The UK Occupations

* 2 primary schools in Glasgow; http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/gla ... 983056.stm

* 3 Visteon factories; http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/7975890.stm

Of course there are not all related and have been done for varying reasons ranging from Israeli aggression in Gaza to proposed closures or redundancies but they do all make use of the same tactic and can be seen as part of a general trend of direct action. The recent G20 protests in London, namely the 12 hour Climate Camp in the heart of the City also illustrates this.

I'm not honestly sure what to make of it, really. The effectiveness of these measures, well, that's of course very questionable; what is true, however, is that these tactics are increasingly being seen as a viable option by radical groups; as to why, it's probably simply because it takes minimal effort, gains maximum attention, and of course if mishandled it's a nice easy way to make some martyrs for the movements in question.

And, of course, it has echoes of older times. You know, when protestors gave the appearance of being somewhat effective at what they did.

Yep, it's still nothing compared to the Jarrow Crusade and the General Strike, but we can thank the decline of the Communist Party for that.
