Results of the First Terran Mathematics Olympiad!Hosted in Astoria K'alak'i, HobraziaDecember 4909A total of 14 participants from 7 nations traveled to Astoria K'alak'i to participate in the first ever Terran Mathematics Olympiad. Participants came from a variety of backgrounds, including independent scholars, professors at prestigious universities, and government economists. Malivia's Lalitmohan Savalia, an economist at the Malivian Ministry of Food & Agriculture, received special permission from the Hobrazian government to attend the event and enter Hobrazia despite a diplomatic shutdown between the two countries. Some participants, such as Selucian professor and former child prodigy Alcesimarchus Catullus, were met with significant fanfare from observers at the event.
Participants were given 5 hours to solve a series of 10 problems, each one progressively harder in difficulty. A solution to a problem will be awarded 10 points, and meaningful progress toward a solution awarded 1 point. The problems were created by a team of mathematicians at the University of Muzal K'alak'i, who will also judge participants' solutions.
OOC: I generated scores by generating a random chance of success for each problem, applying a difficulty penalty that grew in 5% increments. For instance, the first problem's attempt would be unaltered, the first problem's chance of success would be reduced by 5%, the second number's chance of success reduced by 10%, and so on. An attempt scoring below 10% resulted in 0 points, an attempt scoring between 10% and 60% resulted in 1 point, and an attempt scoring above 60%. Each participant had a 40% chance of fully solving the first problem and only a ~10% chance of fully solving the 10th problem.Individual ResultsThe Integral Cup has been won by
Cicereia Servatius Aeacus of Selucia! Aecaus will also eceive an award of $10,000 and a fully-paid month-long vacation in Hobrazia.
The second place winner,
Nart Muragaevy of Hobrazia, will receive a $5,000 award, and the third place winner,
Alcesimarchus Catuluss of Selucia, will receive a $1,000 award.
Congratulations to all of the participants - this was a challenging set of problems, and every participant ought to be proud of their performance.
National ResultsAn extremely strong showing from Selucia! With an average score of 36.0, Selucia's mathematicians were far and above the strongest in the competition. Their performance at the first Terran Mathematics Olympiad is a badge of honor for their nation's educational and mathematical prowess.
The next Terran Mathematics Olympiad will be held in December 4914. To register your nation's participants, please contact the Hobrazian Ministry of Culture.
