Nuclear powers

Postby Hrafn » Thu Aug 30, 2012 9:38 pm

Sorry if this has already been discussed.

Is there any sort of consensus on which nations possess nuclear warheads, or are in the process of developing them? I have RP:d Kalopia as being a nuclear power in the past, and I would guess that nations like Zardugal, Luthori and Hulstria would have them.

The reason why I'm wondering is that the vast majority of particracy nations "[reserve] the right to develop, construct and store nuclear arms."
In the real world, only a small number of nations have nukes, and getting some of your own isn't exactly easy.

This can be extended to other kinds of WMD:s as well, of course.

I would assume that the nations considered "developed" and a few "developing" nations would be in possession or in the process of obtaining nuclear weapons.

I would also venture to say that nations generally RP'd as being 3rd world, 'weak' in regards to military power and/or who take a neutral position on the issue of war (think Switzerland) would not have or be in the process of obtaining nuclear weapons.

Just my opinion.

I would think that most Particracy nations could reasonably have some form of nuclear weaponry.

Tukarali is in the process of developing nukes. We'll end up having just a handful of crappy, no-frills, 20-200kt bombs, probably. No 100Gt super-mega-uber-hydrogen bombs.

In real world all countries are not the same size, so the big boys can bully others not to have them. The reason why there are no more nuclear weapons in our world is not technological but political, pretty much every western nation has the capability to produce nuclear weapons for example. Such political power does not exist in Terra, so pretty much anyone can have nukes.

Exactly. There's too much balance of power.
In the real world, you don't find every nation with the same population and size.

I brought up the topic of food... I doubt enough food is produced in Terra because almost everyone RPs first world nations with economies based on things apart from resource gathering.

I have realised, however, that not every nation has the same amount of money. The highest salary in Gaduridos is about 16,575 LOD. The highest salary in Beluzia is less than 14,000 LOD.
That may not look like a big difference because the LOD is a strong currency, but let's measure it in Gaduri currency:
Highest salary in Beluzia: less than 613,000 GAD
Highest salary in Gaduridos: around 750,000 GAD

For major concepts which would have an international effect, we need to set prices and stuff like that.
We should have an idea of how much nuclear weapons should cost.

We RP very unrealistically. Anyone can do almost anything. The nations are already too balanced, so it's only through RP that we can really add some inequality.
Colonies should also count for something for nations that have them (added population, therefore added taxes).

I'm not sure what you're onto here. Food production in first world nations has not gone down as other sectors has grown, rather it has gone UP, as the productivity of each farm worker has increased.

In RL, first world countries do produce food, yes...
But a lot of food is imported from India and some 3rd world countries.

I'm not saying food production goes down just because other sectors grow. Instead, I'm saying there is less focus on food in nations that have factories taking up space, and factory workers taking up employment. Even the first-world countries in Terra, I see mostly talks of mining, weapon production, or oil.

Maybe it's because I'm Jamaican why my perspective is different. Since education is more easily accessed now, and since the media convinces the masses that we're being modernised... We stopped focusing on food.
I asked a lady why isn't agriculture taught in urban schools, and she said people want their children to grow up to be doctors and lawyers, not farmers. Less than 5% of my generation is interested in agriculture. Most people, who are interested in it, only do those courses to become veterinarians, not farmers. The generation before mine showed more interest, and I believe we were really just a giant farm at a point.

In Terra, I just think every nation should at least publish its food production and consumption totals (just a nice estimate for RP sake) and see what it turns out to be. Play Tropico and fill your island with factories and housing then see if you have enough space for more farms after the people complain about food shortages.
