Olivia Chow was married to late Jack Layton the first NDP leader to put his party in the opposition 3 years ago. The reason why she will most likely loose is because people see her loosing and they do not want another Ford run (I'm sure you have heard of his legacy lol) so they are voting for Tory.

Just because she does not do good in Toronto does not mean she can do good in Canada in fact the opposite has happened with many politicians, if she went federal she would do good in BC and Ontario but she would probably completely loose Quebec.

I know that, but so? Surely even left-wingers aren't stupid enough to elect someone to the leadership simply on the basis of the fact that they were married to such-and-such.

Yeah, but people like to elect leaders with a record of success.

Apart from the perhaps dubious prospect of Chow, what do you think of Nathan Cullen and Paul Dewar?

Cullen would be a very prosperous candidate. He is though a bit of a Capitalist and a bit of a Skeptic when it comes to the environment to things the NDP are generally not, he would receive all of the parties Centre votes.

Paul Dewar is a more left candidate coming from a teachers background and is a strong labour activist and a supporter of unions two things most NDPers like! He is not fully fluent in a French though which would be a problem in leaders debates so he would have to learn it.

Does Bloc Quebecois compete for seats only in Quebec?

Yes they are the Quebec Nationalist Party even though the direct translation is the Quebec Bloc. They compete for seats in the national legislature/House of Commons so "Quebec" can be represented in it, when it comes to other issues they are Centre-Left. They also run in the Quebec National Assembly where they campaign for Centre-Left policies and referendums.

They have caused 2 referendums for Quebec Independance in 1985 and 1995, if Quebec ever did separate it would be the end of Canada in the sense that we would loose are Martitime Provinces as well.

The BQ is pretty much dead though, isn't it? Doesn't it have something like two paltry seats in the House of Commons? And the PQ took a bit of a beating in the last provincial election, didn't they?

Yes they are pretty much dead. They currently only have 4 seats in the House of Commons. They took a gigantic hit in the last election with both Canadian Nationalist parties making big gains, the Liberals gained a majority and Coalition Avenir Quebec (Coalition for Quebec's Future)/Conservatives made gains.

Ah, I see, I was wondering why there were no Tories in Quebec.

Yes they officially identify with the Conservative Party of Canada.

You see it in many provinces,
Saskatchewan Party - Conservative
Yukon Party - Conservative
BC Liberal Party - Conservative (Weird one there, kind of compares to the Australian Liberals I guess).
Coalition Avenir Quebec - Conservative

If you are an on looker and are not aware of this you think "wow there are many independent provincial parties" there is really only one the Wildrose Alliance in Alberta who are also very Conservative.
