Shah to Abdicate Amid National Party Funding Scandal
July 5, 4163

Princess Vajesta attending the wedding of her cousin, who she will now succeed

His Most High Majesty Samrad I has announced that he intends to abdicate following the emergence of information suggesting he donated significant amounts of money to the Aldegarian National Party. The Shah, who has fulfilled the role since his father's death in June 4161, confirmed rumours that he was considering taking the unprecedented decision of stepping down this morning. With no children to succeed him, his first cousin Vajesta will now become the first 'Shahbanu of Aldegar' in the nation's history- much to the frustration of many traditionalists.

Samrad's shady transactions, which could be a breach of the law, have caused a serious decline in public support for the office of Shah. Polling indicates that fewer people now believe the Shah(banu) should be the official head of state than at any time since the ascension of Shahnam I. Vajesta I, as she will soon be known, will have her work cut out for her if she is to repair this reputation. This may prove particularly difficult given that she never expected to be thrust into the role at all.

Additionally, the scandal could have serious consequences for the Aldegarian National Party. Farzin Shahbahram has called an emergency meeting of the party's leadership to discuss the immediate course of action. The ANP have struggled to recover their early surge in support with voters and have suffered successive election defeats to the National Democratic Union. Some commentators are suggesting that the party may be dissolved in the wake of this crisis. Whether this is the case, only time will tell.

National Party Prepared to Contest Elections
May 19, 4145

Mustafa Edibam, who has been chosen to lead the Aldegarian National Party

Nearly a century since scandal forced it to be dissolved, the Aldegarian National Party (ANP) has re-entered the political arena in Aldegar. Last week, Shahnam (ruler of the royal House of Pesuna) confirmed that he had acquired the rights to the forming ruling party which was wound up shortly before his grandmother was illegally overthrown by republican usurpers. Furthermore, he announced that he would be settling the outstanding issues which have prevented the ANP from re-organising in the past, such as a significant tax bill left unpaid, and would ensure the party was able to field a full set of candidates in the next legislative elections.

While Shahnam insisted that he would not be entering the political fray himself, it seems clear that the reborn National Party will remain a bastion of monarchism and traditionalism in Aldegar. In the short term, Mustafa Edibam has been appointed to lead the organisation. Edibam, a high-ranking member of the clergy, has been outspoken in his criticism of society in contemporary Aldegar, referring to the nation as 'morally bankrupt' and 'run by buffoons, morons and little children who don't understand our history or tradition'. Highlighting the rejection of the Shahist ideology in the country, he told journalists that a talented leader was needed to restore pride and stability.

In spite of their decision to put forward a full slate of candidates for election to the Assembly, the party has stated they won't be putting forward a candidate in the Head of State election. Instead, they will submit a blank ticket to protest the existence of a directly elected leader and to indicate support for a monarchical government. Shahnam was optimistic about the chances of his new political project, saying that 'people in this country want change but nobody will stand up and give it to them; we want to change that and show them that a powerful Aldegar is possible'. Questions have been raised about his ability to bankroll the National Party with some suggesting that foreign monarchies may be involved, seeking international allies. Shahnam offered no comment when asked.

Government to Improve Efficiency of Aldegar Canal
September 5, 4145

Image
Initial work on improving the canal is already underway

Following snap elections last month in which the newly reformed Aldegarian National Party (ANP) won a comfortable twenty seat majority and were successful with a 'blank ticket' in the election for the head of state, a new proposal to modernise the Aldegar canal with the support of foreign capital has been brought forward. Announced by incoming Infrastructure and Transport Minister Shahvar Aspar and party leader Mustafa Edibam, it proposes to create a 'special provision' within the tolling structure for the canal which would shave two thirds off a vessel's costs. In order to access the provision, a firm or national government must contribute a certain amount of money to the government's plans for renovation, though.

Mr Aspar informed the legislature that the Aldegarian government would only be contributing 355 million ACR towards the project, expected to be completed within the next twelve to fifteen years, and would seek the remainder of the money from outside investors and foreign administrations. Potential investors include the Istalian government, who have been prevented from introducing a blockade upon the island nation of Vorona due to the actions of Kanjor in preventing access to their waters. Easy passage through the canal could significantly reduce the costs of their mission.

Additionally, the National Party have proposed changes to the taxation and spending plans in place. Significant increases in the level of taxation, particularly for the wealthy with the top rate rising to 75 per cent, will be used to reduce the budget deficit currently being run as well as to account for the cost of the canal's improvements. Due to the lack of a national leader, Edibam is expected to take charge of the cabinet as Internal Affairs Minister until such a time as reform is implemented. Restrictions imposed by the Aldegar Unity Party regime prevent the new government from making drastic changes initially but Edibam insists "we will return to the Aldegar of the Pesuna dynasty once again".

