Ending the ASAA Experiment

Postby Reddy » Thu Mar 09, 2017 6:18 am

It is now just about 4 months since the Authorised Second Active Accounts began. As stated at its beginning, this was an exercise to investigate how and if allowing multiple accounts for each player (the ultimate end goal) could work. With all the evidence gathered and analysed, Moderation regrets to say that such a development would very likely not work out and we have decided to suspend the ASAA experiment. No more new applications will be accepted (the applications thread will be locked) and those currently holding ASAAs will lose these on April 1, 2017 when the experiment formally comes to an end.

The key reason driving this decision is the awfully large number of invalid and incomplete applications. Roughly 36% of all applications for ASAAs were invalid. There was clearly widespread misinformation about the nature of the experiment, and at times some of the misinformed would even create active second accounts and then just casually inform Moderation that they had done so. Such misinformation and misunderstanding was in Moderation’s view, primarily driven by reluctance to study or even read the relevant rules.

Other reasons include an obvious trend of participants focusing most of their attention on one account and often neglecting the other one. Such a trend largely negates the oft-repeated argument that multis would revitalize the game. It is probably hard if not impossible to run two active accounts at the same time with similar levels of dedication and attention to each account. Concern has been raised over the possible conflict of interest that might arise especially where a player uses their second account to promote their nation or primary party’s interests in another nation.

The debate on allowing multiple accounts is obviously an old one. The pros and cons have been debated several times. There are many who are either passionately in favour and similarly a considerable number who are equally opposed. Given the controversy of the topic, Moderation would seek to ensure that such an undertaking would be done in conditions which would lead to minimal disruption and controversy. Our observations from the experiment do not allow us to be confident that such conditions could be guaranteed; not utopian conditions as such, but those kind of conditions where confidence in such a system would be high and deservedly so. Another final factor is of course the large increase in players over the past two years. Right now we have around 250 active players (excluding the ASAAs) This is just considerably over 50% of the available player spots. A universal authorization of multiing would likely leave some without a spot in the unlikely but plausible scenario where the vast majority or possibly every active player would seek to take advantage of such authorization.

In conclusion, Moderation would like to thank everyone who took part in this experiment, special thanks to those who participated for the full two months. We also thank the wider community for its patience and advice during these past four months.
To live outside the law, you must be honest.

Wellp can't say I disagree with you there. Sticking to one account encourages more dedication to said party.
