Consultation on Offensive and Hate Speech Regulation

Talk and plan things about the game with other players.

Something will call it "censorship", I call it a civilised gesture. Why there must be people who have to suffer to partecipate into a community in the name of the freedom to say whetever they want ignoring how their words can be disturbing and offensive for the others? And why making room for such false ideas and ideologies? I strongly support the mix proposed by Jamescfm.

I hope the regulation of Hate Speech only applies to OOC. Regulating In-Character content would cut the players freedoms too much.

It would not extend to role-play.

1. Respect.

All players and Moderators must be treated with respect and courtesy at all times.

[...]

1.4 Moderation reserves the right to take action against statements deemed to be promoting hatred, violence or discrimination against individuals or groups. Among the groups explicitly recognised here are those based on race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, sexuality, gender identity and physical or mental disability. Players are required to comply with Moderation requests in this regard.

1.4.1 Moderation prohibits the publication of pornographic material.

I'm submitting this as my final proposal, is there any last minute feedback?

I think it serves no purpose to explicitly recognize certain groups, when it's better served just to leave it as an umbrella term for any kind of such statement. I think it's better served to keep it broad and to not assign a defined hierarchy to which groups are more protected than others. Just keep it simple.

Point of inquiry though: does this provision essentially mean that if I call someone a retard or proclaim something to be "severely autistic", would it then be classified as hate speech? Not that I intend on going on such tirades, but I mean, when the glove fits...

In my opinion I think it makes sense to as you put it "explicitly recognize certain groups," it means there is no ambiguity in the rules and Moderation cant be accused of trying to bend the rules to fit their own purpose. We need to have a rule that is clear, simple and well defined for this sensitive issue and I think what James has proposed is perfect for this. We can always add an amendment later if needed.

Obviously it would depend on the context but that kind of insult would be dealt with under the current rules anyway. I'd rather you just treated fellow players in a sensible and considerate manner in the first place.

Regardless, I am now bringing this consultation to an official conclusion. I'd like to thank all who contributed; while I appreciate there will be some who may prefer the current situation, I am satisfied that the most recent proposal represents a consensus view. As a result, the Game Rules will be changed from:

1. Respect.

All players and Moderators must be treated with respect and courtesy at all times.

[...]

1.4 Free and vigorous discussion has always been a part of the Particracy community and we welcome it. However, Moderation reserves the right to move against statements deemed inappropriate that call for or explicitly endorse extreme activities that are hateful, violent or illegal. Players are required to comply with Moderation requests in this regard.

to now read:

1. Respect.

All players and Moderators must be treated with respect and courtesy at all times.

[...]

Thanks again, all!
