Jan Haling Hails Victory

Image

President Jan Haling has been declared the winner of the December 4034 elections, in a triumphant first-round win with 52% of the vote. The Socialdemokratiska Partiet's Paul Baker hoped to capitalize on the parliamentary gains in the last election, but ultimately came in second with about 47% of the vote. The Independent Progressive candidate failed to gain traction, and received less than 1%. Jan Haling in his speech thanked Paul Baker for a rousing challenge to "keep him honest", but ultimately declared "the spirit of Telamon is the spirit of free enterprise".

On the parliamentary side of things, Parliamentary Leader Wilhelm Westerwel found himself with a narrow majority, with 54 seats to the 46 of SP. The former Statsminister and younger brother of party founder Gustaf Westerwel thanked the voters, but ultimately said he was going to retire from front-bench politics and would not serve as Statsminister. The young Henrik Oberling, the spry grandson of Telamon President Karl Oberling, will take over the leadership of the party. Young Oberling took the stage to tell the people that it was time to come together and work to restore the entrepreneurial spirit that made Telamon great. He also spoke highly of Fmr. Statsminister Westerwel, saying that he was responsible for victory after victory.

Society of the Brethren Picks up "National Concern" in Telamon
Committee on National Legislation begins campaigning for Office

March 18, 4098
Telamon Rampart, Sevescia

Sister Jill Solveig, Clerk of the Telamon Yearly Meeting and the Committee on National Legislation

The tiny meeting of the Society of Brethren in Telamon, which was founded in Telamon 10 years ago, has decided to launch a Committee on National Legislation. The Clerk of the Telamon Yearly Meeting, Jill Solveig, announced that the committee, which itself is less than a year old, will be fielding a slate of candidates for seats in the February elections next year. The Committee has already begun lobbying the Parliamentary Congress on a bill establishing national supports for religion, and has recently promoted a bill that would outlaw nuclear, biological and chemical weaponry. "Our position on these matters is fairly clear," Solveig said in a recent interview. "We may be a small Committee at the moment, but of course if we continue to follow our leading, Telamon can become a haven for those who want peace in the world."

Solveig noted that the Committee has not decided on whether to run someone for President. "We need to have clearness on this matter. Right now, the Meeting is fairly small. If we are going to work to move the country more in the direction we would like to see, we are going to need to generate support among the population first. The Meeting has to grow. Largely through the efforts of our outreach Committees, we have established permanent Meetings in each of the five Landstingen, but to transform the nascent efforts into a political movement, we require mass participation. Meanwhile, we will continue to work to pick up seats in the Congress here and there, as we can, and when we are in more of a position to begin making the changes we would like to see in Telamon, then we will proceed."

When asked about overarching goals for Telamon, Sister Solveig listed Peace, Simplicity, Integrity and Stewardship as main goals of the Committee. She also noted more specific policy goals. She noted that Telamon could play a role in Makon affairs if they were to potentially reach out to either Hutori or Davostag. "Probably Hutori, given Davostag's commitment to darkness in the world..." she noted. She also wants to see Telamon join with other peaceful nations in the world in outlawing weapons of Mass destruction. "There are a few countries who have gone all out and have fully outlawed these dreadful machines of death. The Committee would like to see Telamon join those peaceful nations." When asked about the economy, Solveig answered, "We would like to see responsible and sustainable use of our national resources. We are not a socialist party, and many of our members express concerns about socialism. We oppose large corporations who pollute the environment, but if they use the resources we have in our country responsibly, why couldn't all enjoy prosperity? The government has a role in ensuring that we have a fair playing field and that regulations are followed for the benefit. Beyond that, the government doesn't need to be running the economy..."

This development will bring a new face to Telamonese politics. The Society of the Brethren is expected to grow in Telamon, perhaps slower than it has in other nations, but nonetheless, if success breeds success, and the Committee is able to secure a few seats in the upcoming election, it may be possible that the Society will attract new members.

Brethrenist Government: "All Military Agreements currently in effect will be Abrogated"
Reset in Foreign relations seen as part of overall Constitutional Reform in Telamon

February 18, 4101
Telapolis, Migadon Landsting

Brethrenist Government eschews traditional board room setting for a "Meeting for Business"

Ringing in a New Century, the new Brethrenist Government in Telamon has announced that it will unilaterally abrogate all military arrangements with other country. Utilizing what is rapidly becoming known as "Plain Speech", the new President of Telamon, Sister Jill Solveig, added a "minute" to the official notes of the Government "The Meeting comes to unity over agreements with other nations which empowereth militarism in Telamon and Makon. The Meeting calleth upon the Legislature to repeal all agreements of this sort, for the benefit of all, and the adoption of all necessary legislation which promotes elimination of weapons of death which so plague the nation."

