Jean-de-Dieu riots as Hewson sweeps Presidential election

Image

The largely Canrillaise city of Jean-de-Dieu experienced a night of violence yesterday evening after the news broke that Gregory Hewson had narrowly won the Presidential election. Hewson is a controversial and divisive figure in Mordusian politics, who has a history of anti-Canrillaise and other anti-minority comments and behaviour.

Social media has been flooded with messages and photographs alleging brutality and general heavy-handedness on the part of the police. Complaints are also emerging that the city's police force has an anti-Canrillaise bias and that Canrillaise officers are severely under-represented in the most senior positions.

Liberal Union leader Henri Bachelot called Hewson's election "a national embarrassment and a calamity", but insisted "Terra has got to know that this man does not represent who we are and what we are about as a country". He also urged Mordusia's political leaders "to work together to ensure the extremists are kept out of government in the new parliamentary session".

Liberal MP calls for monarchy debate

In the aftermath of controversial Mordusia First leader Gregory Hewson's election as President and the death of Empress Sarah IV, newly-elected Liberal MP Josephine Braithwaite has called "for a real national debate looking at the options in terms of restoring a constitutional monarchy in Mordusia, in some shape or form". She also expressed her "personal opinion" that Empress Sarah IV's successor, Alexander, "could be just the very person we need". She warned that "electing our symbolic Head of State by popular vote will always risk disasters like Hewson" and that "constitutional monarchy is much more stable".

As a royalist, Braithwaite is in a minority in her party, which is generally staunchly republican.

HEWSON WINS PRESIDENCY, MAKES INAUGURAL SPEECH

Image
John Hewson delivering his Inaugural Speech

Today, Gregory Hewson; Former Treasurer and Current Minister of Trade and Industry has one the Presidential Elections; sweeping Mordusia First! to victory in every state except for Adubura. Upon his inauguration, he made a speech talking about national progress and moving forward to reach victory;

Democracy has spoken; and it says “We wan’t Gregory Hewson to rule our country and move us forward!” I cannot begin to express the pride and honour I have in being elected as your leader and I guarantee you that Mordusia will become a dominant force in Terra! Mordusia has been declining in the past decades and entered a recession:

The problem is we have not had leaders with the foresight or the intestinal fortitude to cast aside political correctness. They have failed to discard old treaties and agreements that are not in our best interest and have signed new ones giving away our sovereignty, rights, jobs and democracy. Their push for globalisation, economic rationalism, free trade and ethnic diversity has seen our country's decline.

This is due to foreign takeover of our land and assets, out-of-control debt, failing infrastructure, high unemployment or underemployment and the destruction of our farming sector. Indiscriminate immigration and aggressive multiculturalism have caused crime to escalate and trust and social cohesion to decline. Too many Mordusians are afraid to walk alone at night in their neighbourhoods because there are too many Ahmadists and Communists threatening our way of life, along with some Canrillaise. However, that will stop under President Hewson, I assure you it will.

He was to continue his speech however dangerous riots threatened his security and President Hewson was rushed to safety immediately.

IF YOU DON’T JUMP FOR HEWSON’S MORDUSIA, YOU DON’T JUMP AT ALL!

Chariman of the Mordusian Olympic Commitee comments on Mordusian athletes

Recently, Jean-Baptiste Duchemin and two other Mordusian athletes have stated that they would not be competing in the Olympics under the Mordusian Flag due to the people in Government. However, Chairman Frederick Hunt of the Mordusian Olympic Committee has warned them that if they refuse to compete for Mordusia; there will be consequences:

I have recently spoken with the President and the Ministers of Foreign as well as Internal Affairs about your plans to compete under another banner than Mordusian and I have to warn you that doing so will be detrimental to your career. If you don’t compete for Mordusia, the President is threatening to ban you from competing entirely. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will deny your visas to exit the country and you will remain in Mordusia unless you compete under our banner. I personally do not agree with this move however, if you do not wish to end your careers, I suggest you meet their demands.

PAISLEY CALLS FOR CLOSER COOPERATION BETWEEN SOCIALISTS, LIBERALS, AND GREENS

Jonathan Paisley, the leader of the Socialist Party has called for closer cooperation between his party, the Liberal Union, and the Green Left, with the goals of forming a so-called rainbow coalition.

