BREAKING Ariadna Pragmata elected as new Supreme Judge of Selucia
The candidate has received the unanimous support of all 6 judges

Image
New Superior Iudicum Ariadna Pragmata, receiving in 4375 the Selucian Prize for Services to the Nation

Members of the Selucian Court have spoken and chosen its new member. After the failure of Genzius Tuccius, the candidate proposed by Factio Republicana and who received the support of Denique Vidimus Lucem and In Marea-Civis Sinistram, but was opposed by Legionem Nationis, Article 99 was activated and the duty was passed to the members of the highest judicial institution to choose their newest member. The event, broadcasted by national TV, is a major event each time a new judge is selected, and usually gets the highest ratings for a non-sport programme in the nation.

It has not been an easy decision, and as you know we hate to be in the public eye, but we have finally made our decision. Iudex Pragmata is a very good choice, and she has received the support from all the members of the Court. She now has to be accepted by the Caesar of Selucia, but it is a mere formalism and she will join us soon.
has said Megadorus Pertinax, Magni Iudex.

When asked about why they did not choose Genzius Tuccius as their new member, he answered:

While we do not think Mr. Tuccius is a bad candidate at all, we have to understand that the Senate has voted, and it has voted against it. Whether we like it or not, rules are stablished about how our members are chosen and unless they are changed, he was out of the run. Therefore, what image would we give if we decided to choose a member that was previously rejected by the chamber that represents the Selucian people? If Mr. Tuccius is offered sometime soon again the option to join us and he passes the Senate, or if another candidate is refused by the Senate, we would strongly consider him to join us.

The new judge, Ariadna Pragmata, is a well-known judge in her region of origin, Oriensos. Born in 4328, she advanced quickly in the judicial system, thanks to her high skills and her love for her duties. Those who know her say that she's a very serious person, with a special sense of humour, and who takes each case very seriously and focused. A follower of the broken window theory, she is classified as a progressist, however as soon as she was announced, she was said to be the possible only conservative vote sometimes in the court.

The debate fractures In Marea-Civis Sinistram
After the second elections in a row defeated by coalition partners, IMCS looks for new ways

ImageImageImage
From left to right: Caelia Isatis, Atia Vinicia Gryllus and Philto Labrax Tyranus, leaders of the three factions in the party

Following the high expectations placed by the ruling party on the outcome of the elections, the result of the latter, where IMCS climbed to the third position but was far from the winner Legionem Nationis, and its government partner Denique Vidimus Lucem, two of the three main currents within the party have begun to raise their voices asking for changes, being represented in the figures of their leaders.

While Caelia Isatis, defender of the Celerian current (the ideology proposed by the former leader of the party and ancestor of Argos Loukas, Aelius Celer) has put on the table all that the party has offered to the citizens as guarantor of stability and she has simply advocated a change in the way they communicate with citizens, recognizing that the party "has lost the link it had with the street", the other two factions of the party have demanded more effective changes, but in opposite directions.

Atia Vinicia Gryllus, a wel-known former Selucian actress, specially for her role in "The Missed", is the leader of the Ivmarian faction, which asks the party to return to the origins and philosophy on which it was founded, in continuous contact with the popular and working classes to defend the interests of the majority, always from the vision of the left, to achieve the social justice that promoted the founding of the party almost 300 years ago. They ask the secretary of the party and current Caesar de Selucia, Argos Loukas, to take real measures so as not to allow the party to sink further and regain the trust of the people, for which they ask him not to allow the manipulation by the words of Legionem Nationis and the supposed progressivism of Factio Republicana. four out of five of the current regional leaders of the party allegedly belong to this faction, with Artamo Carus, Passilus Volantus and Artemisia Oltra already recognized it and Fedora Kalla being supposed to belong too.

The last faction, represented by the figure of Philto Labrax Tyranus, is the branch where the founder of Factio Republicana belonged. The most conservative of the three, is now asking the party to leave their more radical progressive positions to get a little closer to the center-right citizens, in order to get the vote of this part of the population, mostly pensioners, who currently vote for Partis Imperialis or Factio Republicana. Their leader admits that the party's continuous positioning against many proposals of Factio Republicana and some of Legionem Nationis are not shared by him, and that the party should "understand that not all citizens are progressist".

