King Introduces Limited Democratisation
December 4518

Kgosi (King) Mohlabi has announced the introduction of a legislature - the first ever in the Kingdom. The King issued his much anticipated "Kgotla Decree" which empowers the traditional tribal council to make laws for the Kingdom. Its membership has also been expanded from 25 members to 65. The new members will be appointed from the major professional bodies and other public organisations. Political parties remain banned and the King shall retain the power to appoint all members and dissolve the body at will.

Batembo democrats have greeted the development with cautious optimism, calling on the King to go even further and allow full elections. They also reminded him that "Utembo was the cradle of democracy in Terra and the old kgoltas were fully participatory democratic bodies." The democrats are highly unlikely to realise their dreams anytime soon with all the disturbances in neighbouring Temania very much on Mohlabi's mind. The King has issued a statement of concern and sent his best wishes to "his friend", the Emperor Baldassare II.

Protests Grip Royal Capital
May 4519

Hundreds of protesters have gathered outside the Royal Residence Complex to call for "change". The protests have flashed out of nowhere and come following the trial acquittal of a Kazulian peacekeeper who had been accused of killing a Batembo teenager. Tensions over constitutional reforms, intense dislike of the Kazulo-Talmorian peacekeeping force and high inflation had kept many Batembo on edge and the acquittal as well as the news of protests in neighbouring Temania has pushed many Batembo over that edge.

The royal court has called on the protesters to return to their homes and is blaming the protests on foreign intelligence agencies. Security forces have been deployed throughout the kingdom and no serious confrontations have been reported yet.

Powersharing Agreement Between Monarch and Protesters
January 4521

Talmorian Farin for Foreign Affairs Sekou Konate has successfully brokered an agreement between Kgosi Mohlabi and prominent opposition leaders in Utembo. Konate signed the agreement in the Batembo capital, Bajoum along the Kgosi, the head of the Kgotla (legislature) and the President of Batembo Democratic Progressive Front - a coalition of pro-democracy groups in Utembo. The agreements puts an end to two years of protests against the monarchy.

The agreement established a "government of national unity" composed of 15 royalist and 10 democrat ministers. The Kgotla will be expanded in membership from 65 to 90 members, of which the opposition will appoint 15 members. Talmoria itself has pledged to prove a 100 million LOD loan to help stabilise the Batembo economy and to organise investment by Talmorian businesses which the Farin said might create up to 2,000 jobs over the next five years. The vast majority of protest leaders have accepted the agreement although some have expressed concern over the fact that the royalists continue to hold all security-related government positions.

A New King!
June 4851

After the death of the last known descendant of King Mohlabi, the glorious nation of Utembo just spent the past 2 years looking for its new monarch. Many people were considered for the position. The Government of National Unity has now narrowed the options down to only three candidates.

The first one is Tsomo Chödak. Chödak is a 54-year-old who is a close friend of the late king. He worked as one of his closest advisors for over 20 years. He is a competent man who has, however, made many enemies throughout the years. Being such a close advisor to the king meant that many of his other advisors were ignored by his majesty. This has led to a lot of resentment from the rest of the advisors. These advisors have all rallied up behind our second candidate.

Her name is Sengi Norbu, and she is 72 years old. She is the head of the king's advisors, and up until the arrival of Chödak, the most prominent of them. She is widely considered as much more prepared for the position, as she brings experience that not many could have. She also has the support of the advisors, meaning that she will count with a lot of support that Chödak lacks.

The last candidate is native leader Durga Loday. Loday is an 84-year-old man and is the head of Xsampan Daenism in Utembo. He has the support of the vast majority of the Utemban people and is very respected. However, many are concerned about his age.

In the coming months, we will inform you of the official decision.

The Coronation of King Durga I
January 4852

A week ago the Government of National Unity made the official announcement that Durga Loday would be the first Xsampan King of Utembo. Today, we had his coronation in the Temple of Bajoum. He narrowly beat Sengi Norbu by only 2 votes. She was outraged and demanded that the vote should be held again, but to no avail. As for Tsomo Chödak, he received a measly 3 votes. With the winner being decided, the nation celebrated, as Loday was the favourite candidate for the position.

Thousands stood outside as King Durga arrived in a carriage. Coming from all over the country He slowly stepped out of the carriage and walked the 100 metres separating him from the church. He was received with overwhelming cheering. He then entered the cathedral, were the members of the Royal Advisory Board and the Government of National Unity received him. Another notable guest was the Foreign Minister of Liore, Chuma Jang. King Durga continued to walk until he reached the centre of the room, where a monk waited for him.

