Emperor Azeez Launches Full-Scale Invasion of Tropica
February 4412

After building up state forces in Medina even more, after taking control in the infamous Bloodless Revolution just about 18 months ago, Azeez has elected to launch a fresh campaign on a Tropica. Unlike his predecessor, Zaafir, he is not interested in hiding his ambitions: “Tropica flourished under Medinese rule. Under the rule of democracy, it has once again crumbled. This nation deserves to be in Medinese hands, and soon after, we shall unite all of Dovani to our cause, through blood and the pen alike.” The invasion has already begun, though the meagre Tropican forces are unlikely to put up much of a fight and victory is almost certain — many locals even still support the monarchy (or at least are so pessimistic regarding the current state of affairs to support the invasion by default anyhow)!

But what is this cause he speaks of? Well, Azeez has been quietly debuting a new direction for Medina and the continent in terms of ideology of late, and this appears to be only the first step: Colonial Nationalism, as it has been called, is the belief held by Azeez and many of his followers that the first world has left the former colonies for centuries in a state of ruin, with even now many of them bowing to outside influence and rarely being able to compete. Azeez seems to believe that the only way to equalise the world order is to unite Dovani as one and take down anyone who opposes them — moreover, some experts and analysts have suggested that Azeez would likely go further, waging war on the West to ‘take back’ what the colonies have lost, though he is yet to openly admit such things.

To this end, he appears to be interested in reclaiming first and foremost Tropica and Utembo, the two nations formerly under the rule of the Medinese Empire: nations “rightly won and later stolen by the imperialists who fear any colonial development,” but also in uniting with other nations with similar goals. He has already met with Xsampa-Hansen and appears to be ready to sign an alliance with the empire, which would make the colonial alliance a massive power in the third world. There has even been talk of discussions with the new far-right government in Statrica, a nation which Zaafir had once intended to invade and which Azeez himself led a scorched earth campaign in just ten years ago.

As for where we go from there, who could know? With Statrica, Xsampa-Hanzen and Istapali all looking to be solid allies, and Tropica and Utembo likely to soon be sitting under the border of the new Medinese Empire, it’s not unlikely that Azeez will set about building an empire far larger than the one he helped to craft in the past 30 years or so.

This of course has come as quite a surprise: most had expected Azeez to take a similar path to Zaafir, denying imperial ambitions while discretely pursuing the unification of the colonies. But Azeez clearly sees no logic in this: why bother with the façade when it’s what we all expect anyway?

And if we’re honest with ourselves, this is why Medina loves him, is it not? Look at the polls: support for Azeez sits in the 80s, in some cases nearing 90%. And why? Because Azeez has taken Medina, a nation that has settled for a decade with pacifism and slow development, and given them hope, purpose, direction, and he’s done it all unashamedly. Azeez is the only person in recent memory to openly admit to imperial beliefs, something which rather seems to have faded out of fashion in much of the first world (with a few exceptions). He’s the only person alive today who can look out at Dovani, at Terra, and scream from the mountains: ‘One day, this will all be ours,’ and get away with it — no, more than get away with it: it’s precisely what drives his popularity at home and his mythic status abroad. His enemies already fear him, and the more he grows, the more invulnerable he becomes. Why should he hide his ambitions? If it comes to war, so be it: the people trust in Azeez, and Azeez trusts in the people of Medina: unshackled by the chains of Zaafir’s leadership, Azeez is nothing short of a god amongst men in the Eastern hemisphere.

One day, perhaps, Azeez shall topple Lourenne, crush New Endralon, decimate Talmoria. He shall tear apart his enemies and turn the colonies from forgotten nothings to fearsome global powers, sitting on an equal footing with Dorvik or Kazulia. Medina will become not a meagre former colony, but an immortal power ready to shape history with the colonies’ interests in mind. If he has to do this through bloodshed and conquest, it appears to be a reasonable price to pay in the eyes of the Medinese, and so long as he has the Medinese people behind him, Azeez is a figure Terra can no longer simply ignore.

Last Vestiges of Tropican Resistance Crushed as Alliance with Xsampa-Hanzen Solidifies; Royal Family Sidelined as Aaban Takes Centre Stage
November 4412

The final pockets of resistance within Tropica from vitriolic nationalists and the few remaining military troops stationed there have been put down, according to a new report from the Ministry of Defence: Tropica, in other words, is defeated.

