Leaked Documents Reveal Oliver Gregurek Assassination Carried Out By Kata Horvat

Kata Horvat, the successful former Socialist leader who led the Socialist forces through much of the Civil War's early days, was today arrested by police after it emerged in a leaked document that the assassination of first wartime Populist leader and former Statrican President, Oliver Gregurek, was not in fact executed by the malicious Monarchist government. Instead, it seems, the move was made by Kata Horvat.

While Horvat spoke of freedom, democracy and peace, it seems she was willing to play a violent game with Republican politics. With tensions growing behind the scenes over what to do with Rozna, the Province that once declared independence under Adofo Okafor all those years ago at the dawn of war, Horvat feared their alliance may break down. Some say Gregurek almost walked out of the room when Horvat proposed an armed suppression of the illegal secessionist movement.

Under these circumstances, Horvat decided the best solution was to remove Gregurek from power. While the document claims a peaceful solution was explored, none could have been quickly executed, and so a clandestine assassination operation took place, eliminating Gregurek in the dead of night while blaming it all on the Monarchists.

The police continue to hold Kata Horvat on suspicion of war crimes. She is expected to plead guilty at a trial in the coming months, earning her a sentence of up to life imprisonment (although a lighter sentence is expected).

Aleksandar Novac, Populist leader and President, admits to ordering the documents remain secret for the good of the union. After public outrage he has declared that he will not stand in the upcoming election over the issue, though he himself faces no charges.

Election: Adofo Okafor Wins Presidency, Forms Coalition with Socialists

After the shocking revelations of last month, the Presidential race was really a no-brainer. Adofo Okafor, former Tribal Defence Force leader, President of Rozna and leader of the Equality Party, won the vote with a landslide majority of almost 70%. He is the only one of the four original commanders who have survived the Civil War, to some criticism, with some claiming his forces didn't do enough and some even blaming him for starting the war by supporting independence. Regardless, Okafor, who is of Asli descent, was the only credible candidate after the Populist leader Novac dropped out of the race and the weak campaign of the Socialist candidate.

In the legislature, however, the story was different. Equality got 27% of the seats, but lost out to the Socialists, who gained a massive 35% of the seats. The parties have agreed, however, to form a coalition government with a strong leftist slant, which has a strong majority of more than 60%. It's likely that the ruins of the city streets will become strong breeding grounds for socialist economics, with the country heading on a direct path to left-wing politics. It will, at least, suppress the Red Balaclavas, a potentially violent revolutionary Socialist group who emerged just months ago.

The Conservative party, formed from the ruins of the Monarchists, gained just 14% of the votes, and the Populists got just 24% of the seats.

This country has a great many problems and dilemmas to face. But it seems that from this crippled state, Statrica has become a land of opportunity: the old order has been torn down, and the Statrican people now have the freedom to construct a new future -- or to break it down.

New Endralonian Police Expected to Assist with Securing Peace in the Republic

President Okafor is believed to have requested the aid of New Endralon to help police the unstable republic as the nation builds its future. With the scars of war still fresh, Statrican Hosianism and far-right extremism still taking a hold in some areas of the country, and the possibility of this divided nation falling to the knees of the Statrican "Queen" Ana Perica and her father, Edvard Perica, currently staying in New Englia where they were granted asylum, this decision makes complete sense. The nation is too poor to police everything itself, with much of the economy wrecked after the war. However, some have expressed fears that New Endralon will use this as an opportunity to turn Statrica into a satellite state, and some fear the country could be eventually drawn into a foreign war just to stay stable...

December 4338
The State of the Nation: A Short Essay

Was it worth it?

The question seems controversial, even criminal, in the barren landscapes of post-war Statrica, caught up in the spirit of Republicanism and freedom. But the question must be asked: was it worth it?

The Civil War first reared its ugly head ten years ago when negotiations broke down and the nation fell into political chaos. From this political chaos rose years of death, destruction, violence, a coup, a dictatorship... Domonkos, Gregurek and countless innocent people and brave fighters have died because of the war, our infrastructure lies in ruins, our economy is almost completely collapsed.

Our politics remains uncertain: far-right voices lie hidden in the masses, many ready to dedicate themselves to the self-declared Queen, Ana Perica, exiled to New Englia, its close ally. (Though Okafor says he has no intention of getting them back through force, he has utilised economic sanctions on the nation until her and her father, former King Edvard Perica, are extradited to face justice.) Countless Monarchist officers and troops sit in limbo, waiting to know whether they'll be charged for their actions during the war. Socialist revolutionaries stir in the East.

Where great leaps are made when dealing with race equality under the Asli President, a thousand other problems lie in wait for the new government. Do we persecute New Englia? Do we bow down to New Endralon, or refuse their aid? Do we take decisive action against right-wing Monarchists, or will this act sacrifice the very democracy we fought for?

But while all these questions might indicate an undercurrent of instability running through Statrican politics, questions bring answers. Questions are opportunity. And if that isn't what the war was fought for, what was it for?

OOC: That's me done in Statrica for now! I'm looking to relocate to Istapali, working alongside Pragma and controlling about half of the country, so that's where I'll be for the foreseeable!

The Perica family is off in New Englia with Phil Piratin, where he'll be continuing that story.

Statrica itself is hopefully now a lot more developed and has a bit more of an identity, but is also left as open, fertile ground for any future RPers to pick things up in the (perhaps very distant) future.

Thanks for reading, getting involved, helping out or whatever! Adieu.

