French Presidential Election, 2017

Postby Alain Delors » Sat Nov 26, 2016 5:16 pm

Being half French, I've been following the campaign for the French presidency with great interest. Today the Republicans will hold their primary runoff election between two former Prime Ministers, Alain Juppé and François Fillon, in order to select the nominee of the centre-right. Since I generally identify with the Gaullist camp, I would be happy with either of them being elected in the general, but I'm nevertheless strongly rooting for Fillon in particular. After having originally supported Sarkozy, I switched my support to him due to his wide-ranging plans for economic deregulation and spending cuts. I believe he would be the most transformational President in decades if he stays true to his promises and takes on the statist consensus that has so far prevented any major reforms. Furthermore, he would be the best candidate to beat back the dangerous ascent of the Front National, as he has also adopted reasonably tough stances on immigration and multiculturalism without veering too hard to the right.

I will confess I do not know follow French politics closely, but if I was a French citizen, I think I would probably vote to re-elect Hollande, despite all the various problems he's had.

My great fear is that Le Pen will win it. One hopes that is impossible, but who knows...

As you probably recall from our previous discussions, Alain, I've always been favourably disposed to Fillon. I'm glad to see that cretin Sarko humiliated like he was. I don't think that any of the right leaning candidates (including Fillon) will achieve any kind of serious economic reform. It remains my very unorthodox view that any kind of reform could only come from the centre-left (in a sort of "Nixon goes to China moment")

From what I hear, Manuel Valls is considered to be on the right wing of the Socialist Party. Could he be the right guy for you?

I'm not inclined to vote for anyone on the left, but if I had to, I would prefer Macron over Valls - he even left the Socialist Party to form a new movement called En Marche, with a "social-liberal" outlook (keep in mind that "social-libéralisme" is usually meant as an insult in France, used by orthodox-left members of the PS to discredit their more moderate counterparts). He's a more credible reformer in my opinion, Valls is more a "Sarkozy of the Left", as the French tend to call (or mock) him.

I think it could be him or the other one Emmanuel Macron. I mean I'm supporting Fillon...who has a Welsh wife (if that's enough to bring to his corner, Englishman ;) ) but I don't really expect much from him. I can't bring myself to support any kind of Socialist Party (even a moderate one) but I think Valls or Macron would do fine.

Marine Le Pen. She and Front National are France's only hope. Her winning would not only be good for France, but for all of Europe. If the AfD also wins in Germany, that would make 2017 the best year ever. And then there's the Dutch election on top of that.
I'm in a winning mood.

Let me tell you as a German, this isn't going to happen. The AfD will almost certainly enter the Bundestag and might do with >10%, but it is compeltely isolated and will not get close to power whatsoever. Merkel's popularity is already rising again and I'm pretty certain she will receive another term - not that I'm happy about it (I actually despise most of her current policies), but it seems, to use a term she has coined, pretty much alternativlos.
