German Federal Election, 2017

Postby Alain Delors » Mon Jan 30, 2017 9:50 pm

Another important election to be held in 2017, with its significane deriving partially from the fact that Germany (of all countries!) has become a kind of standard-bearer for the kind of left-liberal conventional wisdom that has recently suffered thumping defeats at the hands of the likes of Donald Trump and the Eurosceptic camp in the UK.

Since I'm personally affected by this election as a German citizen, here are my five cents: I think Merkel will be re-elected no matter what. Her party has stabilized in the polls and there is no feasible constellation excluding the CDU. The SPD might have recruited Martin Schulz, who is currently the subject of a media hype, but I fail to see how he could possibly close the 15% gap with the Christian Democrats. A red-red-green coalition remains out of reach because they lack the numbers, and in any case the CDU has a greater variety of options as its rapid leftward shift has mostly removed ideological obstacles to entering a coalition with parties such as the Greens. The AfD's performance will also be of great interest even though it won't have any practical impact because of the iron cordon sanitaire pulled up by the established parties (although it might become strong enough to force CDU, SPD and the Greens in a three-way coalition).

Personally, I will vote for the FDP, of which I remain a card-carrying member. The 5% threshold should not be a problem this time around, as it draws sufficient support from the small, but potent segment of voters dissatisfied with the CDU but hesitant to vote for the AfD. I must say that I will support my party without much enthusiasm however, as I have become increasingly sceptical of its Europhilia and sometimes excessive anti-AfD rhetoric. I was also disappointed when it was announced that the FDP would endorse Frank-Walter Steinmeier (SPD) for President, in order to "set an example against right-wing populism", as the leadership tried to justify the decision. I would also disapprove of the FDP serving in a coalition under Merkel again - not only because I dislike her policies, but also because she has destroyed the FDP already once during the 2009-2013 tenure.

With what little I know about current German politics, I would probably vote for Die Linke.

Germany's Social Democrats can no longer be seen as significantly left wing, except in their own self-concept and among their most uncritical traditional supporters. This saddens me, as in its very early days (1869-1914 ish) it maintained a somewhat radical and socialist agenda. Progressively it became more moderate and centrist, and now it could be seen by some as center right, although that characterization would not be without some criticism.

I hope the AfD does well, even though I know that they will be isolated in the Bundestag. I do think it's quite possible that they will be in a cabinet in 2021 or 2025, looking at how things have been going for SD in Sweden since 2010.
The longer the Merkel witch reigns the more the AfD will grow, so I sort-of wish her good luck in this election.

Re-entering the Bundestag after four years with a stunning result only to find ourselves having to prop up Merkel together in a coalition involving the Greens. Yikes  #FDPproblems

Minority gov't might be a preferable option though.

Yeh, why not just let Merkel play with the Greens? Have a feeling such a government will find it very difficult to satisfy market liberal/libertarian-oriented people.

Praise the Gods that Schultz wasn't elected. Not a fan of Merkel... but that man... :?

I don't like Merkel either and the prospect of a coalition with the Greens is horrifying- not just because of economic differences.. but there is no majority other than the so-called "Jamaica coalition" because the SPD has declared it will join the opposition and everyone rules out a deal with the AfD. Merkel has shown that she has no intention of handing the FDP a win between 2009 and 2013, leading to our infamous exit from the Bundestag in the previous election. I fear that this would repeat itself if we joined an even more left-leaning administration. Running to the right of Merkel on economics and immigration and ending up working with the Greens would be a tough sell.

I would have probably voted for Die Linke or the Greens. The result of the SPD is dissapointing, but you can't expect big results if you try to make "normal" and alliance with the CDU for years and years.

It's sad to see that support for AfD.

Fun fact: the AfD's lead candidate is a lesbian.

If you oppose the AfD, you are a homophobic misogynist.

I think in 2021 it's time for Germany to get its first lesbian chancellor!

No if you oppose a person for their politics and not a group for their sexual preferences. That's simple. Serbia has a lesbian Prime Minister and Ireland a gay one, both of them heavily critizised by LGBT groups not for their sexual orientation but for their ideologies
