Population figures for the ex-colonies

Postby jamescfm » Fri Nov 30, 2018 5:09 pm

The Dovani section of the Global Role-Play Committee, in consultation with the rest of the Committee and Moderation, has formulated population figures for the Third World/former colonial nations to provide players with greater clarity and opportunity for role-play. The figures below can be considered accurate at the time of publication and will be open to review in future, given that population changes over time. If anybody has any queries or concerns, let us know and we will try to provide a prompt response.

This is very useful. I haven't had a clue what to set Dalibor's population as... Problem solved, thanks!

Glad you guys are happy! I've added the new population data to the main wiki page for each of the respective countries.

Noumonde, which I controlled until recently, has been previously RPed as having a population of 17 million (as one example. see here). I am pretty sure New Englia, which I also once controlled, had been RPed as having a population around about the 30 million mark, although I cannot find a source for that right now.

These are different to the figures you have given (16.87 million for New Englia, 6.58 million for Noumonde).

Personally, I do not have any major problem with your figures, and they ought not to unduly affect me should I ever take control of either of those nations again. However, obviously it does raise potential questions regarding the methodology used for coming up with these figures. ie. Did you look at the previous RP, to see what population figures (if any) have previously been given? I'm not suggesting you ought to feel obliged to honour any previously used figures, by the way, only that it might be worth at least looking at them and thinking about whether or not you can work with them etc...

On another subject, I'm personally particularly pleased by the large population sizes allotted to Kalkalistan and Vanakalam, the two Indian nations. I have not controlled either of those yet, but they are ones I have a particular interest in.

EDIT: On second thoughts, I acknowledge the obvious point that it's not too reasonable to expect you to read through reams and reams of news posts looking for population figures  .

I'll be quite frank in admitting that the figures were based primarily on more direct factors like size, environment and real-life equivalents than on any previously utilised figures of population. As well as the obvious difficulty that doing so would have presented, we reasoned that any clear or startling contradiction would be pointed out by whoever had formulated their own figure in the first place. With that said, we're going to adjust the figure for Noumonde to 16,584,430 for the purpose of respecting the previously established role-play. Given that there is no clear evidence in the case of New Englia, we think it would be best to maintain the figure initially proposed.
