Rise of the Ra'id

Postby Captain-Socialist » Thu Jul 16, 2009 2:30 pm

Qadir Thabit drummed his fingers on the table, it always took a while for the regional Rais and his squad of Mujahids to secure a hall, throwing out the hecklers and trouble makers so he could make his speech in safety. Last night they had done a bad job and a group of trade unionists had tried to charge the platform and steal the flag, so the meeting had ended with him leaving surrounded by his Mujahids without him being able to finish his point about Jewish blood sacrifice of Arab children. Tonight, he would talk about only one thing. This one thing was more important than the corporate state, more important than welfare, more important even than Zionism.
Communism!
Not just any kind of Communism, but Communism on our own doorstep. Communism had not ignited any great fear when it was in far away places like Keris, but now only a small stretch of water separated the old bumbling Islamic conservative soceity of Al'Badara with it's few political parties, inactive government and a hangover from the glory days of the Terran Caliphate from a all-out Communist revolution.
Communist revolution in Kafuristan!
He could imagine the meeting now, it would be different from the old meetings with his few fresh faced and young Mujahids, in their sandy brown uniforms, trying to win the hearts of apathetic and bemused voters while battling with equally few, fresh faced and young anti-fascists who would burst out from among the herd like a bull out of field of cows. Their fists and arms seeking out every bit of brownshirt flesh and insignia they could reach. He remembered the knuckle dusters, bricks, knives and handfuls of sand thrown into eyes. He remembered the tactics, when the antis would take a whole row of seats to themselves so when his Mujahids tried to remove the seemingly lone heckler in the middle of the row, it would seem like the entire people had spontaneously risen against fascism. How they would bring people from other towns and cities to partake in their "spontaneous" fights against his movement, all the while the bemused and oh-so apolitical public would go home having watched the whole affair like it was some kind of travelling circus and continue their silly little lives. Now it would be different, now they where frightened, now they saw reds under every rock, now they feared their mosques would be burned and their property stolen. Now the halls would be packed with thousands of transfixed faces, sweating and pushing for place as they try to hide their terror with stern expressions. They would boil in their terror, it would consume them whole as from his mind he would recall every atrocity story, every scare and every rumour that abounded about the Kafuri Red Terror (he needed no notes, he remembered every propaganda point like a camera) and then he could mold them like clay. In their terror they would love him and worship him like a god, they would scream "Ra'id!" hysterically and accept everything they had once rejected as unimportant or false in his programme. Now they feared for their property, they would pay any tax and accept any regulation on capitalism as long as they could hold their little deeds to their little houses and bless the corporate state as it turned them into state employees for saving them from socialism. And it was true, he didn't want to nationalise business, why do that when the businessmen themselves could be by fear turned into far more effective minions of the state willingly? Now they feared Communist Kafuristan, they would scream for his Imperialist conquest of a independent country which had long been Al'Badara next door neighbour like they where wolves who smelled the blood of lambs. Now they feared the nihilistic atheism of Communism, they would worship the state mindlessly and forget the Mullah's teachings as they pressed their ears against radios in total subjugation to the political religion of war and savagery he preached. Now they feared for their own people, they would gladly let the Jews suffer.
Now, when a heckler stood up to shout him down, he would have a stage light shine upon the hapless fool and declare "A communist!" and then the terrified sheep would become Mujahids without thinking twice, they would beat and kick the fool till he died and continue till he ordered them to stop. When he showed them the line upon which to sign their name they would obey and wear the brownshirt as if they had been in the movement all their lives, and when they returned home they would be shocked to remember that they had saluted him, fought their own neighbours and screamed for Fascism and they would realise like every drug addict they needed more and more and more and nothing could be done to stop them wanting more. Even hecklers, even Communist hecklers would join, for only the strongest will could resist his power over a crowd.

But even this wouldn't be enough to get up the stairway of power, for after the meeting he had a important dinner with a certain group of powerful gentlemen of the old classes. They didn't show their fear in such a undignified manner as did the public mob, but they felt it just as strongly. These men would be the last nail in the grave of democracy in Al'Badara, if he could persuade them. He tapped faster and louder upon the table, and glanced at his watch.
"Ra'id" said the Rais "the hall is ready."
"How many have you left?"
"We left only a few pockets in the middle, just wear they can't reach either the door or the platform."
"Good" said Thabit.

