Ostland General elections bring surprising results
November, 4418

Wolfsheim - General elections in Ostland were held on November 1st and last until the early hours of November 2nd, several political parties and organizations competed in elections to the 250 seat Eastern Land Council. The largest, a coalition of the Eastern Hulstrian People's Party, the Eastern Homeland Association, the Political Leadership Corps and the Kunihito's New Dawn Party took up 247 seats with 3 seats being failed to fill. The 3 failed seats will be appointed by the Grand Duke as constitutionally mandated. State Minister Karsten von Prochnow was announced to remain as State Minister, a bevy of appointments is expected within the coming weeks for posts within the government. The elections show a clear mandate and continued support for the new era of Grand Duke Magnus. The Grand Duke will make an inaugural speech when Eastern Land Council is sworn in on November 5th. A notable news event regarding this elections is that of the 148 incumbents that were up for re-election, only 27 were re-elected, many of them having served in previous governments of Ostland and were offered generous state retirements.

Ostland's economic future has been looking up, the restoration of services to the Kunihito dominated south of country as well an increase in trade despite attempts at sanctions by Hulstria, which have fallen on deaf ears. The Ministry of Economics and Finance released a promising economic report in October, 4418 which shows that the Wolfsheim Stock Exchange will resume operations after nearly a decade closed, laws are proposed that will be voted on by the new Eastern Land Council to open up trade and continue to welcome foreign investment, notably from neighboring Dovani nations.

Ostland seeks Northern Council ties; Law on Societal Integration and Protection passed
November 4419

Wolfsheim - Minister of State Karsten von Prochnow spoke earlier today at a regular press conference held by the Ministry of State where he noted that he had planned on reaching out to Northern Council members; notably Hutori and Kazulia. Main Office of Foreign Affairs, headed by State Secretary Eckart Leiber was placed in charge of expanding Ostland's foreign position. Ostland has been seeking allies continually since the General elections held in November, 4188. Wolfsheim has been developing a massive port project along it's eastern coast, notably at Ebenhofen where it is expected that Ostland is developing military capable port structures, possibly for a naval expansion or potentially to rent out to close allies. State Secretary Leiber spoke at the press conference when asked about the potential for diplomatic growth. "We obviously want to expand, in light of incredibly incorrect allegations made by Hulstria, we want to show the world that we aren't what Hulstria says we are. Relations with Hutori and Kazulia are a cornerstone to success in Ostland. The expansion of ports along the Sea of Carina is an important economic improvement and we are eagerly awaiting to see what will happen when these projects finish." The Main Office of Foreign Affairs is likely to reach out and meet with the two countries.

Despite the recent sanctions involving several countries, Ostland has continued to press forward. Law on Societal Integration and Protection passed the Eastern Land Council and allowed, for the first time, Kunihito citizens to hold senior government posts. The Grand Duke held a large ceremony in early November where he announced that the Main Office of Kunihito Welfare would be led by State Secretary Major General Oba Yukinaga, a leading member of the General Affairs State Council, a collection of New Dawn members which was formed by Grand Duke Magnus following the passage of the Law on Societal Integration and Protection. Political experts suspect that the move was ushered in following sanctions; but it was a legislative agenda set out by the Grand Duke's own household that laid the foundation for a more integrated society. Upon his appointment State Secretary Major General Yukinaga stated "The Grand Duke has blessed me with this opportunity and has allowed the General Affairs State Council to dominate Kunihito's true welfare. My first announcement to the Eastern Land Council is that Wakasugi Tomohiko will become the state appointed as the Gebietsoberkommissar for Jamidaka, the center for Kunihito in Ostland. Jamidaka is also going to be the site of a major port expansion, the largest of it's kind and the first major civilian-military port operated in a Kunihito majority area." The announcement of the passage of the legislation also sent the Wolfsheim Stock Exchange into a trading frenzy, seeing shares gain in most categories.

Minister of the Interior Florian Jörn von Völknitz-Siezenhaus announced that the State Police would be dismantling the Freikorps starting in December and will finish in January of 4419.

