I am interested to see what people think. I've been thinking extensively about how to handle numbers of equipment and troop numbers, what we have with the Rildanor Accords is problematic, we see pretty much every nation has the same number of troops. That's a problem, clearly not every nation invests itself in its defense, there are nations in this game that have never been involved in military RP and wish not to be. The primary goal of OTAF is to make military RP realistic for both the advanced, hardcore military RPers and easy enough for the casual player to thumb through and to be able to grasp a basic concept of military RP within particracy.
What I've been thinking is that maybe I have been placing too much emphasis on the military economics rather than sitting down and thinking about the problem. I think we can eliminate the Rildanor Accords entirely, I think they serve a purpose and can be replaced by a much more casual agreement. Pale and I had a point of contention over this, many times for that matter, because why should Kafuristan be able to muster the same amount of troops as Zardugal when the lure of being a soldier in Kafuristan is much more alluring due to a poorer economic climate and less opportunity. What about advanced militarist societies that drive people to the military such as Dorvik? or what about states that are all about peace and non-intervention such as Lodamun? Why should they and realistically, why would they field militaries that are 500-600k strong? It doesn't make sense.
More or less what I am getting at is I think we can have a common agreement and players can set their own troop numbers depending on what they believe to be fair for their nation and OTAF Inspectors can check these numbers against RP, defense budget spending and overall realistic measures of the nation. For instance, if Keymon came out and said they had 1,000,000 troops when they have a population of 2m it'd be considered unrealistic for a number of factors, including 50% militarization unless under some crazy dictatorship who forces the people to be in the military, is just unrealistic and when they have a defense budget of like 3m Keymon (insert currency name here) the soldiers realistically probably wouldn't follow.
Granted, this might take a little bit to get use to but I think this could really work with proper governance and players buying into it. It would also allow us to have some variance in our military. Al'Badara is notably smaller a nation then Vanuku and would have a lot less troops based on the size of the nation that have to defend and what their interests are. It would also play a role in a "military buildup" where nations could take notice.