The rise of Brethrenist government was both unexpected ten years ago, and was greatly aided by the National Party going defunct. The Society of the Brethren can only claim less than 10,000 members nation wide, but the Committee on National Legislation, which has been rebranded the Brethrenist Party of Telamon following the election, was left as the default Party of Government. The Brethrenists wasted no time to propose dramatic changes to the Constitution, which suggested a change in the very organization of the Government, an elimination of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons, a demilitarization of the police and changes to the Flag. Time will tell if Brethrenism actually takes off in Telamon, but with a single Party constituting the government of Telamon at this time, reforms look to continue to deepen.

Brethrenism Spreading in Telamon
Most dramatic growth among Youth

Telapolis, Migadon
January 12, 4102

Image
Telamonese Youth gatherings, like this one in Migadon, have become a fairly common scene throughout Telamon

Largely sponsored by the newly elected Brethrenist Party of Telamon, youth gatherings and adult auxiliary meetings have been popping up all over country. Usually, large houses which are being converted to Meeting Houses at a noticable rate, are the sites of these gatherings. It is clear that many people who are attending these meetings, who are overwhelmingly young (the median age being just 16), are not disillusioned followers of other faiths, but instead, see Brethrenism as a different facet of a more general Hosianism. "I was baptized as a Hosian. My great Grandparents were the last Patriarchalists in the family, and since then, we have been non-denominational. But Brethrenism offers something a bit different, a bit more. It doesn't really conflict with my beliefs at all- it makes them stronger, " said Magda Sjostvold. 14, from Vojiscia. These sentiments were echoed among most of the people we spoke with.

The Brethrenist Party, which has governed Telamon since 4101, supports the development. Minister of Education and Culture, Sister Andrea Schmidt recently commented on the growth of the Faith in Telamon. "We believed since the beginning that if we could open the doors, the public would respond. Our job is to clear away roadblocks so that people can learn about Brethrenism and maybe gain some insight about it."

When numbers were last reported, it was believed that there were less than 10,000 Brethren in Telamon. Over the last year, that number has exploded- The Government believes that there are nearly 50,000 Brethren in Telamon now, many of them young and idealistic like Sjostvold. The rise of the Brethren in Telamon is not without raction, of course. Already a new Party looks to explicitly oppose Brethren in the halls of the Legislature, which the Brethren have renamed the "Committee of the Whole." Time will tell whether this development is permanent, but the Brethren, in their short tenure have already made major changes to Telamon's policy, and are currently moving to abrogate several long standing treaty arrangements to free up policies in the Legislature.

Brethrenism has a toe hold in Telamon, and it will be up to young people like Sjostvold and thousands like her to carry forward the change into the coming years.

Brethrenists Boycott Government
Solveig: "There is something not right about DLP-Fascist Union"

Telapolis, Telamon
March 18, 4104

Brethrenist Leader Jill Solveig, former Clerk of Telamon, issued the following statement on the apparent union between the Fascists and the so-called "Democratic Labour Party."

"The Brethrenists in Telamon are watching the situation in our country with great concern. The Brethrenist Party permitted elections with great trepedation, but it is clear that our suspicion was warranted. As soon as the election occurred, the two generally active anti-Brethrenist Parties took the liberty to vote together on major legislation meant specifically to remilitarize the Republic, to eliminate any sort of social welfare in the budget. We are watching their cynical and dangerous cooperation closely: there is something that is amiss, something is just not right about the DLP-Fascist union.

"So much for progressivism," said Solveig in relation to the sham claims made by DLP's Platform. "What these two Parties have accomplished is a general duping of the people of Telamon, and we will not in any way take part in it. No votes for DLP or Fascist Legislation. They may experience some temporary success, but the way these votes happen, eventually they will knee cap each other. One way or another. We will bide our time- If there is one thing the Brethren are good at, it is waiting."

Meanwhile, the Brethrenists in Telamon now possess a potent organizing tool. Opposition to the Fascist Majority has led to a dramatic uptick in Brethrenist recruitment. In the three months immediately following the election, more than three million Telamonese Citizens have joined the Brethrenist faith. Several monthly meetings have sprung up across the country. Brethrenism is the fastest growing religion in Telamon, and the threat of fascist government will serve as an effective recruiting tool for the next three years.

Brethrenist Party disbands
Collapse of Theorcracy leads to Political Withdrawal
Telapolis, Migadon
January 10, 4107

The Brethrenist Party of Telamon has officially withdrawn from Telamon politics. The Society of Brethren in Telamon, representing more than 7 million Citizens in Telamon, in a deal to deny the Fascist Union power, agreed last year to abandon the theocracy. Without a theorcracy, the Society has recently decided to not contest in elections any longer.