Part of the reason the invasion was so short is that the locals, who had formerly lived under Medinese rule with King Kaleel, the Emperor’s brother-in-law, still much preferred the iron-fisted rule of Medina and found attempts by the war torn, disparate local groups to establish a similar order dissatisfying. Once again, attempts to establish democracy over unity with the new Medinese order led to collapse, and another New Endralonian puppet government (at least in the eyes of many Medinese citizens) fell. It is notable, indeed, that so many of Medina’s opponents have chosen to remain silent on the issue. This, of course, is exactly what Azeez wants: it was, you may recall, widely seen as his main goal in the infamous Capital Battle at the end of the Medinese War a decade ago.

Another contributing factor was the rapidly developing military, which continues to see major investment from Azeez.

It is important to distinguish, of course, the roles of the two branches of government here: Medina is not the Medinese Empire itself, a little understood facet of the new constitution. Rather it is a state within it. The military is entirely in the hands of Azeez however: no state is entitled to its own branch of the armed forces, though all contribute to it. For the moment, this matters little: the Imperial Cabinet selected by Azeez decides military matters as opposed to the Medinese cabinet elected by the people, true, but the forces themselves are only recruited from Medina, inspired by Medinese nationalistic fervour, and are de facto Medinese forces.

Yet when Tropica soon has its own National Assembly, it too shall begin to contribute to the Imperial Forces: not only does this solidify Azeez’s grip, with the tenets of his colonial nationalist ideology living on in the Empire even if Medina was to fall itself, it also means that the Empire will be able to draw a significant, unified army. Unlike Zaafir’s simple union of independent protectorates and pseudo-colonies, Tropica and all other future states to be enveloped by the revolution shall function as one nation, with one Imperial Forces, helping to build an even more deficient and deadly military for use by the the Empire and making it only more fearsome: rather than combatting an Imperial coalition reliant on the survival of a handful of nations, our foes shall be combatting a bigger, stronger, unified and organised military which could live on even if its principle members were defeated, a smart move from the Emperor which no doubt betrays his long-understood military wits (and perhaps indicated an attempt to prepare for a widely predicted coming war).

To add to this, the Empire and Xsampa-Hansen have recently announced that they shall be signing a formal alliance, creating a powerful and rapidly growing imperial bloc in Dovani that could one day threaten the most powerful nations in Terra if left uncontained (not to mention the support from Istapali): but with many still recovering from the shock of the narrow victory in the first war and facing an only more powerful foe, will Medina’s enemies be willing to strike out against the Empires early, or wait until it’s too late for them? Does it even matter?

With Azeez’s imperial grip on the world stage growing ever stronger, it’s easy to forget the foundation of his power at home in Medina: the royals. Yet, while most of the royal family appears to have stood aside for Azeez, they have no been sidelined through a simple legal loophole in the Constituion of late; they are not, in fact, of royal blood.

Now Azeez is the Emperor and the new constitution is in effect, a new definition of what counts for royalty has been embraced: under the new laws, Azeez’s line is a new bloodline. While Prince Aaban, heir to the throne and Azeez’s son, rapidly showing himself to be a competent general just like his father in the tussle in Tropica after years of training in Istapali, is of royal blood (as his father sits on the throne), and Azeez’s wife Empress Namira is of royal blood by definition, Namira’s blood relatives and Zaafir’s family are not — they’re mere in-laws. Their royal claims have been superseded, and as such, they have lost their official status according to Medinese law. While many in the family have protested the ruling of the Supreme Court in this matter, there is little doubt they will ultimately accept th writing and retire in peace considering their age and / or inexperience or power relative to Azeez (likely settling for Azeez’s large monetary sum to set them up for a wealthy retirement.)

Empress Namira has remained silent on the issue.

Medinese Empire to Officially Endorse T. Sagana’s Democratic Forces in Vanakalam
December 4415

As the nearby nation of Vanakalam collapses into civil war after polls indicated that a democratic election could swing in favour of the anti-Communist Democratic forces, leading to widespread attacks from the Communists in the past few months, Azeez has made the surprise decision to engage with democratic leader Sagana’s call for support from the international community and officially side with the democratic movement.