With Argos Loukas announcing his near retirement (he is currently aged 61 and has been Secretary of the party for more than 30 years, and Caesar for more than 15), it is more than probable that these three candidates will present a fierce battle, and will sweep away any other candidate trying to reach common understanding.

Selucian Government announces its standard-bearer for the Valruzian Olympic Games
Virginia Caspatia will be awarded the honour

Image

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Selucia, Chrysa Contou, has announced today that Virginia Caspatia, the most prolific Selucian woman in tennis, has been awarded the honour of becoming the standard bearer for her nation.

She contacted the government asking for that honour and we did not think it for a while. She is a good representation of what our nation means: spirit of overcoming, charisma, pride, companionship, respect, tolerance... we could not think of a better representative, and we are excited to be there

In Marea-Civis Sinistram members have spoken
By choosing Atia Vinicia Gryllus, the most leftist wing has won

Image
The new Secretary of IMCS, Atia Vinicia Gryllus

Argos Loukas renounced last month to his position as General Secretary of In Marea-Civis Sinistram following the conformation of the new cabinet made up by Legionem Nationis, Factio Republicana and Partis Imperialis and therefore losing his position as Caesar of Selucia.

Last election results, with Denique Vidimus Lucem now definitely taking the lead of the left in Selucia, I almost had my decision done. But now, after the new cabinet has been approved, I can definitely retire. It is clear that my job is no longer needed, as my ideas are no longer liked by Selucian voters. Now, after Legionem Nationis has been allowed in the government and the right has taken control of the nation, I think is time for others to take my job and do their best to show what our party really means for this nation: stability, security, equality, peace, and prosperity.

As supposed some months ago, the three candidates that attempted to become the new Secretaries of the party were the leaders of the three factions within the party: Caelia Isatis, Atia Vinicia Gryllus and Philto Labrax Tyranus.

All the affiliates of the party were called to vote, and the results of the first round were not a big surprise for anyone: Mrs. Isatis and Mrs. Gryllus came in a close race (the first obtaining 46% and the second 44%), with Mr. Tyranus obtaining only a small 10%. It was clear that the ideology of Mr. Tyranus, closer to conservative ideas and sometimes close to Legionem Nationis or Factio Republicana ideology was not the majority of the IMCS members, but now it has been proved that they do not want to come any closer to the right. The second round, however, surprised many people as Mrs. Gryllus became the actual winner obtaining a whooping 73% of the votes, proving that in contrast with Mrs. Isatis, follower of the ideas of Aelius Celer and Argos Loukas, the IMCS really were looking for change, and chose the most leftist candidate.

Things really have to change. Our party has been in this nation for many years, yet we have failed in keeping in contact with the society, and this has punished us. We have to get back that spirit, the original one, and prove Selucians that IMCS is the best option they can choose.

"FOCUS INWARD"
LN Pushes for Isolationism
Image
Consul Varro ran for election in large part on promises of overhauling Selucian foreign policy

Following Martinus Varro of the Legionem Nationis achieving election to Consul and the successful negotiation of a right-wing coalition government that gave LN, among other positions, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the party is now using its new found political capital to push for a more isolationist foreign policy direction, already bringing a motion to the Senate asking for an official withdrawal from the Majatran Alliance and Common Economic Area (MACEA). The party has been continuing to aggressively push the slogan "Focus Inward" since it was first used in the national elections two years ago.

Consul Varro has largely seemed to remain in control of the party despite giving up his position of Coetus Dux in order to ascend to the consulship. Dux Atrenius, while fulfilling the day to day roles and responsibilities of the position, has not been seen as the face of any major pieces of legislation or been involved in any public events such as would be expected of the official leader of the largest party in the Senate. Indeed, when considered with Consul Varro's unusual amount of direct involvements and addresses to the Senate, many speculate that Atrenius may just be a placeholder and unable to exert any power for himself. The Legionem Nationis has dismissed such claims.