When a student asked him about working with the Liberals and the Greens in a tactical alliance to beat Mordusia First, he answered:

"It might look like an odd bunch, but if the Socialist Party, the Liberal Union, and the Green Left band together, I think we could have a shot at winning" he said at a Q&A in the Federal University of Rechtenburg "Hosian parties have dominated Mordusian politics for centuries. I think Mordusia deserves real change"

He was greeted with applause from the FUR Socialist Party Campus Club, which has been supportive of Paisley's move to the left.

"He represents a return to the politics of Plyd and Pacheco" says FUR SP Club head, Neil Harmon "The third way policies that we have embraced has alienated our traditional base, and driven them into the arms of the hard right, as we can see by the victory of Hewson"

Aside from this, he was asked various questions about the state of the economy, environmental protection, and global affairs

PRESIDENT HEWSON OUT UNDER HOUSE ARREST PRIOR TO EXILE CONFIRMATION

Image
President Gregory Hewson has been placed under House Arrest, prior to being exiled tomorrow

Recently, The Federal Police discovered the President’s plans to wipe out the Canrillaise population, along with Ahmadists, Communists and other minorities as part of a mass extermination. Hewson will be exiled to Aldegār under the orders of the Prime Minister and the offices of Mordusia First be further investigated in case of further details. 60% of Mordusia First Parliamentarians have been arrested and the party has been dissolved. Mordusia is finally free of Hewson’s reign and his plans were further backed by his comments as he was out under house arrest;

You cannot do this to me, I was elected democratically as leader of Mordusia! Sure, I was going to kill a couple Canrillaise but it was for the good of this country!” yells Hewson as he is dragged from Grumsworth Manor, the Presidential Residency. “The Canrillaise need to be punished for destroying our country, along with the Ahmadists and the Communists!”

Many cheered as he was taken away whilst others rioted in support of the President but many are asking this question; “Will we still hear of Hewson in the future?”

SOCIALISTS GEAR UP FOR SNAP ELECTION

After it was discovered that former President Hewson was plotting to wipe out the Canrillaise population and his party, Mordusia First, was forcibly dissolved, new elections are set to be held in just 3 weeks. Early polls have been promising for the Socialists, which show them leading among young voters and the Canrillaise.

They have started a large canvassing campaign geared at soft Canrillaise nationalists, young people, and working-class voters and are targeting urban areas like Port Alexander, Rechtenburg, and Bayonne to snatch support away from the Green Left. Polls already show that the Green Left's control over the Bayonne Mayorship is unstable, with their candidate, Marissa Brown, polling 5 points behind the Socialist candidate, Julian Barley.

"There is an unstoppable wave of anger at the right" said Laura Mason on Channel 3, "and the Socialists look likely to benefit. The Hosian Democrats have just three weeks to stop complete electoral collapse, never mind win the election"

More to come on the election

ELIJAH SPRING, FIRST MINISTER OF HOSAMIA, CALLS ON PAISLEY TO STEP DOWN AFTER HUMILIATING ELECTION DEFEAT

Elijah Spring, First Minister of Hosamia, has said that Jonathan Paisley should resign after the SP's landslide defeat.
“We were leading by nearly 15 points in the polls, but with Paisley's incompetent and incoherent campaign, we fell down to 9% of the vote! If he had any dignity, he would step down”.

Paisley remains defiant, saying that he will “continue to fight for progressive policies” and called out the “Rechtenburg elite who have been trying to undermine my leadership since day one”.

More to come on the leadership battle.

Samantha Jenkins (First Minister of Adubura, Director of Women at Work) - 16.98%
Darwin Morrison (Leader of the International Socialist Platform) - 8.79%

This election was a clear victory for the moderate wing of the SP, with Elijah Spring leading by 11 points on 42.7%, and Paisley languishing at 31.6%. Samantha Jenkins has conceded defeat and has declared her endorsement of Spring for Socialist leader. Darwin Morrison has declined to endorse either Paisley or Spring, declaring that he would leave a blank ballot in protest of "the neoliberal agenda both of these men pursue"

Nationalists protest removal of "Little St. Simon" shrine

Image
Shrine of "Little St. Simon"

Up to 300 demonstrators from the far-right National Movement arrived outside Meech Cathedral yesterday to protest against a decision by the Aurorian Patriarchal Church to remove a medieval shrine dedicated to Simon Hedgewick, a 10 year old Hosian boy alleged at the time to have been burned to death by a group of 9 Aldegarian men as part of an elaborate Yazdi human sacrifice fire ritual.

