Azeez prepares for battle in the capital as Medina runs out of tricks
Image

The war in Medina will come to an end, that is what the New Endralonian commander Hagi has claimed. And for certain, Medina is facing a hard time with Azeez's tricks almost up. The trained guerilla's motivated by the empire to attack the allied supply lines are almost all killed or captured, as the allies have defended their supplies and the lightly armed guerilla's aren't able to atack the supplies defended by armored vehicles. Most of the boobytraps and mines have been cleared by Lourennias and Confederal troops, and are now really close to the capital. The airforce has bombed important military targets, with little resistance. The old AA missiles aren't good enough to catch the Lourrenias on Confederal planes, the Medinese airforce isn't more than some old cargo helicopters and the AA guns can only do damage from close.

Azeez has at the same time fortified the entire city. All streets are guarded by the military, with countless of houses taken over by machine gunners, overlooking the entire city. It has even been reported that a tank is hidden in a house, build for this goal. AA guns are everywhere, but exept for reppeling possible helicopters they have little use. As boobietrapped as the suburbs, the battle for the capital will take very long.

Azeez Falls Back After Inflicting Massive Casualties on the Enemy

The battle for the capital continues to rage on as Azeez begins to pull his forces back in the face of immense pressure from the enemy on all fronts. Everyone watching the developments here has never been under the illusion that Azeez could ever have a large chance of outright victory, but the sheer amount of resistance he could put up, the sheer amount of damage he could deal to the enemy: this has been nothing short of astounding.

It is understood that in a series of deft manoeuvres over the course of the battle, with Azeez reportedly sleeping only a few hours a day and crafting his strategy with relentless energy, Azeez managed to halt — though not overcome — the Lourennnais assault, reinvigorate the remains of the militia to obliterate the remnants of the Statrican forces (now even forcing a withdrawal) with carefully planned, surgical attacks, obliterate many New Endralonian forces with ingenious traps and ambushes, all while pulling together a massive army combining Medinese, Istaplaian, Tropican, militia, police and civilian forces to put up his defence.

Azeez, yes, has lost the battle; he has lost much of his army and been forced to retreat. But he has not merely laid down and died: no, Azeez has destroyed his enemies in the process. Azeez has lost the battle, but has left his opponents in ruins.

The majority of the enemy forces are now killed or wounded; Statrica is withdrawing from the battle; the reputation of the enemy governments and the legitimacy of the war in the eyes of their people is forever tarnished. Azeez has secured the survival of the Medinese spirit, and left open a path for Mediniese revival — now, finally, he is falling back, leaving the land to the enemy. He and the royal family shall retreat to safety in Istapali, where the broken enemy will be unlikely to peruse them. Azeez has solidified his position in history as a legendary general, and carved his name into the annals of time. And yet something seems to suggest that his story is not quite over yet.

Farewell, Commander Azeez, Prince Wiqar. May we see you again soon.

The Courier View on the Battle for the Capital | Azeez is Playing the Long Game

Have we lost this war? Yes. But have we won a significant victory? Let us see.

How, you might be thinking, can you call this a victory? Our military decimated, our land in the hands of the enemy, our cities in ruins, our empire gone, our very system of government under threat... This, surely, can only be an abject failure?

Think, though, of what Azeez is really doing. Does it really make sense that he would suddenly lose all of his apparently legendary abilities in his final confrontation? That he would throw countless lives at the enemy when he knows he has no chance of victory?

Of course not! The man is a genius.

Azeez is not so naïve as to consider this war the be-all and end-all of the conflict. No, this is merely the first chapter in a much, much wider war.

Think of the situation we have left ourselves in; the government in exile, but still very much alive and secure; the enemy forces significantly weakened, the nation still filled with nationalistic pride; Azeez almost universally adored by the people while the Sultan is almost certain to abdicate his throne. The prospect of a second brutal war is anathema for the enemy, surely? And yet the security of Medina is left incredibly fragile, and the royal family remains not only very much alive, but has a figurehead of never-before-seen popularity within the nation, with the support of the people, the government and the army.

