Jakania launches formal election campaign with Tropica visist
World Congress representative al-Darwish marks beginning of the Security Council campaign with symbolic visit to the so-called Third World

In the wake of Security Council elections earlier this year, politicians and diplomats from Jakania have come together to support a formal campaign to elect the country to Seat B on the World Congress' governing authority. Following on from an unsuccessful push towards the end of the last session, the Jakanian government and opposition are keen to build on their limited success. The new campaign will be known as "Vote Jakania: Unity and Friendship" and will direct efforts already begun prior to the last election by Jakania's World Congress delegation.

Wardiyya al-Darwish, the country's permanent representative, has become the unofficial face of the campaign and embarked on a trip to Tropica in order to promote the Jakanian effort. For several years now, al-Darwish has been an active participant on behalf of Jakania in the World Congress General Assembly. Alongside other diplomats in the Jakanian Department of World Congress Affairs as well as domestic politicians, al-Darwish has been publicly frustrated by the unresponsive nature of Selucia, Majatra's current representative on the Security Council.

Upon her arrival in Tropica, al-Darwish met with representatives from the government of Makuku Manuera, including the Foreign Minister and her own counterpart Elsa Prince. The delegations are reported to have discussed a variety of issues of international concern, particularly with respect to the World Congress. Tropica and Jakania have become unlikely partners in the General Assembly owing to their shared support for an international organisation to support an end to food insecurity and malnutrition.

Throughout the remainder of the three days that the Permanent Representative spent in the country, she visited a diverse array of agricultural groups, charitable organisations and even religious institutions. Tropica has seen significant economic change in the past five years since Manuera became Prime Minister, with many industrial sectors switching to co-operative methods of production in contrast to the private corporation models that dominate many countries in the developed world.

In a speech at the headquarters of the Union of Agricultural Workers, al-Darwish told the assembled crowd, "Jakania's campaign is about asserting two key values: unity and friendship. Governments and nations across the globe are striving for the same objectives, of international peace and security, which is what we mean by unity. When we refer to friendship, we mean a mutual respect for our differences and a commitment to cooperation on shared values".

Caner urges countries to seek new era for Majatra
President's speech marks first major statement of foreign policy agenda since her election victory earlier in the year

President Meltem Caner has delivered a major foreign policy address at the Temiz Ozkan University in Dokuz, this afternoon. In the speech she called on domestic politicians and international allies alike to seek a "new era" for relations between the countries of Majatra, where stability and cooperation might dominate the continent's history of division and conflict. Caner's speech was her most high-profile appearance since she was victorious over incumbent Ayleen Basri's Birlik Movement in March's presidential election.

Highlighting regional developments such as a return to stability in Vanuku, the President suggested that the continent had a unique opportunity to redefine itself as a centre of stability and cooperation. Caner focused on the role of inter-faith dialogue as crucial to ensuring that countries do not allow their historic rivalries to undermine regional cooperation in the present, saying "the nature of our continent is such that it contains peoples of many different faiths but unless we come together in a spirit of mutual respect, we risk allowing religious differences to prevent progress into a shared future".

Later in her speech, Caner criticised the regime in Barmenistan for its decision to exclude Ahmadis from positions of authority and called specifically on other Ahmadi countries across the globe to put pressure on the Barmenistani government to reverse their anti-Ahmadi policies. In spite of frequent reference to her party as secular, however, Caner spoke of her support for a system of Ahmadi democracy. Expanding on the term, she said "affirming our shared faith as a nation does not mean that we denigrate those who do not believe".

In recent years, the issue of religion's role in politics has become central to successive Jakanian election campaigns. Since their formation, the Democratic Alliance has been somewhat divided on the issue with left-wing figures in the party urging the leadership to commit to the Ozkanist secularist ideal. Nonetheless the party has always affirmed its commitment to Ahmadi values in election materials and public speeches.

Prior to this appearance, the new President had been keeping a relatively low public profile since her election. Despite a fierce election campaign before March, the political situation in Jakania has been notably calmer since the results provided a clear majority for the left-wing bloc of Umut and the Democratic Alliance. At the beginning of the month, a formal coalition agreement was approved by the Assembly and Alliance leader Zehra Apak replaced Baran Batuk as Premier. Unlike her predecessor it seems that Caner is content to fulfil the symbolic role of the presidency, rather than becoming too entrenched in partisan politics.

Jakania announces endorsement of Vanuku for Security Council
Only a few months into the latest session of the international body, the Jakanian government makes clear its intention for the next election

Akozan Turkyilmaz, the Jakanian Foreign Minister, has announced at a public press conference this afternoon that the government will not be seeking re-election to the World Congress Security Council. The surprise announcement comes less than six months after the country was re-elected to a second term on the international body with a record-equalling tally of votes from country's across the globe. In his press conference, Turkyilmaz told the assembled press that the decision was taken "in recognition of the principles of diversity and international cooperation".

Since the country was first elected to the Security Council at the beginning of the 44th Session, Jakania has been a consistent advocate for the principle of state sovereignty against imperialism and interventionist action by other countries. Despite receiving strong resistance from the established orthodoxy of the international community, this message has been well-received by the majority of the world's nations and Jakania was re-elected with more votes than every other country in the seat combined.

In addition to the decision not to stand, the Foreign Minister announced that Jakania would be switching their vote to Vanuku and fully endorsing the Jelbic nation for the election. The two countries share a cultural and historical affinity and have developed a strong trade link in recent decades. On top of these connections, Vanuku shares the Jakanian commitment to national sovereignty and has consistently shown itself to be an enemy of imperialist dogma.

Later in his conference, Turkyilmaz expanded on the reasoning behind the decision not to stand in the next election by emphasising the country's commitment to diversity and openness in international affairs, "Jakania does not believe in hegemony, spheres of influence or the existence of 'great powers', we are committed to an open international process that includes all countries".
