WILL SABBAGH'S LLEADERSHIP BE CONTESTED?

Image
Sabbagh is still the definate face of her party but, because of her own victory, she may not have her position as Chairperson forever

It seems as if the mentality of the top ULD politicians has changed. A few terms ago, as we may remember, the party, even with all the wings and factions, would unite under the present leader and support them against most opposition, to prove the party's unity, which, with how successful the ULD has been, proved to be a good strategy. However, ever since Sabbagh, the current ULD Chairperson and Prime Minister has contested Simonette, the ex ULD chairperson and Prime Minister, and won with him, a lot has changed, visible on the latest congress, held in the Capital. Another possible motivation for the most prominent figures of the Liberal Democrats to contest Ms Sabbagh in the next election is the fact that apparently, President al-Saladin will not run for another term, which means that the ULD will hold primaries, which are always one of the best ways o headstart one's leadership campaign. However, for that strategy to work, the candidate mustn't win, as the ULD Chairperson may not run for or hold the position of president, according to the party's "constitution".

But that surely won't reduce the number of candidates that may run against the Prime Minister; Sahla Sabbagh has proven to be both a figure that unites the ULD politicians, and that splits them; first of all, the Teals, oof which Sabbagh herself is a member of; although the more moderate radicals agree with her compromise line and consider it an effort of making the ULD more appealing to conservative and centre-left voters, the true teal radicals, represented by Massimo Meir or Vespiano Badia agree that Sabbagh isn't necessarily the best candidate. And with the prior of the top radical teals practically confirming that he will run for the seat, everything is up in the air with this faction.

Image
Massimo Meir has voiced his ambitions to run for the seat of party leader multiple times before, but never as officially as this time.

Another interest group that may consider another candidate is the smallest of the three main party wings of the ULD (Teals, or radical capitalists-Centrists, or the moderates-Federalists the, well, federalists) could consider running their own candidate. Although this faction lacks strong figures within the party, with the most notable politician from this faction probably being Gianni Zurawiecki, the deputies whip, it is also by far the most flexible, as, with the umbrella ideology being federalism, it is appealing to many camps, and as such may be a vital endorsement for a candidate that would listen to them.

The two, or three, rather, minor party wings, if we are to count the "minority union" as a proper wing (the minority union unites politicians that are members, or are descendants of members of minorities in Istalia. We must remember that the ULD is by far the most popular party among minorities, with 40% of the party eligible to join this group) may run their own candidates and if they will get enough wind behind them, then they may be successful. Those factions are the conservative-liberals, or just less progressive ULD members, with their faces being the former AI member, Antonio Massa, and grandson of the former president, Mariano Lepera.

Image
Both of the politicians are know to be less progressive than most ULD MPs

Image
Although they still obviously support things like the right to abortion during the entire pregnacny or LGBTQ+ rights

Then, the other minor factions are the al-Saladin loyalists or the republican-democrats. They are also a big-tent faction, that puts the constitution above everything; they are the only people within the party that support a presidential system; apparently the constant discussions about that frustrated a-Saladin, and made him many enemies within the party, which also motivate him to allegedly not run again. The members of this wing are obviously the two men that headed the president's office; Gentile Horizonte and Andtreatto Ballerini. Ernesto Goa is also considered an al-Saladin loyalist.

Image
al-Saladin obviously has his backers, and they may be very important in the upcoming leadership elections

About loyalists; we may not forget about the current Chairperson's loyalists, which include the likes of Elmo Coppola, the Minister of Health and Social Services, and Davide Xhosa, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs. An influential bunch that, if Sabbagh's leadership will indeed be contested, they will indeed be a veritable base of support.

Image
Xhosa, who is slowly becoming the leading Sabbagh loyalist, intead of Coppola, will most likely support the current chairperson

But then again, there are other loyalists, those that still support the founding fathers of the ULD, the man synonymous with the party, and, alongside Badia, the most prominent young politician of the ULD; the Vespa-Baldassare loyalists. Although Sante Vespa-Baldassare did not announce his intent to run, his name enough would give him a good position, and his potential endorsement could be crucial if the voters will be split enough.

Image
Sante Vespa-Baldassare is the newest Vespa-Baldassare in parliament, serving alongside his Grandfather, who apparently won't run for a next term, and as such, for the first time in 60 years, he won't be an MP, and Sante will be the last Vespa-Baldassare left standing, for now, until Cesare grows up anyway.