The move was seen as incredibly surprising to some international analysts, with a Azeez tending to prefer authoritarian regimes or semi-democratic nation’s (such as the system the Empire currently lives under) in order to maintain stability and order. He believes this is one of the only ways Dovani can have an advantage against the largely democratic Western enemies of Medina, be that in diplomacy or war.

Does the move then indicate that Sagana is not quite as democratic as she seems? Perhaps not, say some Medinese analysts.

“Frankly, Communists aren’t exactly known for being isolationists, nationalists or monarchists — and that combination isn’t good for Azeez,” says Dorvish journalist Adler Hesse. “You’ve got a provocative economic ideology, who we know historically these types of people tend to want to spread that message, in a poor continent where socialism could take hold, where Azeez believes this would destroy the economy, while they’re also unlikely to buy into the colonial nationalism idea that the Empire is flaunting and unlikely to accept Azeez as a monarch if invaded or an ally if not.

“What does he stand to lose? The worst that could happen is that the democratic forces turn away from the Empire, but when Azeez is the one helping to support them, that seems unlikely. Plus, it’s a good PR move. Plus, think about Azeez’s decision to befriend the explicitly anti-Communist Statrican government recently, this isn’t exactly out of character...

“What I’m saying, then, is that this is a perfectly sound strategical decision on Azeez’s part. I know some people are saying this is a mistake, but I’d ask those people to consider what we really have to lose here, and what we stand to gain — a powerful ally in the south, the end of a disruptive communist regime, the spread of colonial nationalism to a new nation. And if they should fail? Well, by that stage, Medina and the Empire could probably take the Communists anyway, right?

“So, sure, question it — but now isn’t the time to start ringing alarm bells, neither here nor in Vanakalam.”

Azeez has promised to provide arms, funds and strategic support for the moment, but it’s not unlikely that we could see him looking to deploy his revamped naval forces or even some of his massive numbers of ground troops if necessary. While some have warned a larger conflict could break out if the communists were supported by another powerful government, but for the moment this appears to be a solid attempt and bringing yet another nation into the imperial sphere of influence.

More as it happens.

Ex-Prince Raafith, Zaafir’s Brother, Dies In Peace of Natural Causes
October 4416

Aged 73, the former Prince and brother of the last Sultan Zaafir II, Raafith, has died in peace at his family home in Tropica of natural causes. He leaves behind a daughter, 38, currently working as a Medinese lawyer and with seemingly no royal ambitions. Indeed Raafith himself mostly retired from public life after the war and did not contest Azeez’s declaration of sovereignty upon Zaafir’s death. It seems he many have even supported it!

Sadly, his wife died some years ago of natural causes.

He is said to have remained close with his brother-in-law Azeez, 66, and sister Empress Namira, 68, and the pair have declared a a national day of mourning tomorrow and offered Raafith’s family a state funeral.

Some have noted that this could indicate the start of another round of deaths in the extended Azeez family, and possibly the end of any loyalist’s ambitions of opposing Azeez. That is, of course, assuming the next generation does not take up arms against the government. Azeez however has asked for the coverage to respect the family’s privacy and avoid politics.

Invasion of Temania Begins
November 4416

Temania, once an ally of Zaafir’s Medina, has become the next state to fall to Azeez’s vast sword: the Medinese military is due to land in the nation within the week and launch a surprise assault. The justification? They’re untrustworthy: last time they signed an alliance with the Empire, they never ended up coming to our aid: how could we trust them now?

In Azeez’s quest to placate and unify Dovani under one alliance of colonial nationalists and stand up to the foreign powers in the West, it seems there is no room for distrust.

Azeez has put Prince Aaban III, his son, in command here — he has more than proven himself in recent years as a competent and skilled general, say his superiors, and this promotion has been based purely on meritocratic grounds. Aaban is not yet 40.

The question of course is whether the Empire can afford to split its troops between an invasion in Temania and the continuing war in Utembo, which appears to be resisting more skilfully than anticipated (though are still almost certain to fail in this endeavour, say commentators). With the National sporting such a large amount of troops, however, it doesn’t seem particularly unlikely that, in fact, Medina could straddle these two tasks and complete both successfully.

