OOC: The veto power

Postby jamescfm » Sat Jul 04, 2020 9:48 pm

The "veto power" held by permanent members of the Security Council has been a topic of discussion for some time. As it currently operates, the opposition (i.e. "no" vote) of a permanent member automatically means that a Security Council Resolution does not pass and this has been the case for some time. The purpose of this thread is to hear player feedback on the matter. Three key questions:

  • Should the veto power exist?
  • If yes, should their be limits or restrictions on that power?
  • If yes again, what should they be?
Please share any and all thoughts on the matter.

-Yes.
-Yes
-Perhaps a rule on how many vetoes per session are allowed per member or as a whole.
I also wonder if an "override" rule should be proposed, where the other nations could override the veto. That is, only if the current veto power is kept the same.

Yes.

I have not formed an opinion on the other two, but leaning towards "no" - for selfish reasons.

A system where a unanimous vote by non permanent members FOR a resolution can override any Veto (idea by Pragma)

First of all, thank you, James, for opening a discussion on this.

In my view the veto should be eliminated. I would support replacing it with a requirement that SC resolutions should be supported by a super-majority of nations that vote, perhaps three-fifths or two-thirds.

Yes,

Yes,

Since the Security Council of the UN Irl has this power I believe the SC IG should as well. Having a limit or something along those lines would be good

Why do we have permanent members these days, I wasn't here for that decision, so genuinely curious.

I support the veto (adds the likelihood of RP), but don't support the rankings and therefore don't support the permanent member concept. Have we considered a non-elected rotating set of seats (or just singular seat?) with veto power?

If we aren't open to that idea, I vote we do away with the veto.
Just a bunch of shit.

Kind of think only reason there was a veto was because UN model had one and influenced formation. Memory is that was sort of way to get USSR and US to reach agreement on viable big organization.

I was not here but have read that there were some most powerful nations that seemed like naturals for that role. The replacing of some of the permanent members with others undermines the whole concept.

My opinion is also self centered not pan-terran and is opposition to veto by any nation. Opinion also is no opposition to permanent members per se but since "permanent" is not permanent might want to look at how become a de facto member particularly since the new permanent members are not planning to give up their veto.

The compromises on limitations on the veto being absolute that have been suggested sound like ways forward.

I see no reason the veto shouldn't exist and has been used at very interesting points, in my opinion, throughout SC history. I see no reason to remove it.