This is no mistake. Azeez knows that the spirit of Medina cannot, will not casually fade into insignifcance. Azeez knows that the people will not settle for a puppet government while a perfectly good alternative exists — and has carefully manouvred himself to be the most reasonable alternative. He may be almost last in line to the throne, but he is the only Sultan the people will truly love, and everyone knows it. Azeez is the saving grace for Medina and the royal family; Azeez is the future.

One day, there is little doubt, Azeez shall return, and the embers of Empire shall once again begin to roar into flame, like the Phoenix rising from the ashes. And the enemy will remember: and then, I am sure, Medina will be unstoppable. Medina will conquer, and, yes, Medina shall one day be able to look the likes of Dorvik and Kazulia, military giants, as equals, and colonial Dovani shall finally find its voice through it.

Medina has lost the battle, but could still very well win the war, and stories of these days shall echo throughout history for eternity.

What a time to be alive.

Republican Government Firmly Planted in Medina

Since the military was defeated, Azeez and the royal family fled to Istapali (where they still remain), and the resistance began to die down after years of riots, protests and violence, it appears now that the people are finally beginning to relax and embrace the new government, at least a little. Loyalty to Azeez remains high, but for how long will the people wait?

After the defeat of Medina in the great Medinese War, the International Coalition quickly set about creating a placeholder government and establishing a Republic, but only now is the Republican government finally becoming firmly planted in the nation. Now it is beginning to make reforms to various areas, trying to rebuild and increase Iran power. What can be salvaged from the former Medinese military is being united with fresh recruits to forge Medina in the new age as a stable, standard nation.

And yet the threat of Azeez’s foretold return continues to sit on the horizon... Does, perhaps, a return to violence seem nigh? Or will Medina take its first steps to democracy in peace?

Tambethra Family Flees To Medina
February 4410

Image
Above: President Amishana Suhanthra

The wealthiest family in Vanakalam, the Tambethra family, has fled to the nation of Medina to avoid the consequences of the actions of the government. As the government continues to forcibly seize property to put under state control, the Tambethras have already lost a large amount of money in the uncompensated government takeover of several of the companies they owned and had invested in. Multi-millionaire patriarch Surevan has attempted several times, according to the state Ministry of Finance, to dodge the newly increased levels of taxation and has refused to hand over legal rights to his property to the government. This has caused a massive rise in tensions between the wealthy family, the many people who live on their land communally and the government and wider public.

T. Surevan was formerly a major donor to President Suhanthra's rivals the Green Party, who lost all five of their seats including one held by Surevan's daughter Dyshini. T. Surevan has been a committed environmental activist, having invested in the creation of several carbon-negative "eco-villages" on his giant estate in the south of the country. However, President A. Suhanthra has made clear that, while she 'appreciates an attempt to create a sustainable community', is not confident in the ability of a businessman to create 'the kind of environment everyone in Vanakalam needs, a just and fair one. They would simply hoard resources and be detached from the wider national revolution'. Surevan has objected to the communist reforms of the new Communist government, who he believes are 'unfairly descending on the freedom of people to create efficient, socialist communities independently'.

A. Suhanthra has been clear in wanting the entire country to be united and all resources taken in and divided out across the nation without sub-national barriers or non-governmental arbiters. This has put her at odds with Surevan and fellow 'communal socialists', who Suhanthra doesn't trust to lead a 'true communist revolution'. These decisions have caused Surevan, wife Kavilaya, daughter Dyshini and sons Yohan and Kumar to flee to the troubled nation of Medina - a clear sign of issues brewing in Vanakalam. Amongst this chaos, it is still unknown whether Suhanthra will allow the elections scheduled for summer to go on. Despite her party leading in the polls, the fact a lot of wealth and skills have fled the country and the chance of being overrun by non-communist and loosing her two-third majority make the election and uncertain thing. A. Suhanthra would easily defeat any challenger, according to polls, but her party could lose 20 seats. This would rid them of their filibuster-proof super-majority, which they also need to act on constitutional reforms. Thus, we must wait and see what happens.