Pesuna Heiress Seeks Restoration For "Legitimate" Line
June 4306

Princess Shirana Vaez, the granddaughter of the last Pesuna ruler Shahnam II has formally laid her claim to the Aldegarian throne. The unwed Princess said her family had agreed to unite behind her given her experience as the unofficial head of the Vaez noble family and strong relations with other noble families in the Wuzurgan. This is despite the existence of several less prominent males in the family. Of illustrious heritage on both sides of her family, she's descended from Shahnam II through his daughter Princess Boran while her father Mirza Zarahustra Vaez was himself a descendant of the powerful Vaez political dynasties which dominated the Shahdom during the Tawanid dynasty.

Dipping into the Vaez wealth, Princess Shirana has restored the old Restoration Party which was last a dominant force in the 41st century. Her planned restoration is to be "peaceful" and she has vowed to seek it through validation by the electorate. Offering a return to traditional Aldegarian institution and abandonment of the socialist economic model, the Princess' normally incapacitating gender has been ignored by conservative forces in Aldegar who are rushing to rally behind her in the hope of ridding themselves of socialism.

Shirana Crowned Shahbanu
Palace Watchers: "Most Powerful Ruler In Centuries"

July 4308

Princess Shirana Vaez, the head of the Aldegarian royalist cause has been crowned Shahbanu of Aldegar. Shirana is only the second woman to ever occupy the Peacock Throne - the first was her ancestress Vajesta I Pesuna who reigned from 4163 to 4165. In a formal ceremony in at the Old Palace in Aldegaria, the 39 year old Shahbanu was crowned by the head of Wuzurgan (high nobility) There after she travelled to the Great Fire Temple where she was blessed by the Mobedan Mobad and senior Dasturs (high priests) This was followed by a visit to the legislative palace where she took an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution. Millions of Aldegarians rejoiced at the glittering spectacle, particularly in the conservative southern satrapies.

The end of the socialist elective monarchy is a massive triumph for the traditionalist royalists. Wary of a possible return to liberalism, the royalists have urged the new monarch to "reign only guided by her conscience and the advice of her own Ministers" As such, possibly the most conservative in six centuries (since the days of the Kingdom of Light) has been adopted. The Shahbanu was granted the power to appoint military officers, Satraps and other local government officials. Royalists have vowed a "Great Act" to further empower the monarch and the executive branch. The Shahbanu is to remain head of her Restoration Party which currently holds 77% of seats in the aptly renamed Consultative Council.

Following Oil&Gas Nationalisation, Pro-Government Rallies Grip Aldegar
January 4310

An estimated three million Aldegarians have poured out into the streets of the nation to express support for the recent decision to nationalise the various oil and gas companies in Aldegar. The rallies have been energetic but peaceful. A number of senior Ministers have addressed some of them leading to the charge that they are in fact a government organised spectacle, something the Government has denied.

Image
A large rally in the southern city of Motashannej

The nationalisation has led to the creation of one of the largest companies in Terra - Aldegas. It will now be responsible for all exploration and exploitation of the country's ample deposits particularly natural gas. The nationalisation was done carefully with not only compensation but the creation of a National Development Fund to receive 50% of the profits and direct them to developing the economy through soft loans to domestic companies and entrepreneurs. The law also allows the possible selling of a stake of up to 15% back into private ownership

The move was driven by the Shahbanu herself, who showing a certain populist pulse, demanded that her Ministers carry through with the plan. She dismissed her Court Minister Kurosh Mashaei as the former oil company executive opposed the plan even with adequate compensation for the affected companies. In his place, Morteza Rahimpour another oilman was appointed to see through the nationalisation process and creation of Aldegas.

Following all of this, the people streamed into the streets to praise the Shahbanu and her Ministers. The nationalised companies have never been popular and being largely of foreign ownership has not helped them. They were seen as profiting from Aldegar's natural resources and often stashing their profits in foreign banks. The people deeply appreciated the Shahbanu's forceful role in this affair and even republicans have expressed a positive view of her. The Shahbanu said that she would stay away from the direct line of politics but would intervene whenever the national interest was not being served by her Ministers. The reality is quite different. The Old Palace micromanages the work of the government and Ministers are little more than the enforcers of the monarch's will.

Palace Denies Rumours Of "Kazulian" Engagement

The Old Palace has denied rumours that the Shahbanu's niece Princess Pari is sent to get engaged to a Kazulian Prince in the coming day. Princess Pari, 21 is the daughter of the Shahbanu's brother and heir-presumptive Prince Shahnam and is on an extended internship in Kazulia at the Aldegarian Embassy. Such an engagement would be "highly improper" as a Palace spokesman pointed out, noting that "according to our national traditions and house law, daughters of the royal family can never marry foreign princes and can only marry within the family if the Xwarrah (royal glory) is to remain with the monarch." There has been no comment from the Kazulians or the Princess herself yet.
