What are you reading?

Many of us here are learned fellows and gals (do those exist on the interwebs) and I like peoples recommendations of current books they are reading, I imagine most of them political in nature but nevertheless let us know what you're reading and make your suggestions!

The Wreckage of Eight Purple Years (De puinhopen van acht jaar Paars) by Pim Fortuyn, the famous tall gay right-wing populist that was shot in 2002 by a vegan left wing extremist.

It's a political book on the Dutch "Purple" cabinets (1994-2002), which I believe were the first cabinets in the Netherlands to not feature Christian parties. A lot of progressive laws were passed in that period (gay marriage, abortion, etc.) which I consider a good thing but Fortuyn famously said that apart from that (and one financial thing) they did next to nothing. He was a very interesting man, I don't agree 100% with him but some things he said were absolutely correct in hindsight. It's very easy to read, Fortuyn has a great writing style.

That's really interesting...an American translation exists?

I'm not sure. I don't think so. It's very specific about Dutch politics, so I doubt they'd think it would sell any copies in international circles. Still, perhaps there is a biography in English, that would be an excellent read.

If I was forced to only recommend one book in my whole life that I think everyone should read, it would be The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists.

I recommend a couple of books.

1) Inside the Kingdom: Kings, Clerics, Terrorists and the Struggle for Saudi Arabia, by Robert Lacey, not only talks about Saudi History, but also the rise of Al-Qaeda and Bin Laden

and

2) Black Flags: The Rise of ISIS, by Joby Warrick, a succinct and up to date (mid 2015) treatment of the rise of the terror group

Read them in this order and you will learn why Syria is in the mess that it is in, and why Saudi Arabia seems to be more or less sitting on its hands, attacking Yemen instead of Daesh.

Saudi Arabia have actually said they are going to intervene in Syria with "boots on the ground" to "combat ISIS" recently. Likely in conjunction with the rumoured Turkish invasion.