THE RETURN OF AZEEZ: HOW IT HAPPENED
June 4410

Wiqar Azeez began life 59 years ago as the son of an impoverished family with little hope in life. His family encouraged him to take up the family business, or perhaps settle into a lawyerly job or similar field of study, utilising his already obvious wits and intelligence in some scholarly pursuits.

Azeez excelled at school, graduating with the highest grades the school had seen in years. But he didn’t become a lawyer, or a historian, or a doctor — Azeez saw far more than this. Instead, he joined the army, served well, quickly became quite a distinguish soldier. He soon rose up the ranks as military reforms began to kick in from the government, for himself into a military academy incredibly quickly and soon found himself becoming the youngest general in the Medinese forces for 400 years aged just 26.

His peers shunned him, but again and again he proved himself worthy, eventually becoming the Commander of the Medinese forces just in time for the new, young, ambitious Sultan, the late Zaafir II, to begin constructing his plans for a new empire to arise in the Third World, the first of its kind in recent memory.

The rest, as they say, is history: Azeez became a de jure military legend, a celebrity figure, a noble, soon after a royal. But despite pulling off a handful of military miracles in the Medinese War, Azeez ultimately couldn’t hold back the forces he faced and was forced to retreat almost a decade ago to Istapali with the rest of the royals, where he made a new life as a military instructor and statesman, reinvigorating Istapali’s military and becoming nothing short of a hero in the region.

When Zaafir II died just a short while ago, however, it all changed; Zaafir’s son, Anura, took the throne in exile, but having little experience even his own family began to doubt that he could herald the return of the Medinese royals to this great nation. His uncles were hardly supportive, with Prince Raafith and his son taking no position and Kaleel ultimately coming to support Azeez despite initial concerns he may have been planning a run for the throne himself, apparently on account of some secret pact between himself and Azeez. His sister supported him, but her voice held little sway against the crowds of people supporting Azeez, who had always been expected to make a run for the throne. And thus, with no bloodshed, Azeez was able to take the throne and finally become Sultan Wiqar I, founding the Azeez line of Sultan’s with his royal wife Namira at his side and his son Prince Aaban III waiting in the wings.

Anura seemed hardly joyous about his abdication, but had little choice. Azeez is nothing short of a mythological figure, adapted by his people and loved by his army, feared by his enemies and respected by history. Istapali soon recognised him as the legitimate Sultan. Now, it appears, he’s charging forth with what few generals and troops stuck by his side, alongside a handful of Istapalian elite soldiers, towards his homeland.

Here, the President, the second in the new Republican government barely two years into her term, is quaking in her boots — she’s already unpopular, and it’s no secret that the public widely supports the return of the monarchy. Leaks showing how she planned to assassinate Azeez from afar revealed only last week have done nothing to help her image, either: can she really muster the support of the military against their own former Commander? Will a so-called ‘puppet government’ of Medina’s enemies be able to summon up the support of her people against their still adored hero? Will the Republic be able to survive the return of Azeez?

Or is Azeez about to bring about a new era, to resurrect Medina from the grace, and pull together its forces to decimate its enemies? Is this the dawn of a new age, of a new empire, even of a new war? Or is this all one big tragedy waiting to happen?

Azeez is expected to arrive within months, with his family following shortly after. We shall see how long the President can keep her head in these troubling times — not only figuratively.

Azeez Campaign Successful: How One Man Destroyed the Republic
July 4410

In the last days of June, Sultan Wiqar Azeez’s boats landed firmly on Medinese shores.