Whatever the extent of the Consul's control of the party, he has forcefully pushed his party members and the Senate as a whole to adopt a more nationalistic mindset that rejects notions of international cooperation or involvement. Addressing a crowd in Constantium, he outlined his vision for the future of Selucian foreign affairs:
The left has sold out the people of Selucia. The average Selucian man has consistently been overlooked by our own government to aid those in places like Deltaria or Jakania, no matter how much that man needs his government's help. We cannot continue to bend over and submit to these international associations that fight for "the common good". We need to fight for our own good. Selucia will become the shining city on a hill not through giving handouts to every other nation, but by focusing our own resources on ourselves and turning away from the rest of Terra for the good of our own nation.

The proposal to withdraw from MACEA and indeed these larger propositions of abandoning an internationally active role in foreign affairs are expected to experience significant pushback in the Senate, and it remains unclear if the LN's political interests in this area will be able to become practical reality.

Divided Government
Right-wing coalition not welcome by all participants

Image
Republican co-chairmen Postumus Oppidius Hortensius and Decimus Nasennius Valens taking their oath of office in the new cabinet with the other Republican ministers

August 4380 - At the beginning of this year the three conservative parties in the Republic, viz. the Nationalist Legion, the Republican Party, and the Imperial Party, overcame their significant differences to form a right-wing coalition, led by Republican Party co-founder and co-chairman Postumus Oppidius Hortensius, to replace the former center-left coalition under In Marea. However the new coalition is not free from the tensions and rifts that affected the previous government. In the last election the Republican Party endorsed the Nationalist candidate, securing Consulship for Varro but alienating voters from both parties, continuing the Republicans' eroding popular support. For this reason the Republican Party was initially reluctant to form a coalition with the Nationalists, abstaining from a previous proposal for a similar executive arrangement. But since the Republicans had become increasingly dissatisfied with their former coalition partners on the left they were ultimately forced by circumstances to embrace the Nationalists and the Imperial Party as governing partners. In spite of this marriage of convenience, many difficulties lie ahead for the new coalition, caused by differences that can't be bridged by mere joint participation in government. Religion is perhaps the strongest cleavage between the three parties. The Nationalist Legion has not hidden its desire to strengthen the Aurorian Patriarchal Church and increase its role in the Republic, a proposal strongly disliked by both the Pagan-based Imperial Party and the more ecumenically-minded Republican Party. But a recent legislative proposal aims to bridge that gap by granting the status of "national religion" to Religio Seluciana, and it has received the support of all three coalition parties. In spite of this, there is more that divides the three governing parties, as the Republicans continue introducing economic legislation far to the left of even In Marea and as the Imperial Party continues to resent the radical republicanism of the Republicans. Only time will tell whether the new coalition will be more stable and successful than the previous one .

Society "shocked" of Selucian results at the 4380 Olympics
Citizens did not expect such a low performance, specially at their national sport.

Image
Selucian citizens watching the Olympics in the streets

As if it were a bad dream, the citizens of Selucia have risen today trying to overcome the blow that has resulted from the final result of the 4380 Olympics held in Nowogard, Valruzia. The final result, of only 3 golds (badminton, women's singles; cycling, women's cross-country; women's 50m freestyle), 3 silvers (men athletics, 10,000m; swimming, men 200m freestyle; swimming, men's 10km open water) and 2 bronzes (men's field hockey; synchronized swimming, team), has shaken the country, known for its annual games where participants train with conscience and with extreme hardness. Despite the fact that the flag-bearer of Selucia this year, the famous badminton champion Virginia Caspatia, has revalidated her title and maintained the gold medal, the small amount of medals achieved compared to the number of athletes sent, but especially the sounded failure of the country in the national sport for centuries, swimming, with barely 1 gold and 2 silver medals among all possible competitions, has meant a heavy blow for the maritime nation, which was looking forward for these games.

I can't actually believe the results. I'm proud of all the golden medals our women have achieved, but I was certainly not expecting such a low result at all, ending at the bottom of the table.
said Turbina Mania, a 65-year old saleswoman. Selucians are known for their national pride, specially when it comes to sports.

The manager of the Selucian Swimming Federation, Pulvio Archeo, has already announced his resignation, and resignations for more national managers are expected in the next hours, as anger keeps growing among the nation. We will keep you updated.

BREAKING IUVIM to abstain from campaigning in Selexit issue

Image
The Leader of the IUVIM, Atria Stichus, announcing the decision

They are the powerful youths of the historical party of the left in Selucia. And today, the IUVIM have announced their intention not to campaign either for or against the phenomenon known as "Selexit": the departure of Selucia from the Majatran Union.