Re: Rise of the Ra'id

"This Ra'id is a bloody sore in our great nation, but he is a powerful one, my brothers. We must walk the path Allah has laid for us carefully, for a single mis-step will bring his power descending upon us. Should we eliminate him successfully, we may yet hold power in Al'Badara," stated one of the men in the small dark room. He was clearly aged far beyond his fellows, but his voice was still loud and powerful, drowning out any of the others who wished to intercede.
Another of the men spoke up as the former paused. The much smaller and nervous-looking man said, “You speak the truth, Amin, but we have neither the men nor the resources to destroy him and his scum. We cannot hope to hurt these fascists in our current state.”
A fist came crashing down on the table, silencing the man, as the owner of the fist shouted, “WE ARE THE JUNOOD ALLAH! We are the servants of Allah on Terra! Do you doubt His power!? Do you doubt that He would grant us the ability to strike down His foes!? I always knew you were never a pious man, Aziz, but that is heresy!” The speaker was the largest in the room and the terror in Aziz’ eyes was obvious to all within. Before he could even stammer out a response, two guards were on him and within seconds he had been taken from the room. “Are there any others who wish to defy Allah’s instructions!?” demanded the large man. Silence rippled across the room, interrupted only by the odd cough.
The look of success that had grown in the silence fell to pieces as another stood from his chair and addressed the group, “If you truly believe Allah’s instructions are to go against the Ra’id then yes, I do defy them. However, these instructions are no closer to being from Allah, than any other word that has come from Hussein’s mouth these past few hours.”
Hussein did not even bother to hide the contempt he felt for the new speaker, but as he started to signal for the guards to take him, Amin held up a hand, saying, “Control yourself, Hussein. Allow our friend to finish before you start accusing more of our inner circle of heresy.” The words from Amin quieted even the large man. There was no question on who lead the assembled group.
“Thank you, Your Majesty,” said the man, smiling calmly at Amin, “While eliminating the Ra’id is not the path that Allah has set for us, have no doubt that He has set one. It is true that if we allow the Ra’id to remain, we will lose power to him. However, this is not such a terrible prospect. The people are with him in his attacks on the communist, they will rally against us should we choose to oppose him. He will give us the image of Allah-hating communist scum if we do not support him, but if we do, he will allow us to keep some of our power. Together we would have unquestionable control of Al’Badara and protect it from the communists across the Badaran Strait! It is our ONLY option.”
Hussein snorted as the man finished his short speech, “Kébé has been corrupted in his travels around Terra, he knows not what is right for this nat-“
SILENCE!” Amin shouted, cutting off Hussein, mid-word, “It is you, Hussein who knows not what is right. Hold your tongue, or I shall have it ripped from your mouth. Sefu, how can you assure that he will not betray us, and even then, how could we possible help him? You have already said yourself he has the support of the people.”
Sefu Kébé had kept his calm and pleasant expression throughout the exchange, even as he answered, “I did indeed state that, Your Highness, and I stand by it. The Ra’id has the support of the people, but he does not have the support of the clergy. We can give him that. If the Soldiers of Allah supported him, the clergy could not refuse their support. As for the matter of his continuous loyalty to any agreement we may come to in terms of sharing the power, the Ra’id is now a very public figure, and you are still much respected by the people. They shall find out if he betrays you, and they shall turn against him.”
Amin considered the words carefully, as the others in the group looked around at their fellows trying to identify a common stance without speaking and interrupting the exchange. Amin sighed, and rubbed his temples slowly. Looking back up at Sefu, he asked, “When can we meet him?”
“HERESY! This is heresy! Allah shall punish all who accept this decision! You will burn in the pits of Hell, Amin, along with Kébé!” Hussein yelled as he charged for Amin. Guards rushed to meet him, and before he was even close to the leader of the group, he was pinned down on the ground.
Anger flashed bright and hard in Amin’s eyes, and he spit down at Hussein. “I warned you, not once, but twice to restrain yourself. That was more than you deserved. Allah may be merciful, but I am not,” he said, before turning to the guards, “Dispose of him, I care not how, I care not where, so long as I never see his face again. Nodding, they gagged and dragged Hussein from the room. Finally, to Sefu he asked, “Well?”
Sefu Kébé allowed himself a self-rewarding smile as he explained the arrangements he had made with the Ra’id. He had done all he could to align the Junood Allah with the Ra’id, now the means of success rested solely in the hands of the fascist.

Rahman Qasim whispered into Thabit's ear "Why deal with this Capitalist worm, Ra'id? Look at him, he's not one of us" he gestured at the smiling Kébé on the opposite end of the room.
"Qasim, my old Friend" replied Thabit "We must not make an enemy of everyone, did you think class collaboration meant alliance between the little worker and the little businessman? At some point we have to choose between the big worker Unions and the big business monopolies, and that choice isn't a free one. The Trade Union Majlis has declared itself anti-Fascist, and it's sympathies lie with the Reds in Kafuristan."
Qasim was angered "Our programme states that the Unions are-"
"When we wrote that programme we where a tiny group of radicals dreaming of the return of the Godwins, but now we are a nation-wide movement and the stakes are high. It was easy to talk about the coalition between socialism and nationalism then but now we know that-" his hands formed fists and his friendly manner deteriorated "- the left will never change. Always bent on their obsessive unnatural Marxism, destruction of the sprit of man in a lifeless utopia-"
"Ra'id" Qasim muttered fearfully "I understand."
"Good" said Thabit, glaring "now call Kébé and his lot here."