The media had stationed themselves not too far away, broadcasting pictures across the globe of the boats coming into dock, the elite soldiers marching out onto the land, first with heavy shields, then with sniper rifles, then with ceremonial swords — all facing off against a solid wall of 200 of the highest ranked Medinese Republican troops there are, headed up by the Commander himself, under the watchful eye of the President herself there in person. Hundreds of guns, a sea of faces, a handful of tanks, snipers perched on vantage points, all of them staring down at the troops, ready to shoot at the first sign of danger.

And yet they did not flinch. After the last tussle of a ceremonial Royal Guard’s overcoat slipped out, their hands planted firmly on their razor sharp sabres, there came he — the self-proclaimed Sultan, the myth, the legend — Azeez.

He stood, stone cold and with a sense of unstoppable sangfroid, his back as straight as ever. He was dressed in his utilitarian Commander’s outfit, no doubt a smart and calculated PR move. He surveyed what he faced. A voice came from a loud speaker, not far in front of him: it was the Commander: “Prince Wiqar, you are under arrest. Place your hands over your head now, slowly, or we will shoot.”

Nothing.

“Prince Wiqar—” it began again.

Then came his voice, booming louder now more than ever: “I am not Prince Wiqar.”

“I am Sultan Wiqar Azeez,” he proclaimed calmly. “And I order you to stand down.”

Nervous glances from the troops.

The loudspeaker, now the voice of the President: “We do not accept the orders of traitors.@

This enraged Azeez. He launched into a brilliant speech, a spectacle to behold that was so convincing, the enemy laid down its arms: here is just a sample of that momentous oration.

Traitor? Traitor? You call me a traitor? The President, who has sold out her nation to ‘republicanism,’ who maintains nothing but a puppet government for our enemies, who is content with listing this continent languish in military and economic shambles for eternity, who quivers at the arrival of just one man to the degree that she sends nigh on a whole division to stare him down, calls me a traitor?

This is what you have created. Countryman turned on countryman, Medinese ready to shoot their brothers and sisters dead in the name of republicanism or nationhood, chaos and unrest. This is yours. You are the traitor, not I. I have done nothing but serve my country. I brought about success after success, and even when we failed, I stuck by our Sultan, because I believe in Medina. I did not run off and support some, some — some fool in a suit proclaiming herself President because she made some fancy speeches.

What do you know of statesmanship? Of leadership?

Nothing. You and I both know that you’re nothing but a stand-in for the New Endralonian, Lourennais puppetmasters so happy to placate this great nation with your insufficiency. What we need isn’t strong leadership — true reforms — and a leader who believes in Medina, in Dovani, once more! Not a President who sits around and waits while Xsampa marches across the north, and Lourenne ships to our ports...

I look across into this sea of faces, and what do I see? Brothers — comrades. Friends. I see generals who fought side by side with me, I see recruits who know better than this..

The speech continued, uninterrupted by the stunned crowds, for several minutes, growing ever more rousing, powerful and, eventually, reaching a stunning crescendo: “Lay down your arms! I implore you. Do it for me. Do it for yourselves. Do it for Medina. Change is coming. No longer can we wait — no. Now is the time to act. Now is the time to reclaim our nation from these traitors. So I ask you — turn your weapons not towards me, but to the ground, and join me in this crusade. And all those watching across the nation, I implore you, join me. Please, brothers — don’t let this be the end for Medina. Lay down your weapons.”

A few seconds of silence passed, and then, one by one, the weapons started to fall, in a silent wave. Azeez had won.

Azeez had done it. The Commander turned his gun on the former President, and she was taken into custody. The military was Azeez’s. The Bloodless Coup had ended — and Azeez was free to reclaim his throne.

Tomorrow he is to be crowned Emperor, joined finally by his wife and son. Unlike the Sultans before him, Azeez is to be a powerful constitutional monarch, leading the nation at its highest levels, leading it through war, leading its government, yet embracing the representation granted by democracy on domestic issues.

With this revelation, he has struck a chord with voters in the polls: any doubt about Azeez’s popularity has faded. Azeez is the ruler Medina has always needed. Medina is back, and this time, it’s more prepared than ever before.

Long live Emperor Azeez!