The IUVIM defended some time ago the departure of the country from the international union, in the context of its inactivity and its little defense of democracy and the fundamental rights of minorities in some countries that were part of it, although now they have announced that "They can not put themselves on the same side as Legionem Nationis" because "not everything is valid in politics".

The IUVIM have long advocated the departure of our nation from an alliance that has long been unable to live up to the circumstances, especially in facing a tough hand with the lack of democracy in Deltaria and the abuse of some minorities in some countries that integrated it, therefore obstructing the possibilites of Selucia to give help on its own. However, the association has managed to overcome it and now tries to do a better job.
has said its leader, Atria Stichus, in a press conference in the headquarters of the federation.

Although the alliance needs deep changes to be carried out so that it is really at the service of the citizens of Majatra and not of the political elites that make it up, the IUVIM can not campaign for Selexit in the current conditions that our country is experiencing, and based on the reasons why this referendum is being motivated on the future of our country in the alliance.

The proposal of the IUVIM to abandon the alliance was based on its lack of real possibilities to manage an international crisis where basic human rights were violated, while the current proposal on which the referendum is based is pure revanchism and the most stale nationalism. As it can be seen in the proposal, made of course by Legionem Nationis, the arguments used revolve around the lack of empathy for the rest of humanity, religion and the rejection of everything that does not come from our own country, becoming one more example of the xenophobia and extreme conservatism of the government that we have now.

However, the final decision seems to be made, and the referendum will be held. And that is why the IUVIM see it necessary to make public their position, as defending figures once of Selexit. And our position is clear: we can not campaign in this referendum. We can not and we do not want. We can not because we can not agree in the least with Legionem Nationis and in the argumentation it uses, based solely on the exaltation of the purest conservative and discriminatory nationalism, on xenophobic superiority, and therefore we can not support a campaign of Selexit that is based on these pillars, because it is not what we seek for our country. But in the same way, we can not support a campaign in favor of permanence, because this would make everything remain the same. In this way, and although surely our main party - In Marea-Civis Sinistram - is going to campaign for permanence, we, as the youth branch and completely independently, can only ask people to vote with their heads, really thinking what are they doing when voting.

Some hours later, the Leader of In Marea-Civis Sinistram and former Consul of the nation, Zelotes Siskos, has made an appearancce to clarify the position of In Marea-Civis Sinistram, stating that, even though they understand the position of their juvenil branch, they do not share it, and that effectivily the party will campaign for the "No" in Selexit.

Huge victory for Legionem Nationis; parliament fragmented
Results from last Selucian elections make almost impossible a government alternative to Legionem Nationis-Factio Republicana, although they lost their bulk majority

Image
Atia Vinicia Gryllus, Secretary of In Marea-Civis Sinistram, after tonight's election results

The result of the last elections held in Selucia has led the country to a period of political uncertainty, after the victory of Legionem Nationis with a little more than 35% of the seats, but the fall of its government partners, Factio Republicana and Partis Imperialis, to the last two positions in the parliament (8 and 9% of the seats respectively), eliminates at a stroke the vast majority that they had in the Senate (435 seats) and replaces it with a majority of 393 seats, enough to maintain the government standing but that will require more cohesion among the members of the tripartite government to carry out certain reforms.

The most benefited of these elections have been the new parties that have broken into the Senate, getting EPHS (Est Pars Humanitatis et Socialismus) 111 seats and PFO (Populi Factio Optimatium) 87 seats. After them, IMCS gives up a position and finishes in fourth place with 80 seats, confirming the poor results that the party has been obtaining for almost two decades, although it manages to stay afloat, while Denique Vidimus Lucem collapses from the second to the fifth position with 79 seats. These results mean that there is no viable alternative for a fully progressive government in the nation, and that the government of Legionem Nationis seems to be consolidated.

The general secretary of IMCS, Atia Vinicia Gryllus, has appeared immediately after knowing the general and regional results (where IMCS has finished last in Oriensos and Cor Patriae and penultimate in its traditional bastion, Insularia). Sensitively affected by the result, she has proceeded to announce that, from that very moment, the party starts working towards the next elections.

