"Wei Wu Wei" Measures Pass, Stocks Tumble

The laissez-faire economic reforms proposed by the Concord Party and Jien-Democrats finally passed the Grand Assembly. In response, the Dengzhou Index of high tech companies finally crashed, leaving many in the tech industry worried about the ability to stay in business. This followed recent corporate bankruptcies of numerous large businesses, forcing investors to consider eliminating large and bloated companies for leaner, more competitive small enterprises. For certain, Yingdalan companies are going to have to learn that the government is not going to come to the rescue and will support the educations of individuals who will hopefully replace them.

With the new budget, the Government now has the ability to fully implement reforms that will jump start the economy. The increase in education spending has been invested in teaching students more about business, economics, math, and science. Yingdala recognizes that knowledge economies with highly tech manufacturing are preferable to any other. The education reforms should jump-start innovation and greater technical know-how.

Advances in the science and technology budget also seek to generate new sources of economic might for the nation. Much of this money is being channeled to new forms of sustainable, high yield farming, better medicine, and an improvement in military technology. This is coupled with greater defense spending, which the Government hopes will support the defense sector. Seeing as this area is one of the few the Government must actually play a role, the Cabinet has issued orders for total naval reformulation and modernization to deal with the growth of piracy. Yingdala is, after all, a trading nation. The seas must be free for commerce.

Hopefully, with the rock bottom of economic performance coming soon, the only way for the economy to go is up.

Large Corporations Dissolve, Infrastructure Modernization Begins

As the economy continues to decline with no government intervention, stocks are near rock bottom. The Yingdalan Chamber of Commerce called an emergency meeting to discuss private sector options. After a weekend-long conference, the Chamber recommended large corporation to dissolve into smaller units to eliminate inefficiencies, promote competition, and thus achieve innovation. Large companies throughout Yingdala have begun to dissolve into smaller entities, including: Kuaihai Computers, Yingdala Technologies, and Weilai Robotics. Total corporate restructuring and dissolution of large apparatuses are appearing to be better options than bankruptcy.

Prime Minister Liu Guo, in conjunction with the government's armed forces modernization initiative, has made infrastructure modernization a primary goal of his administration. The plan released by the government shows massive contracts to private construction companies to rebuild roads and bridges, first in the rural areas and last in the cities. These projects will take at least 5 years to complete, but will guarantee thousands of Yingdalans jobs in manual labor and construction. Once the infrastructure has been modernized, domestic commerce should become more efficient and make things cheaper for consumers, hoping to spur domestic consumption.

"New" Progressives Pledge Fresh Start for Yingdala

Image

A revitalized center-left has returned to Yingdala nearly a decade after the assassination of President Zhou Xuegang and the subsequent collapse of the Third Republic in 4198. Ms. Shi Yawen (史亞文), once Mr. Zhou’s trusted lieutenant, has taken up the torch of the cause under the banner “New Progressive Party” (新進步黨).

Noticeably absent from her public statements is any mention of debate over the monarchy. When pressed on the question, she said simply, “To my mind, the people have spoken. Who am I to question either the will of the people or the mandate of heaven?”

Instead, Ms. Shi has focused her statements primarily around the theme of economic justice. Standing before the Grand Assembly in support of her party’s proposed luxury tax bill, she said:

We believe a harmonious society is one in which all members contribute to the common good. A just society, in turn, is one in which those who receive greater privilege are asked to take greater responsibility for the well being of that society.

We further believe that sound governance requires sustainable fiscal management. It is unacceptable that our nation should run a deficit with no end in sight, and further unacceptable that the burden for rectifying this imbalance should fall entirely on the backs of good working-class and middle-income Yingdalans that have already seen health benefits erased, schools closed, and housing guarantees mercilessly eliminated.

A luxury tax is a fair and responsible way to rectify this imbalance. Those who indulge in their wealth should be the first to contribute to the greater good.

Voters Rebuke “Laissez-Faire”; Progressives Return to Power

Image
Ms. Shi Yawen, newly-minted Grand Master

The New Progressive Party scored a resounding victory in the recent election, returning the center-left to power with an outright legislative majority after nearly a decade on the political sidelines. The scope of the victory seemed to surprise even the New Progressives.

Progressive leader Ms. Shi Yawen, sworn today as Grand Master, pledged allegiance to the sovereign, Wu Ren, and ruled out any constitutional changes.

Ms. Shi also emphasized cooperation in her inaugural address. “Today, we find ourselves with an historic opportunity to make good on our platform of economic justice for all Yingdalans. But we would be mistaken if we mistake opportunity for entitlement and squander the chance to build a solid foundation for the future.”

The New Progressive Party’s deputy leader, Mr. Howard L.R. Kang (孔理銳), has been asked to form a Government. Mr. Kang is said to have opened talks with the Concordists, Jien-Democrats, and the Liberal Progressives on a possible coalition.

Emperor Dead; Dranlanders Claim Throne; Grand Master Mulls Response

Image
Grand Master Shi Yawen speaks from her official residence.

Grand Master Shi Yawen spoke tonight from her official residence to announce the death of the Emperor Wu Ren, aged 41. The emperor, she said, had died suddenly and without an announced heir.

Appearing shaken in her address, she further announced that Dranland’s House of Hwangje has communicated its demand through the National Conservative Party to seat a member of the Dranlander clan on the throne. She said, “this is a grave occasion and one that will require our full nation’s resolve.”

A formal funeral is scheduled for next week, and only after that point is G.M. Shi prepared to further address the Dranlander claims and the future of the monarchy.

Grand Master Shi Yawen attends funeral of the late emperor Wu Ren

After careful consideration of the delicate international situation that has emerged in the wake of the late emperor's passing, the following decisions were announced by Grand Master Shi Yawen:

1) The funeral, which occurred 8 days after the passing of the emperor, was conducted as a private religious ceremony open to the immediate and extended family. G.M. Shi also attended along with select dignitaries.

2) No successor will be named until a formal debate before the National Assembly.

3) G.M. Shi will propose both rejecting the Dranlandish claims on the Yingdalan throne and permanently vacating the throne in favor of an elected Presidency.

Grand Master Shi Announces Push to Establish Fourth Republic

Image

Grand Master delivered a forceful address today before the National Assembly, declaring her intention to establish a Fourth Republic to succeed the short-lived monarchy of Wu Ren. In her remarks, she said:

A free people deserve to determine their own path. A free people deserve to see their principles of liberty, equality, and justice reflected in the institutions that claim to represent them. Years now have passed since Emperor Wu died without an heir and we successfully fought back the claims of the Dranlanders to protect our nation's sovereignty. The time has come for Yingdalans to stand up and set their own course. For that reason -- and that reason alone -- I stand before you today to declare my intention to establish a new Republic.

Establishing a Fourth Republic

Important Progress as Parties Craft Constitutional Compromise

Image
Party negotiators work late hours to iron out details of compromise

The Restorationists became the first major party to sign onto the Grand Master Shi’s bid to modernize Yingdala’s constitutional framework. A compromise was reached to retain the name “State of Yingdala (瑩大磖國)” and the core design framework of the national flag updated with colors harking back to the Third Republic in place of monarchist black.

Grand Master Shi is personally managing the negotiations with the Nationalists, and has staked her personal reputation on breakthrough in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Kang has submitted his resignation effective on the vote to inaugurate a new Cabinet. No word yet on what shape these negotiations have taken.