We’ll detail more from the front lines in the coming months.

Imperial Economy Booming Say Analysts: Extra Government Income Spent on New Military Technologies
January 4417

Since the inclusion of Tropica into the empire, improved state investment in infrastructure from the new President of the Assembly in Tropica and a round of fresh economic treaties with the likes of Statrica, Xsampa-Hansen and Istapali, the Medinese economy has seen a sharp turn upwards and the Imperial economy is booming, according to analysts.

The government has seen a similar increase in income from reformed taxes and budgets, with much of the additional income apparently going towards development for the military of improved technologies and tools, which combined with the huge number of troops and allies should help to make the Empire even more of a major military force in the third world and beyond, while giving the nations more economic and thus diplomatic power on the world stage.

Utemban War and Temanian War Concludes as Tensions Ramp Up Internationally: New Allies Make for Increased Stakes
December 4417

Highlights:

- Empire annexed approximately half of Utembo’s territory, split with Xsampa, but has suffered some internal resistance; this is expected to fade quickly
- Temania finally placated as the Temanian State Assembly is established and they become a full member of the Empire: fresh air resources gained from invasion
- Azeez indicates he is willing to speak to Dorvish officials, where a conflict of interest may be developing over Vanakalam and quarrels with the international community; date to be agreed for Dorvish visit to Medina
- Colonial nationalism spreads across Dovani: Ntoto signs treaties allying with Medina as Azeez contemplates more formal union of colonial nationalist states
- Opponents of colonial nationalism increasingly condemn imperial movements: war on the horizon?

It certainly has been a shocking few months for the Empire recently. The situation is rapidly developing, with some commentators now proposing that a long-prophecised war with the west now looking to be on the horizon if all sides aren’t more careful. As to who would come out on top, nobody seems to know.

Let’s recap.

Not too long ago, the joint invasion of Utembo by the Medinese Empire and the Xsampa-Hanzen Empire ended with the surrender of Utemban forces, with approximately half of the land falling to Medina. Here, a significant amount of resistance from the public was encountered, but a combination of colonial nationalist propaganda, economic boons, the forthcoming restoration of democracy, and moderate but firm anti-riot tactics (at least by imperial standards) have rapidly began to calm things down in the region, with many of the most influential instigators being arrested for threatening the peace of the union. While it appears Utembo shall for a long time never be behind the Empire one-hundred-percent, things should return again to being relatively peaceful in the region soon.

Meanwhile, the war with Temania has also met its natural conclusion, with the state now opening its State Assembly within the Empire, indicating that much of the resistance in the region is dying down with many subscribing to colonial nationalism anyhow and unwilling to resist the major military now possessed by the Empire. To add to the sweetness of this already mammoth achievement (the territory is one of the largest ever conquered by a colonial empire in recent years), the nation’s reasonable Air Force has been mostly captured by the Empire, helping to ameliorate the rather dire situation regarding this particular branch of the military, with the Air Forces always being one of Medina’s weak points. While it certainly isn’t on par with the army, or even the small but reasonable navy, it goes at least some of the way to helping turn Medina into a powerful military force.

As if this wasn’t enough, a new government in Ntoto running on a colonial nationalist platform — one of a number of copycat parties across Dovani’s third-world — has become one of the first foreign colonial nationalist government to declare their support for the Ekpire and sign an alliance with our nation. Even should their government cuange, of course, it is likely they shall not oppose such a power in the region anyhow, so this can be nothing but a benefit.

Inspired by the swathe of fresh allies joining the fray, Azeez is reportedly considering forming a formal union, similar to that of the long forgotten and under-utilised League of Independent Naions, a loose union of former colonies, but expressly for allies of colonial nationalism. That certainly is a development to watch, though nothing is official as of yet...

Still, it’s not all rosy. The opposing first-world forces and major powers, primarily Kazulia, New Endralon and Lourenne, all apepear to be showing growing concern at the growth of the imperial caliphate in Dovani, with explicit warnings even being delivered by some leaders in recent months.

Could this be the dawn of war in Dovani? A furious battle between the West and the vast colonial nationalist and imperial alliance? Or merely the predecessor to a war of words, a diplomatic tussle that shall result in no blood spilt?