* * *

After the pleasantries of the dinner had ended, Thabit gestured to Qasim to bring the documents.
"Gentlemen, I show you the future of our nation."
A hush fell upon the company, Qasim appeared with the vital documents, and spread the map out on the table.
"What, may many of you ask, is this?" said Thabit "I'll tell you" his voice lowered "I am no mere anti-communist demagogue playing on the current situation to win power over Al'Badara, I'm carrying the historic mission of our nation forward. Do you remember that once their existed a Union between Kafuristan and Al'Badara? The United Majatran Republic, and do you remember that crippled by civil war and the chaos of Godwinism our nation stood second place to Kafuristan in that Union? Well, now long after the dissolution I will right that wrong"
"Al'Badara was always the most cultured, most pure and most intelligent of the Arab peoples yet we have always stood second place to the culturally inferior Kafuri because of Kafuri's oil wealth which was of such importance to the white people? Well, with this grand act of conquest, I purpose that by taking Kafuristan by force we will unite the Majatran Arabs and by controlling the oil will create the greatest Empire ever seen! The United Majatran Empire of Al'Babara and Kafuristan!"
He pointed to the map triumphantly, an old Mullah at the back whispered "An invasion plan?"
"Yes friends, an invasion plan! With the Communists in power the entire basis of the Kafuri balance of power is threatened, and we can change it forever if we intervene now. And that is where you come in, while we rule at home I purpose that Kébé Industries and Amin Al-Hassan use their influence to bring about a pro-Badaran coup against the Communists while our army crosses the Badaran Strait. We will have great need of a third column in this war."

Sefu Kébé was nearly as shocked as the members of the Junood Allah by Thabit’s proposal. Of course he’d suspected that the fascist would march against the Kafuris, but he hadn’t thought that the Ra’id would use it to sweeten the meal he hoped to serve Al-Hassan, and Kébé himself. From the reaction that Amin had shown, it was a successful tactic. A charismatic fascist, Kébé thought to himself, is always dangerous. He’d have to keep a closer eye on who else Thabit might bring into his circle. With his familiar smile, Kébé responded to the proposition, “Kébé International Industries has been looking to involve itself in the Kafuri oil market for quite some time. Doing so in the name of Allah and Al’Badara would be an honor.”

Kébé had been intending on accepting any proposal the fascist threw at him. He was not so blind from power to know that Thabit would succeed with or without him. Should it be without him, he was certain the end result would be quite unfortunate for himself and his corporation. Amin Al-Hassan, on the other hand did not have such a strong belief of the risk Qadir Thabit and his fascists posed him.

After Kébé had finished voicing his acceptance, Amin stated, “With no offence intended, Ra’id, I cannot trust your offer. I have little doubt that Kébé and I together have enough influence to launch this coup, but we will never be able to hold the government without the Badaran military by our side. As I would be presumably leaving the Badaran government and military in your hands, should you not deliver those troops there is a great likelihood that the situation will turn quite dangerous for me. Should I fall to our enemies in Kafuristan that would leave Al’Badara completely under your control. I must have assurances that you will not betray the Junood Allah and I.”

Amin remembered Kébé’s reasoning earlier that day, but his fellow Junood Allah members had to hear the assurances from fascist’s own mouth. If he could placate their fears, Amin would be more than willing to work towards the goal he had set forth.

Thabit was slightly taken aback by the question, as he was unaccustomed to being answered back too, but then Al-Hassan was royalty probably felt just the same. He put on his most empathic expression and spoke in his most earnest sounding voice "Of course the Badara military will support the coup, otherwise it would be pointless, and as it clear from my rough and military attire I am not one to shrink from a fight. If you don't believe me look at the bill we have prepared, in which it clearly states we will go to war as soon as we gain power. You see, to us Fascists, war is not only a means but a philosophy, the lifeblood of civilisation itself. We wouldn't dream of abandoning you to the Reds, that would be giving you all the glory, and after my militaristic propaganda the Al'Badara people will never take me seriously as a man of peace."

Amin took a quick glance around him as the Ra'id spoke, gauging the reactions of the others of the Junood Allah present. Two in the back looked unimpressed, one of the few women in the group appeared to have rolled her eyes at the man as he spoke, and there was a small group to the side whispering amongst themselves looking uncertain, but for the rest gathered the answer seemed sufficient. He would have to deal with that handful later, but for now there was an urgent question on his mind. "You speak truthfully and wisely, Ra'id. I believe I speak for my brothers when I say that our trust is with you. However, there is another matter I must ask you about. What of the other communists? The Selucians are rallying around the Communists, and the pathetic liberals are offering little resistance to their growing influence. Only Cildania and the Sea of Majatra seperate us from the Selucian Isles. They will not take kindly to our coup in Kafuristan. With our army invading as well, we will be vulnerable to their attacks."

Thabit was seriously roused now, he was almost shouting when he declared "If the Selucians dare come to the aid of the Kafuri Reds I will unleash not only soldiers against them but the wrath of the people themselves! I will begin a Jihad the likes of which has never been seen since the days of the prophet himself! My Mujahids will drive planes into Communist ships, we will set off human bombs in their midst and sniper and hound them alone every street corner! IF THEY WANT TOTAL WAR I WILL GIVE IT TO THEM! If the reds bring allies from abroad, I will bring greater and stronger allies to our side. Already, the ranks of Fascism and it's kindred movements are swelling daily and will never NEVER surrender the reds!"
He wiped his forehead with his sleeve, and smiled as if nothing had happened and said "What shall we call our Kafuri regime?"