Grand Duke authorizes partial autonomy in the south, guarantees for loyalty
March, 4419

Jamidaka, Southern Ostland - Grand Duke Magus met today with Main Office of Kunihito Welfare State Secretary Major General Yukinaga and Gebietsoberkommissar for Jamidaka Wakasugi Tomohik regarding the partial autonomy being granted to the Kunihito in the southern peninsula of Ostland. The royal decree focuses on shoring up several issues that the Grand Dukes believes will be solved by granting the Kunihito an enclave in the south. Grand Duke Magnus will likely seek a rubber stamp from the Eastern Land Council on this issue in the coming months but it is a welcome change for many Kunihito, thousands gathered in Jamidaka to celebrate and praise the Grand Duke who has officially placed the General Affairs State Council as the governing body of the now partially autonomous south part of the country. The autonomy allows the Kunihito to govern aspects of their own affairs, allows them to maintain government posts as well as pass specific legislation for their area. The move is widely seen as a means to quell international tension as well as stimulate the failing southern economy which is more agriculturally based then the north which is far more industrial and commercial.

The Touryou State will be the name of the autonomous enclave of Kunihito in the south will serve the means of most Kunihito citizens and the Ostland government will assist in any Kunihito that wishes to settle in the south eastern autonomous state. The General Affairs State Council which will be headed by a Chief Minister and assisted by an appointed Legislative Council (by the Grand Duke) from members of the Eastern Land Council will efffectively give the Kunihito legislative authority over their own affairs, the Touryou State however accepts that they must swear fealty and an oath of loyalty to the Grand Duke. Some Kunihito, once opposed to the Grand Duke, have called for the Grand Duke to accept Kunihito titles and nobility as a means to ensure that they retain their autonomous status. Grand Duke Magnus has remained that he wants the Kunihito to understand that while they may belong to a different governing entity, they are Ostlander's first and foremost.

The continued progressiveness of the Grand Duke has been met with some criticisms but overall the Grand Duke and State Minister have remained very popular. Economically, Ostland is building a stable future such as expanding the ports on the eastern portion of the country (with attempts to lure the Northern Council into the Sea of Carina), the re-opening of the Wolfsheim Stock Exchange as well as focusing on the social welfare programs aimed to reducing the nearly 14% unemployment of Ostland's nearly 70 million citizens. The Grand Duke also decreed that former members of the Freikorps would be permitted to merge with the Ostland Landwehr or would be eligible to retire with a state-funded pension. The Eastern Land Council recently voted in favor of the "Law on Pensions and Public Assistance to Retired Workers" which forms a compulsory state pension that will be paid out at age 60. It is the first of its kind in Ostland. People at pensioner age are eligible but receive a lesser rate due to having paid in less. The formation of the Main Office of Social Welfare Program (Hulstrian: Hauptamt für soziale Wohlfahrtsprogramme) and the appointment of Gregor Hans von Lieben-Volkz as the State Secretary in charge of the program has left many looking to the future as the program gets underway. The Ministry of Economics and Finance will also work with the new Touryou State in the establishment of the Jamidaka Stock Exchange which will focus primarily on Kunihito-owned and operated businesses; it is expected to be underway and operational in January, 4421.

Information regarding the Ostland Landwehr has been scarce but the return of the Grand Duke has seen a large investment into the military, it is reported that Ostland will locally produce 4 Kordusian-class frigates under license from Dorvish companies and will retain the license to produce them. The guided missile frigates will serve as the bulk of the Ostland military, which has remained one of the primary military powers in the former colonial nations of Dovani. Ostland has received support from several dozen wealth supporters, many of them who hail from the VDKV and their wide variety of financial supporters throughout the world. The Grand Duke recently appointed Generaloberst Paul von Theilen zu Wiest as the new Chief of Staff of the Ostland Landwehr and the Dorvish and Dundorfian-trained former Hulstrian Army officer will seek to build Ostland into a regional military power.
