Mwisintoto People's Party Collapses
- Largest party in the Legislative Assembly collapses
- Chairman of the Council of Ministers implicated in major corruption scandal
- New elections to be three way fight between MCNA, HDP, and AJP
Mwisintoto politics went down crashing and burning last night, as the popular Mwisintoto People's Party (MPP) deregistered following the arrest of its leader, and Head of State, Jon Ndiaye. Following accusations of corruption that had been made from the main Opposition party, the Hosian Democratic Party (HDP), the police raided the Chairman's home in the early hours of the morning on charges of electoral fraud, and accepting bribes from major mining companies.
Jon Ndiaye had held a monopoly on Ntoto politics since the resignation of his predecessor, Ousman Ngum. Beating off several other high-profile names in the MPP Leadership Contest, he was able to not only unite the party under a socially liberal platform, but also increase their majority in the State Assembly. He is highly praised for his reconciling with the AJP - much to the distaste of some of the Hosian faction of the party - and was a popular Chairman of the Council of Ministers until being embroiled in this scandal.
The arrest came following a parliamentary inquiry forced through after a large proportion of MPP politicians rebelled. The outcome implicated several members of the Cabinet and the Head of State of accepting bribes from a myriad of mining companies in return for favourable business conditions. In particular, it is thought the Star Mining Corporation is believed to have offered in excess of 300,000 LPD (Luthorian Pounds - the defacto currency in Ntoto) to the Chairman of the Council of Ministers in order to guarantee a personal meeting between the Chairman and the Chief Executive.
As a result of the majority of its leaders being arrested, the MPP announced shortly afterwards its intention to shut its doors. Musa Ndele, the party's spokesperson told the Correspondence: "With the majority of our leadership implicated unfairly for corruption, we are naturally put in a difficult position. The speed in which actions would have to be taken in order to find a new Cabinet and a new Chairman at such short notice is impossibly fast. It is therefore necessary to deregister and allow democracy to choose a new Legislative Assembly."
However, a phoenix may yet rise from the ashes of the MPP. Already, a group of the Centre Faction of the MPP have come together with the Nationalist Faction of the MPP, and have registered the Mwisintoto Centrist and Nationalist Alliance (MCNA) for the next elections. This new party, led by the two faction leaders, Oumil Sarr and which focuses on populist policies, is set to see a shift to the right, holding a pro-Kintoto stance, and being opposed to the Asli minority in Ntoto. How well it will do is unknown. The HDP and the Ahmadi Justice Party (AJP) are set to make historic gains that could end the hegemony that the MPP had, and open Mwisintoto politics to a multi-party system.
Ndiaye, although in prison, released a statement in which he apologised for his "unprofessional" actions, although denied he had broken the law. He also showed his disappointment at the collapse of the party he has been a part of for his whole life. He called upon voters to back the new MCNA in order to maintain stability and order in Ntoto.
"Sometimes the people you think you hate actually turn out to be alright."
