Huge help that'll be with a $42 bn deficit... It's like Obama asking for 100 mil spending cuts when his deficit is $1.6 trillion (for now, I expect it will rise in the near future as the idiots spend more). Then again, this is coming from the same state that would rather free dangerous criminals (for lack of cash) than to cut their welfare, so no surprises.

It's better to call Austria by it's German name, it gives you a better idea of their character.

I think, in education at least, you get what you pay for. If something is adopted because it is 'cheaper' it is generally worse. If this wasn't the case, fee-paying schools (independent and public schools in Britain, presumably this is also true for private schools in America) would not reinvest massive amounts of money into getting the most expensive teachers, equipment and libraries, they would cut costs left, right and centre.

I think this largely depends on why something is cheaper. If it is because of less quality, it will be generally worse. If it is because of technological advancement, there is no reason why it should be worse. As long as California tries this with math and sience only, it's still an interesting experiment, although I don't think it will work out like they want to.

Not as wacky as those who elect our actors as their governor. (Or adopt Germans as their kings)

Seeing that the name is about 1200 years old, and that "reich" only sounds negative since its application together with "3rd", I don't think that you'd get very much out of this emphasis.

With education accounting for about 40 per cent of the state's budget...

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?????????????????? Holy SHIT!

Okay...*takes deep breaths*...back to reason. I personally think it's a very good idea since myself have had it with books generally. Opening the road to internet will also make things more interesting and motivate students in a controlled environment to search and explore new ideas easily. But I thought civilized european nations don't print new books every year, they just make sure students treat them good and after spending a year with them, they pass them to the next students. Unless my statement false, in which case the system is similar to ours in Greece: the government prints tons of books annually, as if it were an expensive hobby.

Bad timing I'd say for the change. Financial crisis? Hello? Digital education will help them right now?
