Do Socialists hate making money?

Postby Afrocentric » Sun May 18, 2014 4:03 pm

I will never accept or support Socialism, but I have to wonder, do Socialists actually hate the idea of making money or do they want to see EVERYBODY make the same amount of money, regardless of skills and other qualifications?

No, we want to abolish money, along with life, Chinese food and compound interest...

Alas i must disagree. Capitalism is simply the natural economic actions people take when allowed to choose. Essentially consumerism in its simplest form. To me you can look at this through two aspects. One, it cant be cheating because you are free to choose what to buy and how to buy it. You can choose to not buy something and just move on, you can choose to haggle over the price or pay what the seller is asking. Also you can look at this as wealth doesnt have to be plundered or cheated out of any one. Look at people like Bill Gates? How many millionaires did the success of Microsoft create? Or how much wealth did the start ups of Silicon Valley make? Keep in mind no one forced them to buy their products. People willingly gave over their money.

It's not as silly as it may seem to some. Some socialists want greater equality of outcomes but to otherwise retain most of our economic system; others want some sort of collective ownership of most things (like in a traditional kibbutz), which would not require the existence of money.

What's so silly about it? I've personally encountered Socialists who've told me that any kind of profit is bad and the elimination of currency would be the best thing for society. I've yet to meet any self proclaimed Capitalists which has taken this view or at the very least has called for equal income/wealth distribution regardless of job and/or skill level. It's definitely not a silly question and I'm generally curious as to why people who subscribe to Socialism think the way they do.

Apologies. I was thrown off by the way you worded the question. If you had instead asked: "Do socialists want to abolish money?", I would have taken the OP more seriously.

In any case, although I'm not a socialist, the answer is that some types of socialism would operate without currency, while others would retain currency.

Again, I'm not a socialist myself, but I would never use the word "socialism" to describe anything else than a system where the means of production are collectively owned (or not owned at all, if you prefer). A basically capitalist economy with some redistribution and a public sector is social liberalism or social democracy, not socialism.