Almost 29 Years Since the Start of the Statrican Civil War, Adofo Okafor Dies Aged 81

Image
Okafor's statue stands in the capital, erected shortly after he left politics in 4346

The first president of the newly-reborn Republic of Statrica, Adofo Okafor, a key figure from the Civil War and the man credited with rebuilding Statrica in the years following the war, died last night aged 81.

The former president took office for 8 years before deciding not to run in the 4346 election. Of Asli descent, the man commanded the Tribal Defence Forces in the Civil War and was one of the last living commanders from that era after Socialist leader Kata Horvat, who was charged with the assassination of Oliver Gregurek, died two years ago of terminal illness. Aleksandar Novac remains resigned from politics in its entirety.

Okafor helped to rebuild Statrica after the war in a skillful string of political victories, establishing a capitalist system open to international trade that helped grow the economy massively, while imposing high taxes on the wealthy to re-establish countless public services. He managed to appease and dissolve the threat of socialist terror and revolution while carving his name into the annals of history as the man who re-established the police, fire and ambulance services in their entirety, built the foundations of what has become now a developing but nonetheless free public health system, re-built strong transport links to establish proper supply lines and economic transport systems, established racial equality laws across the country...

Suffice to say that when Okafor left politics in 4346, he was widely considered one of the most influential figures in Statrican history. Without his input, we probably wouldn't be standing in such a stable nation today. He brought political unity and peace to a nation struck through with division, and built the Republic from dirt to a fully functioning society.

We still have a long way to go before the scars of war are fully removed from the public concern, but Okafor's death has hit Statricans across the whole political spectrum hard.

Rest in peace, Adofo.

Election: Statrica Welcomes Ada Madaki, First Female President Since the Civil War

Ada Madaki won the Presidential elections last night with a strong 61.3% margin in the polls, standing for the Socialist Party against the incumbent People’s Equality Party candidate, Benjamin Kuzmić, widely criticised for a lack of ambition and drive.

The Socialists have been gradually building up their political strength over the last twenty years, after Kata Horvat was ousted as the main organiser once Gregurek’s death at the end of the Civil War, disgracing the party (which had already seen its forces collapse to the Monarchists in battle.) After their first term in coalition government under Okafor, they were sidelined to Okafor’s Equality Party and lost a huge proportion of the votes. Now, the radical, leftist, progressive party has won its first election in years after a string of close defeats.

Their recent burst of popularity appears to have exploded from the immensely popular leader and now President, Ada Madaki, who is of Asli descent. Madaki is the first female President since the Civil War, winning votes with her frank progressive stance and radical socialist economic policies.

Her critics say she will bring about an age of economic regression; her supporters say she will capitalise on Statrica’s growing economy while building a fairer society. Which will be the case? Only time will tell.

The Socialists also made strong gains in the Assembly, forming a majority government with just over half (52%) of the vote — a further 45% went to the centrist People’s Equality Party, which was famously formed from a merger between the Populists and Okafor’s Equality Party five years ago. Just 3% of the vote went to the New Right Party, the far-right successor of the failed, more moderate Conservative Party (itself born from the most moderate parts of the despised Monarchist party under “King” Perica, who lost the Civil War.)

Madaki Open to Stronger Relations With Hawu Mumenhes

After the President of Hawu Mumenhes offered his support for deceased Former President Adofo Okafor’s family and country, paying respects to his immense achievements in the wake of the Civil War and contributions towards peace, a political approach for a closer relationship was also offered. It is believed that the embassy in Statrica extended these wishes to President Madaki, who has publically offered her full support for a closer relationship “with all fellow nations who stand with us in brotherhood and sisterhood.”

Madaki Sparks Controversy With Proposal to Ban Private Inheritance Over 500,000 in Value

Anything worth over 500,000 Kuna should be completely taxed after death, President Madaki suggests in her latest controversial bill.

After winning difficult battles to form a fully Public healthcare system which exists side by side with the private system, completing Okafor’s work in this regard, as well as establishing costly public housing programs to provide affordable housing to the poorest areas of the country — often in rural areas still recovering from the war, where the strongest Socialist supporters can often be found — Madaki has decided to propose an even more radical idea.

The policy wasn’t included in her manifesto but was hinted at on the campaign trail, with the President saying we need ‘comprehensive inheritance reform.’

She has argued that up to 100,000 Statrican Kunas should be completely untaxed. In the modern economy, this is a relatively high figure. 20% of anything over 100,000 Kuna, but under 500,000 Kuna, in value should be taxed. Anything over 500,000 Kuna, however, should be completely inherited by the state.

With few people possessing more than 500,000 Kuna to bequeath to their children anyway, she has argued that we can shift the burden of inheritance tax on to the ultra-rich while maintaining a high level of income from this tax for the government. But inheritance tax is almost universally unpopular, studies show, and some argue the wealthiest figures in Statrica who drive our economy could buckle under the pressure of high taxes, or that it could discourage people from saving up any money to leave to their children and hinder ambition.

Others have claimed it could increase spending and boost the economy for the ultra—rich, while creating a fairer and more meritocratic system for the people.

Whatever your opinions, we’re sure to see some fiery debate on this and other topics in politics in the coming weeks and months, and Madaki could be facing her first major challenges. The generally unified Socialist Party could find itself divided and broken if Madaki isn’t careful; or it could emerge as the most radical and revolutionary party currently in the field, offering a clear vision for the future sure to win over voters. Only time will tell.
