SC R67: Limitation of the veto power

Postby Auditorii » Sun Aug 05, 2018 4:20 pm

"Dorvik also proposes Resolution 67 to the Security Council:"

Resolution 67
A resolution to prevent countries who are Permanent Members of the Security Council of exclusive self-interest.

Understanding that Permanent Members of the Security Council possess a vital role in international politics, economics and order;

Recognizing that Permanent Members and all members of the World Congress have individual agendas, concepts and ideologies;

Declare that the Permanent Members of the Security Council not use veto's for personal interest and;

Prohibits that Permanent Members of the Security Council use veto's in relation to votes that directly impact their country and;

Agree to work together with other Permanent Members of the Security Council to promote a more harmonious world order.

OOC: Essentially this bill prevents countries from vetoing something proposed against them directly. It allows for a more real world application of the UN Security Council's veto. I believe this was previously discussed on Discord among several people and we can continue to have the discussion; either IC or OOC."

"We appreciate the support of the representatives from Cobura, do they offer any additional comments? I believe it goes without saying, but for record-keeping purposes the Dorvish Republic votes AYE on the proposed Resolution 67."

Dnmai Btházrdrsme Kárak, Vanukean Ambassador to World Congress:

Our government believes the parameters for prohibition of the veto are far too broad. As a responsible security council member we cannot allow this to pass in this form.

Therefore, Vanuku votes NAY and will VETO this resolution.

We instead call for further debate and an amended resolution based on more specific examples when a Permanent Security Member may not use its veto. We always believe it is wise to debate a resolution rather than put it straight to vote.

OOC: That’s essentially what I had suggested but instead it Cobura started voting. How about withdraw your veto and start the discussion in place of outright vetoing the bill.

Giannino De Felice, Istalian Minister of Foreign Affairs:

Since a new World Congress ambassador has not been determined yet, I will be speaking pn behalf of the current Istalian government. Hence I say, that as a self respecting nation, we cannot allow the reduction of the veto to some formality. The world congress was established with the almost omnipotent veto in mind which would act as a check and balance to ensure global stability and peace. Of course in terms of „morality“ we should not use veto for personal interest, and Istalia has been doing so to the extent of its abilities. Nonetheless, we are all here for the exact purpose of representing our nations‘ interests, making the intent of this resolution incompatible with the intent of the World Congress as an organization. To conclude, we currently will vote against any reduction of the veto power and furthermore, we will especially counteract the clause claiming that veto may not be used to prevent sanctions against their own nation.
