Unofficial IRC Channels - Listing and Guidance

Postby IdioC » Sat Aug 24, 2013 12:45 pm

In light of the recent issues with IRC Channels, I am compiling a listing of Unofficial IRC Channels.

IRC (Internet Relay Chat) allows players to communicate in real-time for free. Ideally, it should allow players to discuss matters more freely, but it can be risky. Please bear in mind the following guidance:

1)Moderation cannot police the channel.
*What is said in the channel cannot be acted upon in the forum as we cannot verify the logs.
*Game misconduct can be exposed by other means and is routinely checked for, so any allegations alluded to are already being explored.
*The channels are owned and operated by players, who have control over their own channel (see an "@" (op), "%" (half-op), "~" (owner, on some servers) to see who has the power to kick misbehavers). Particracy does not have any jurisdiction on these IRC channels.

2)Be sensible.
*Do not reveal personal details.
It's not necessary, everyone else is anonymous and simply exposes you to being looked up on the internet, possibly for malevolent purposes.
*If you elect to reveal personal details, YOU DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Moderation cannot verify what happens in the channel if details are revealed.
*Don't "Dox"(Reveal other's details).
It is never appropriate. If you need to track someone down for an serious infringement of personal safety, that's an IRC server operator matter and possibly a police matter.

3)IRC Servers have codes of conduct which must be obeyed.
*Esper.net has a charter. Read it, stick by it, know what you're getting into.
*If channels are on other servers, look them up and treat them with the same respect.

4)Use NickServ to protect your username and ChanServ to protect any channels you elect to make
*"/msg NickServ HELP" to receive commands to prevent others assuming your identity and misrepresenting you.
*"/msg ChanServ HELP" to receive commands to prevent others stealing your channel and deposing you.

5)Good luck.
IRC is a good facility when used appropriately. However, fall foul of the server rules, reveal your personal details to the wrong person or fail to protect your username and channel and it can quickly become a one-way ticket to a world of pain that Moderation will not be able to help you with.

If you accept the risks above:

Zanz's original post regarding IRC offers quick ways to try it if you wish to:
Zanz wrote:It's fairly simple to use. Just go to http://esper.net and click "Chat Now" on the top right. Alternatively, you should be able to link directly to the room you're interested by clicking below. Choose your nickname and join any of the channels listed below to chat about Particracy!

If the above method does not work, you may try accessing via Mibbit's chat client. To use Mibbit, go to http://mibbit.com and scroll to the bottom. Click "Chat Now" and where it asks for a name and channel name first click "Server" above and enter irc.esper.net, then your desired username and [the channel name you with to join].

If you wish to configure your own client, the server is at:
Code: Select all
server: irc.esper.net
Port (may not be needed): 6667

---
Known Channels:
On esper.net

#particracy - Unofficial channel for general discussion (Run by Zanz and Farsun).
#particracychat - Unofficial channel for general discussion (Run by soysauce).
#particracytalk - Unofficial channel for general discussion (Run by Dynastia).

#Lodamun - Unofficial channel, possibly for Lodamun-related game discussion, possibly general (Run by Jessaveriya).

---
This listing is created as an attempt to help guide where Moderation cannot rule.

Post new channels below to be added to the listing. Moderation reserve the right to de-list channels that cause severe issues, at their own discretion.

Where is everybody, anyway? The IRC's been dead for quite a while.

I stopped using it for precisely that reason.

Well, now that it's break for a bit, and with a longer break coming up, I demand that you all return and entertain me as you did in days of old.

EDIT: Polites, you Gypsy pile of poop, you stole my channel!
Just a bunch of shit.

On and off. You could go on and there are 6, 7 people online, or it's completely silent. Odd to say the least.

Here, what's happened to the IRC?

Whole thing seems to have vanished.

Yeah I actually popped in yesterday as I'm on break, but the channel's been empty too long and it's gone and de-registered.

I blame Polites. He stole it and then let it die. It never died in my tenure.
Just a bunch of shit.