The Church has long acknowledged that that the claim the boy was killed by Yazdis is a myth, invented at the time to whip up prejudice against non-Hosians. Over the years, Aurorian bishops have issued a number of apologies for the incident, which saw 9 innocent Aldegarian Yazdis judicially executed on conviction of murder, and many more lynched, attacked and harassed by mobs.

Although Simon was never officially recognised as a saint, he became popularly regarded as one and was known as "Little St. Simon". A shrine was built to him at Meech Cathedral soon after his death, attracting massive flocks of pilgrims, to the huge financial benefit of the Cathedral authorities.

For centuries there have been calls for the shrine to be removed, on the grounds of its insensitivity to Aldegarians and Yazdis. Others, though, have made the case that it is a part of the Cathedral's history, and that to remove it now after all of this time would be wrong.

About 70 years ago, the two sides seemed to have reached a compromise, whereby the shrine would remain, but a plaque would be placed alongside it explaining the traditional story surrounding Simon's death is untrue and expressing "the Church's deep sorrow at this shameful tragedy" and "the Church's repentance for the terrible misrepresentation and persecution of Yazdis".

Over the last few years, the controversy has ignited again, largely due to the arrival at the Cathedral of groups of National Movement activists demanding "Justice 4 Little St. Simon". The Movement's chairman, Frederick Manningham-Buller, has loudly insisted on multiple occasions that "Yazdism is a savage, violent and evil religion", that "Yazdis target Hosian children because that's what their religion tells them to do", that "Yazdis like to start fires", that "Little Simon was the innocent victim of Yazdis" and that "the truth is being suppressed as part of a global liberal elite establishment plot to try to make us feel guilty for being Mordusians and Hosians".

During the last 6 months particularly, there has been a tense stand-off between the Cathedral authorities and the National Movement activists- or "pilgrims" as they prefer to call themselves. This has generated lively televised scenes of rowdy activists being variously escorted from the premises or refused access to the Cathedral at the entrance.

Now the situation has reached a point where Archbishop Matthew Boulanger has ordered the shrine to be removed from the Cathedral entirely. By an arrangement with the Sammodra Heritage Society, it will be loaned to the Sammodra Heritage Museum in Port Alexander.

The National Movement claims nearly 50,000 members nationally, although critics suggest this figure is highly exaggerated. What is undisputed is that the organisation has seen a surge in support, public interest and media coverage in the years since the once-formidable Mordusia First party folded.

The group's leaders fiercely deny being connected to Mordusia First, however. "Yeah, it's true some of the Mordusia First people have come over to us," Manningham-Buller explained recently, "but we're not Mordusia First Mark Two - we're something very different, much more new and radical". Pressed to explain what he meant, he claimed Mordusia First "sold out to the Global Liberal Elite" and that "the so-called Hewson plot to murder the Canrillaise was pure invention, part of a broader conspiracy to try to demonise Mordusian nationalists and destroy our pride and identity".

Thus far the Movement has steered away from electoral politics, although rumours abound that it may start fielding candidates for selected seats in the near future.

Manningham-Buller accuses Valruzia of "fixing the Olympics"

Image
Frederick Manningham-Buller, shouting racist abuse at the Valruzian water polo team

The chairman of the newly-formed and fast-growing far-right National Movement, Frederick Manningham-Buller, has accused Valruzia of "fixing the 4380 Olympics" by "giving drugs to their athletes, to give them an unfair advantage" whilst "doping their opponents with sedatives, to make them perform less well".

Manningham-Buller briefly came to global attention last year during an Olympic water polo match between Valruzia and Mordusia, when he was thrown out of the audience for shouting racist abuse at the Valruzian players. Later in the day, he was banned from attending the Olympics for life - a ban which he is in the process of appealing against.

"Banning me from the Olympics is all part of this conspiracy," he told reporters last night. "They know I know that those games were fixed, so they want to silence and discredit me. But I won't give in. I will carry on speaking the truth, because the public deserve to know the truth. The Olympics is a complete sham, and a lot of highly-placed, well-connected people are getting incredibly rich by placing bets on athletes who they know in advance can't lose."

"I want to give the Olympics back to the people," he went on, "and that means there needs to be a complete change of the people at the top - the moneymen and the executives need to be kicked up the ass and booted out of the organisation, because as long as they're there, nothing will change."

Later on he also added he is "very happy to offer my services to the Terran Olympic Committee" and that "if they make me Chief Executive, I'll have everything sorted out within 2 months, that's a promise".