Not if Dorvik has their way. While they have condemned the actions of the imperial movement here in Dovani, their shared interest and support for the democratic forces under T. Sagana in Vanakalam means that they’re not looking for war with the Empires, despite their role II the rincreasingly hostile Northern Council. As such it appears Azeez and several high ranking government officials in Dorvik are preparing to meet, with a date currently being negotiated for a trip to Medina by the Prime Minister and Defence Minister of Dorvik!

But will their tries for a ‘peaceful resolution’ to the increasingly likely conflict succeed, or will they fall on deaf ears? Can Azeez convince them to stay out of it, or will they be forced to choose between Vanakalam and the NC?

Altogether it’s clear that events are moving much quicker now, and nobody is really sure what is happening next. As the drama unfolds, however, one thing is becoming clear: what happens next will cuange the face of Terra forever.

Dovani Union Established as Prince Aaban, Heir to the Throne, Announces Birth of Twin Girls
September 4418

Highlights:

- Colonial Nationalism formalised through Dovani Union, economic and military union of the imperial-allied colonies
- Heir to the throne Prince Aaban celebrates birth of non-identical twin girls, securing Azeez bloodline

With the Medinese sphere of influence growing ever larger, so too are the calls for a true union of the allied former colonies, quickly becoming known as the colonial coalition.

The colonial coalition has insofar been united by a vast array of unique and individual alliances and agreements which have been slow to develop, but over the past 18 months it is understood that a new agreement has been drafted: the Dovani Union.

The Dovani Union is seemingly intended to replace the League of Independent Nations, the prior agreement uniting the former colonies which has mostly been perceived as a failure and unused in most diplomatic cases for centuries, forcing all members to withdraw from the League before joining the DU. It is also, in Azeez’s words, “a formal, practical incarnation of colonial nationalism, uniting the colonies economically and militarily as one, ready to stand against Western pressures until the end of time, outlasting even the founding members... The DU is an idea, and no war can destroy it. This is the first victory of colonial nationalism.”

What Azeez appears to have been referring to here is the Three Victories outlined in his bestselling book, Colonial Nationalism and How To Make It A Reality. He describes the First Victory as a formal unification of the former colonies under the ideological banner of colonial nationalism. The Second Victory is the defence of the colonies against Western attackers, proving colonial worth and power under unity. The Third Victory is acceptance, with the West forced to deal with the colonies as equals. The implication, of course, is that war is just around the corner — something everyone seems to have felt for years but now seems dauntingly close (although Azeez maintains he meant this as a metaphor, not a prophecy).

So what is the DU, and who is a part of it?

The founding members are the Xsampa-Hanzen Empire, the Medinese Empire, Istapali, Ntoto, and Statrica, with Kimlien, Utembo, Tropica and Temania existing as parts of the two Empires and thus not having representation as individual member states. This represents a large portion of the third world, albeit some commentators have argued that rising colonial nationalist movements in other countries could trigger a rise in numbers in coming years.

The DU mandates that all members open up free and fair trade channels with each other, though allows each state to trade with other nations in any way they like. If there is unanimous agreement, the members can also enter into trade deals as a whole union with special terms and arrangements, but this is expected to be rare. Some basic customs agreements are also to be implemented to make this as smooth as possible, which is expected to boost economic growth significantly within the union.

It also acts as a military alliance between all member nations, but forbids them from making any military alliances with non-DU nation’s themselves (tjough again this can be arranged by a unanimous agreement from the union as a whole). If any one nation is attacked, the whole union is called to defend them, effectively creating one military force. There are also the tools in place for the union to essentially pool their resources with ease and form one united military force with control given to a nominated commander, which will no doubt prove useful in securing efficieny and unity in a war scenario.

It also outlines some powers for the union to agree as a whole to create union wide rulings on certain issues, for example to mandate that the members aren’t acting unfairly to one another. In general, however, the goal is to unite the colonies under one banner, make miltary and economic elements more efficient, and to provide protection for all member states against the rest of the world, while not restricting the internal politics of each member state.

All member states also has one vote on any issue regardless of size, which is decided by the government of each country and not by independently elected members. The location they meet also changes each time, moving in alphabetical order (although safety concerns are also obviously taken into account.)