There is no doubt that the results obtained by our party are not as expected, and it is important to make self-criticism about what has happened. Although Factio Republicana and Partis Imperialis have fallen to the last positions, the strength of Legionem Nationis is still valid, and it is something that can not be ignored.

Our party tool too many elections without giving the best of itself, attending passively to the political scene of the nation, which has motivated the emergence of new movements that have occupied a political space where they were not originally necessary because In Marea-Civis Sinistram was already on it. But it stopped being, and stopped being at the service of those citizens. We have to amend that error. And that starts from now.

The party must be renewed, both nationally and regionally. We must go back to the street, to talk to people, to our citizens, and see what they need. We can not fail, and continue to leave the country in the hands of Legionem Nationis. It's time to move on to the attack policy.

Also, now we can see what happens when you talk before time. When Legionem Nationis accused In Marea of being Head of Government despite its election result. Now, we have a Head of Government from the last party in this elections, supported by Legionem Nationis. Is not it ironic?

Olympic Debate
Selucia considers banning Olympics

Image
More than twenty years on the Saint Acter Stadium has become a symbol of Olympic waste for many

May 4383 - Selucia has long been known as a nation that loves sports, which is why it was hardly surprising when the Selucian city of Victoria was selected to host the Olympic Games in 4360. So then why is the Selucian Senate now considering withdrawing Selucia from all major international competitions? The Nasennian Law on the Olympics currently on the Senate floor aims to withdraw Selucia's official membership in the Terran Olympic Association, the Majatran Championship Cup, the United Chariot League, and the International Chess Association, four of the larges sports organizations in the world. The bill was introduced shortly before the 4382 Referendum to withdraw Selucian membership from the Majatran Alliance resulted in a victory for the "Leave" camp and withdrawal procedures were initiated, leading many to believe that this is a mere result of the isolationist reflexes of the governing coalition. But many other Selucians believe there is something to the arguments brought by Republican MInister D. Nasennius Valens, that the Olympics are wasteful, ruled by corporate interests, promote nationalism, and lead to the construction of white elephants. Grassroots opposition to the Victoria Olympics was one of the several movements that in 4367 converged to form the Republican Party, so now the Republicans are aiming to please one of their core constituencies.

Image
Anti-Olympic protest in 4359, before the Victoria Olympics

But are the Olympics and other sporting events really that bad? Professor Paulus Mummius, a professor of Selucian history and the history of sport at the University of Assedo, where he has been teaching since 4341, says "Yes".

When you look at the history of the Olympics, you see that they emerged in a very specific international context, when the world was dominated by the Rothingren-Traugott monarchy and the Luthori-Hulstrian hegemony. Two trends were common at the time, namely a fascination with all things ancient, and grand displays of imperial power, and the Olympics represent the convergence of these two trends. One must not forget that the first three Olympic Games, and indeed the only games until Victoria, were organized by the Luthori-Hulstrian hegemony and its colony in Beiteynu. The games were started by Luthori to promote her newfound hegemony, and the second games organized by Hulstria served as a prelude to the Luthori-Hulstrian invasion of Sekowo the next year. One of the uglier legacies of the first Games is the embedded racism involved in the promotion of Artanian sports over all other sporting traditions, since the Luthorians sought to prove their supperiority over indigenous peoples by focusing exclusively on northern sports that other peoples had little interest or experience in. In the centuries after the first games more and more of these sports have been adopted by countries where they have no tradition or popular following. And when the Victoria Olympics were organized, all sports included were Artanian sports.

Professor Mummius also points to other sports as being dominated by nationalistic self-promotion, the most infamous example being the execution of the Deltarian female soccer team after it failed to win the World Cup in the 38th century. The recent doping and nepotism allegations that emerged in the aftermath of the 4380 Olympics are seen by professor Mummius as another example of the negative problems facing large international sporting events.

Image
Professor Paulus Mummius, teaching history of sport at Assedo University, supports the government's proposal

But not everyone agrees with Professor Mummius. Seeing that the proposal to withdraw from international sporting events was introduced by a government whose largest party ran on an officially isolationist platform, it is hard not to find a connection between the "Focus Inward" and Selexit campaigns and Selucia's possible withdrawal from the Olympics. But one thing is clear: for all their glamor and prestige, not everyone loves the Olympics, not even in Selucia.