There the King knelt next to the monk. He then swore to protect Utembo and its people and to fulfil his duties as the King of Utembo. He was then dressed in the Royal Robes and the Crown was laid upon his head. Then the ceremony ended.

The Utembo Times wishes King Durga the First best of luck in his mandate.

3M in Utembo
December 4852

Today, Boros Erik, CEO of More Medicament Manufacture, visited Utembo and met with His Majestic Royal and Serene Highness, King Durga I. Together, they discussed 3M opening factories and stores in Utembo. After 3 days of intense negotiation, they came out of the Royal Palace and rose their hands together. They then held a press conference in which Boros Erik announced that 3M will be opening a series of new factories in Utembo. The factories are expected to create over 35 thousand jobs across the most rural areas of Utembo. In addition to this, it was agreed that More Medicament Manufacture will be opening stores in all major cities in Utembo. He then thanked King Durga I for giving 3M the opportunity to start business here in Utembo. To that, Kung Durga I thanked him for bringing healthcare and medicine closer to Utembo. They then left for a state dinner organised in honour of the Endralonian CEO.

Most people were happy to receive the news, as unemployment in Utembo is at a record 37.6%. Many hope to get a new job in one of the new factories. The notice of new stores was received even better, as many people in Utembo currently die from diseases that could be easily cured if proper access to healthcare was available.

Rebranding the Nation
January 4853

A year has passed since the coronation of His Majestic Royal and Serene Highness, King Durga I, and today it was announced that the country will receive a new flag. the flag is based on the coat of arms of the House of Loday, which is currently in power. It is the Kings first constitutional amendment.

The flag has been received with backlash, not because fo its design, but because it implies that the nations most important symbol is the King, not our culture, ideology or people. These protests, however, fell to deaf ears as the government proceeded with the official change. The flag is now being flown both on the top of the Royal Palace and other government institutions, as well as in the World Congress.

The Council of the Crown is abolished
July 4853

Today the announcement from Bajoum shocked everyone, as the King decided that the historic Council of the Crown is to be abolished. Everyone was surprised by these news, as the Council has existed for almost as long as Utembo. Many went out to the streets to protest the decision but to no avail. King Durga's word was final. Some of his advisors, who wished to remain anonymous, reached out to the Utembo Times and told us that the vast majority of the advisors were against the dissolution but they could not do anything.

The Council of the Crown used to share executive power with the King. Although the monarch could always overturn the decision made by the Council and would always have the final word, they were an important body that served to keep the monarch in check. With the Council now gone, the Royal Court, the Board of Ministers and the Government of National Unity are starting to get worried, fearing for their jobs, as it is possible that they too might go.

King Durga's son dies
June 4854

Tragic news from Bajoum today, as we received news that His Majestic Royal and Serene Highness's son, Prince Dem. He was reportedly involved in a car accident whilst travelling from Bajoum to Karosawa.

The news was received with widespread sadness. All over the country, families cried and prayed for the late prince. King Durga I himself went out to the streets of Bajoum to join a procession that marched to his cremation site.

Like it, many other processions across the country appeared. The Prince had been loved for he was very active with the general population and used to visit less privileged parts of the country to help. A national recess of three days was declared in order to mourn his death.

Prince Dem was the youngest of the King's 3 children and was 57 years old. He dedicated his life to religion and travelled around the country to spread it and to help those in need. Although he was not first in line for the throne, it is most certainly a disgrace to see his potential wasted, as he could have been an important figure in Utemban politics. Many speculate that he was in the shortlist to be our delegate to the World Congress.

His death has now also raised questions about the current King's age. He is now 87 years old and, although very healthy, his health could deteriorate at any moment. Although his firstborn son Prince Durga will be the next king, many believe that he will advocate for his own son, as Pince Durga is more than 60. Only time will tell.

"An Educated Utembo" Project
June 4855

Today, His Majestic Royal and Serene Highness King Durga announced a new project. His Majesty calls it the "An Educated Utembo" project.

The project, as explained by the King, looks to improve education in Utembo. Nowadays, many children have to either drop out of school at an early age or not finish it at all. Furthermore, vast areas of the country have little schools, meaning that students have to walk for hours to attend. Also, many teachers go on strike on weeks at a time because of the unfair wages that they are paid.

The project will improve all of these things. First, over 150 new schools will be built across the country to make education more accessible to all, especially to those who live in the Ring Po Mountains. There will also be established a nationwide basic income for all teachers that will be negotiated with them at a future date. This will be in order for the strikes to stop. Lastly, a family support program will also be in place. The program will give every family an amount of 20,000 Utembi Florins per month. Even though this is a very small amount, it aims to allow these children who have to leave school to work to go to work in the mornings and attend school at nights.

The program has already started rolling out, and schools are being built all over the country.