As Azeez has said, this is possibly his greatest achievement yet, and the first step towards securing the foundations of colonial nationalism he has spent so long laying down. Still, it is unlikely the West will back down, and war is still very much on the cards.

In happier news, Azeez’s son and heir to the throne, General Prince Aaban Azeez’s wife has just given birth to two non-identical twin girls, it was recently announced! The birth has secured Azeez’s bloodline and no doubt brought a great deal of happiness to the family. It also seemingly ensures that, yes, one day the Empire could be ruled by an Empress — an interesting situation for a sill fairly conservative nation.

Congratulations to the blossoming family!

Empress Namira Dies Aged 70, National Week of Mourning Declared
December 4418

Tragically, just months after the birth of her two new grandchildren, Namira, one of the last of final Sultan Zaafir II’s siblings and Emperor Azeez’s loving wife, Empress Namira, has died of surgical complications relating to a difficult and undisclosed long-term illness aged 70. It is said she died peacefully in her sleep with Azeez by her side and her son and grandchildren with her.

The Azeez family has understandably withdrawn from public life for the time being, and Azeez couldn’t even take to the balcony of the Imperial Palace to announce the National week of mourning dedicated to Namira’s passing, instead trusting the chief of communications to make the announcement. The funeral in 7 days time is expected to be a grand, solemn affair with the whole empire invited to mourn with the Azeez family. Thousands are expected to watch the casket drive in through the streets, and flowers have already began to pile sky high outside the Imperial Palace.

Namira, in her youth a prominent socialite, in her adult years the loving and supportive wife of Emperor Azeez, has always commanded the respect and adoration of even the most cynical Medinese citizen. Authoritative, assertive, and yet never abrasive, Namira has always made an impression in her television appearances and shall be sadly missed.

She is the last of Zaafir’s siblings to pass away, with Raafith and Kaleel passing a few years ago. Zaafir’s children, her nephew and niece, have been estranged from her ever since Azeez took the throne, but have still made public statements mourning her passing.

Rest in peace, Namira, Empress and wife, mother and leader. May you pass easily to the other side.

Sagana Meets Aaban, Announces DU Membership
April 4435

Image
Above: President Sagana

The President of the Confederated League of Vasakana, T. Sagana, and the Emperor of the Medinese Empire, Aaban I, have met in the Medinese capital. The two key eastern leaders, whose nations are separated only by a small channel, have been distant allies since the succession of Aaban unto the Medinese throne. His father, Emperor Azeez I of Medina, was an early international ally of Sagana back when she was engaged in a bitter civil war against her communist government - who she overthrew. These long and strong links between the imperial House of Medina and the Vasakanese unitarian regime have led to the two national leaders meeting 'on very good terms' according to insiders. The two heads of states discussed the state of affairs in Dovani, philosophy, politics and the situations in particular of their two respective nations - both of which are engaged in wars over claimed territory.

Both can share a common ambition for larger unions, and while Medina struggles with its imperialism and Vanakalam with its continental unionism, there is a major agreement which has came out of their private summit. The proclaimed Confederated League of Vasakana has announced that it will officially join the Dovani Union after the end of the war in Kalkalistan, which has been increasingly going the way of Sagana. The 69-year-old Sagana will be 70 in a few days and there are growing concerns about the possibility that she should die before the war is over, throwing the plan into turmoil. However, to solve this looming issue, Sagana has put forward legislation in the Vanakalamese parliament to ensure that the agreement is enshrined in law. Sagana is three years away from fighting for another six-year term - her third - which she looks set to win, so there are no concerns about this legislation not passing.

With the agreement on DU joining likely, the DU is set to rapidly and massively increase in size, and more than double in terms of available overall manpower. Kalkalistan's violent centre is being closed in day-by-day by Vanakalamese and rebel forces, leaving the capital region under Emperor Raghu and the central region under Empress Lakshmi isolated in a sea of rebellion and popular movement against the loyalists and their monarchy. The violence may give way to a truly strong union across the continent, which would become a key ally of the Medinese and could one day even join in the continental war. A massive, veteran army provided by the Vasakani League would be a major development in the Dovani war, and could cause issues for nearby nations that have fought against the imperialist Medinese. With a summit, alliance and major agreement behind the two leaders, an alliance is on the verge of being borne that could massively alter the future history of Dovani.