Clerk of the Yearly Meeting, Sister Jill Solveig, said, "We accomplished some pretty important things in our time in government, but we have sort of lost our reason for being in government without the theocracy. If Telamon remains conducive to development, we will continue to practice evangelism. However, we have a critical mass in Telamon now, so it is just as likely that we will keep to ourselves and leave the politics for the vain glorious and egoistic. We wish the Government of Telamon peace."

And, with that, a curious chapter in Telamonese history closes.

Mark Paulson, the man behind LDP
Telapolis, Migadon. May 4124

Image
Mark Paulson, Chairman and co-founder of LDP

With the election rapidly approaching Telamon we decided to sit down with one of the newest faces in politics. Mark Paulson is the chairman and co-founder of the liberal party LDP, he's been the loudest political voice in Telamon during the last term and has been working tirelessly with new reforms.

The following is from our interview with Mr. Paulson (I = interviewer, P = Mr. Paulson)

I: Hello and thank you for coming

P: No problem, thank you for having me

I: So, I think it would be appropriate to start with your background story. I'm sure many in Telamon have already seen you on television when you've tried to convince people in congress to vote on your many bills, but I doubt that anyone really knows where you come from. So for starters, how old are you and where did you grow up?

P: Haha, well yes I've been quite eager to get things done and to make mine and LDPs voice heard. But anyhow, I was born 4088 so as of right now I'm 36 years old and a grew up in one of Telapolis southern suburbs, mostly populated by working class families.

I: Was you family a part of the working class?

P: Yes very much so, my father was a union man and an construction worker, and my mother worked in a local factory.

I: A union man you say, were you raised in a political household?

P: Yes politics was a dominant subject of discussion in the Paulson household, well it still is at family gatherings. My father is a very loyal communist and has allways been, and my mother is more of a democratic socialist. So I was without doubt raised as a socialist, but I was never as radical as my father.

I: But if you were raised as a socialist, how come you co-founded the Liberal Democratic Party and are now, I assume, a liberal?

P: Well, I'm a social liberal. But yes I'm not a socialist anymore, most of that has to do with my education I suppose, I have a economic degree from the university of Telapolis. During my years at the university I gradually lost my belief in state monopolies, but don't get me wrong, I'm no market fanatic either. I believe that the state and the market has to work in a symbiosis with eachother. And as for why LDP? Well, it's quite simple, congress has for a along time been dominated by radical left and/or right-wing parties. So me and my co-founder Oscar Lindman decided that Telamon needs a pragmatic centrist voice.

I: Alright, thank you for sharing that with us. But now I think it's time to move on and talk about the upcoming election. What do you think about LDPs chances to gain seats in congress, and is anyone going to run for president on LDPs ticket?

P: Well most of the recent polls have LDP receiving anywhere between 5 to 10 percent of the popular vote, so I'd say our chances of entering congress is very good. The goal that me and LDPs board have set for this election is to gain 20 seats in congress, I think we have a fairly good chance of succeeding with that goal. As for the presidential election, I'm LDPs candidate. We decided that since I'm the one who have had the most media coverage and are most well know in our party I should be the candidate, for future presidential elections however we will have party primaries to decide candidate.

I: So if LDP get 20 seats in congress, then what's your plan? Do you wish to be part of a coalition or even have a part in the cabinet?

P: It's our first election and it will be everyone's first term in congress, so I don't think we as a party is mature enough to be part of a ruling coalition. So for this election and the coming term we will be independent in congress and have a pragmatic approach to votes and negotiations. So a vote for LDP is a vote for pragmatism and negotiations, and not for a ideological block.

I: So to finish this interview off, what's yours and LDPs most important promises for this term?

P: To keep working tirelessly for a more democratic and open Telamon. But also, to push the future minister of finance to deal with the unnecessarily large budget surplus that Telamon have, it could easily be used for the benefit of Telamons people through spending increases or tax cuts.

I: Thank you for taking part in this interview and good luck

P: Thank you

Storming Success- SDA wins 87 seats, Looks to Form Coalition
Image
Padraig Pearse addresses supporters in the Capital

The SDA claimed victory for the left and democracy in the elections, storming from obscurity to the second largest party in mere months.
Joined by some of the 87 Congressmen elected on the SDA ticket, Pearse savoured the success by acknowledged the challenges ahead.

"Friends- the night belongs to the Social Democrats! We now head the centre-left coalition in Congress, having been nowhere just months ago. Close to eleven and a half million people voted for us, and we shall not let them down...we have see the resurgence of fascism tonight. It would be wrong not to recognise the NFU is the largest party. But they cannot form a majority. They cannot function as a minority. We have the upper hand, we have the momentum, we will form the next government! We have reached out to others, including the Radical Workers and the Liberals. A Grand Coalition of the left and the centre must form to keep the right at bay. The work continues, and we edge closer to formalising our coalition, but for now I tell you to celebrate. Savour our triumphs. Comfort our candidates who were unsuccessful. Party for the next few hours. But I tell you want you do afterwards. Tomorrow morning, head back to your constituencies- and prepare for Government!"

4125 Election. Results and analysis
January 4125

Presidential Election

First round
Mark Paulson (LDP) - 32,42%
Paul Grigaitis (NFU) - 30,77%
(incumbent) Colt Craft (RWM) - 24,67% (Endorsed by SDA)
Preth Keiston (UFI) - 12,1%

Political commentators analysis: The result of the first round in the presidential election is quite interesting, for starters it's somewhat rare to see the incumbent president be beaten in the first round. Colt Craft received 38,87% the first round in the last election (4123) which means that he lost 14,2% even with and early endorsement from SDA. There are many possible explanations to why that happened, but my theory is that Craft lost some votes due to the fact that he's been a part of the ruling establishment, which usually hurts a candidate in elections where there are many newcomers. That in combination with more center leaning voters leaving Colt for a more centrist candidate such as Mark Paulson. However what might be even more interesting is how Mark Paulson, a 37 years old newcomer that has never held elected office won the first round. An explanation to that might be that many voters liked the idea of a centrist and pragmatic presidential candidate in contrast to the very radical ideological candidates that they've had do choose between before.

Second Round
Mark Paulson (LDP) 55,13%
Paul Grigaitis (NFU) 44,87%

Political commentators analysis: The second round were, given the circumstances, less interesting. Since it was between Paulson, a centrist and a Grigaitis, an outspoken fascist. Paulson most likely received both the centrist votes and most of the leftist ones aswell, while Grigaitis got the voters to the right. In the end Paulson won with a reassuring 10,3% lead.

Election for the National People's Congress
Votes - Seats
NFU - 31,21% - 127 (+1)
SDA - 21,93% - 87 (New)
LDP - 18,96% - 76 (New)
RWM - 18,84% - 75 (-82)
UFI - 9,06% - 35 (-82)

Political commentators analysis: The two newcomers received an impressing 40,9% of the popular vote and a total of 163 congressional seats, while both RWM and especially UFI lost large portions of their earlier voters. All while NFU practically stood still, they gained one extra seat but lost 0.5% of the popular vote compared to last election. I would say that it's quite obvious that a large portion of Telamons voters longed for a change, and that's why the two new parties drained so many voters from the old ruling coalition. SDA most likely received a large portion of their voters from RWM, while LDP gained voters from UFI.

Mark Paulson, new president of Telamon!
Image
Mark Paulson greeting the crowd during election night, just before his speech

My dear friends, we won! The people of Telamon has spoken, they want a pragmatic government that takes responsibility, and that is what we will give them! I want to thank every single one of you, for campaigning vigorously the past few weeks, it's thanks to your efforts that we stand victorious here today! We have an exciting time ahead of us, Telamon is in dire need of change after the past decades of totalitarianism. So naturally the first order of the day will be to keep the fascists out of government and out of political influence, and for that we need a grand democratic coalition, I urge my fellow centrist and leftists colleagues in congress to unite and vote in favor of the new cabinet that has been put forth by SDA. When we have secured a new grand coalition and secured Telamons political stability, only then can we move forward and create a free and equal country, for all!

Padraig- the new man at the top
Image
How the sons of immigrants rose to the top of Telamon politics

Padraig Pearse. James Connolly. Michael Collins.
Hardly the most Telamon names imaginable. But these three men who grew up in the same immigrant neighbourhood, went to the same school and forged similar paths through the trade union are now the triumvirate at the head of the SDA, the centre of the new coalition government.

Pearse was born in Valtimo in 4075, to parents who migrated to Telamon as part of a company relocation along with their colleagues- including the Connollys and the Collins'. Named for the patron saint of the old country, Pearse and his friends excelled in school and attended the nation's top university. Achieving a first class BA in politics and sociology before completing his masters in political science, Pearse joined the Civil Service. The shifting fascist, theocratic and centrist governments shaped his politics, and he threw himself into the trade union movement, being elected Vice Convener of the Public Sector Union in 4109.

12 years later, he united with his childhood friends to form a rival leftist party to the RMW, hoping to push it left and work harder for the working classes.
Senior SDA insiders have revealed that the election result was a shock- their own polling had them barely scrapping in, with too few seats to impact the Parliamentary arithmetic. The rapid rise puts Pearse in strange territory- at the heart of government leading a hardy band of newcomers to politics.
His task- to keep his party in line, to hold a coalition together in the face of the NFU, and to enact real change- seems mammoth.

Only time will tell if he and the SDA will rise from here, or if this early entrance into the upper echelons proves their undoing.