But then again, we must remember to ask ourselves; will Sabbagh's position really be contested?

SABBAGH RESIGNS TOGETHER WITH THE RESULTS, "VOTERS ARE FURIOUS", SAYS HORIZONTE

The ULD lost, and it lost big; it is in it's weakest moment in more than 40 years, it seems. Sabbagh instantly resigned after the results were announced, with Davide Xhosa instantly becoming the Interim Chairperson, and Massimo Meir assuming the unique position of Secondary Interim Chairperson. Most within the party say that the flop was caused by the fact that President el-Saladin didn't endorse Badia, and entered n open conflict with the party's leadership after the man that he supported, Gentile Horizonte, did not win.Others say that the Blues and Constitutionalists took their voters, the MP seem to agree.

However, the situation will most likely be followed by some time of chaos and fights of internal factions for the leadership; with both Xhosa and Meir ineligible due to their positions, Coppola and his resignation from politics, and Badia's non-victory, which did make him eligible, but weakened his position, the ULD is brewing. However, with the Teals weakened greatly, and the Moderates taking time off, it seems as if new borders will be drawn in the party. Both Antonio Massa and Gentile Horizonte announced that they will run for leadership of the ULD; Cesare Vespa-Baldassare, who seems to have a strong position in the aforementioned, still big Moderate wing will most likely join the race too, and Gianni Zurawicki has drastically improved his position, too. ANd, if those four will indeed be the candidates, then not only will they all be men, a first for the ULD, but it will also mean that are under 40, and that the ULD may once again have their second youngest chairperson, although even Sante VB (27) wouldn't be younger than Phineas Abercrombie.

And, everything says that indeed, those four will be the candidates. So, let us take a look at them;

Image
Gentile Horizonte, 37, Former Chief-of-Staff to President al-Saladin

Gentile Horizonte represents the most unique torrent of the ULD; the one supporting the Presidential Republic, also the most socially progressive link of the party, often called the Democratic-Republicans. The DRs also support federalism, and a fptp system, and ecology. They seem to have good relations with the federalists and moderates, however, they are in the opposition to the largest faction, the teals.

Image
Antonio Massa, 36, Former AI Senator, Currently the National Coordinator

Antonio Massa is the most successful former AI member to join the ULD; now, allied with Mariano Lepera, former minister of defence, whom he announced as his candidate for First Vice-Chairperson, he is supported by a grop of moderates, and the more conservative ULD members, and has a strong position in the Padagnan structures of the ULD.

Image
Gianni Zurawiecki, 40, Former candidate for Minister of Education and Culture

Zurawiecki is seen as the leader of the Federalist faction, the third largest wing of the ULD. He is also currently the Deputies' whip. The Federalists are, obviously, Federalists, wanting to create the Istalian Federation, putting that as their main goal. They are also the most big-tent faction of the ULD, which will possibly allow their leader to easily find outside allies.

Image
Sante Vespa-Baldassare's, 27, only thing going for him is literally only his position as an MP. Oh, that and his surname

Vespa-Baldassare is the party's most symbolic Chairperson's grandson; that instantly makes him a member and the leader of the "monarchists". Although they *mostly* don't support a monarchy, they are called that, as they support the "monarchs" of the ULD, the most influential family of Istalian politics. Sante is a moderate himself, well, for ULD standards, although he has alligned with the Teals on many occassions.

President Pettini claims: "the left majority is assured, anyway, as a democracy lover, i still push for the partecipation of the Republican Party to the new government."

Image
The new Head of State, Sandro Pettini (74)

Even if the istalian people chose the communists to lead the state, and even if the political alliance of the left - PCI, IpT, FD and AR - has the large majority of 272 seats in the parliament, President Pettini stills struggles to bring the republicans into the government area. After istalians acclaimed the new president, hoping for a new period of change and reforms, they are ready again to support him, in this effort to enhance democracy in the country with this unusual act: indeed, laughing of the ULD's criticism which talked about the communists as a "authoritarian party", the new istalian president, instead, wants to create this large convergence to give Istalia a stable and equal government. "The left majority is assured, anyway, as a democracy lover, i still push for the partecipation of the Republican Party to the new government. I personally asked to the PRI leaders to join our alliance: I'm waiting for their response. The istalian population, anyway, has nothing to fear: if the centrists will refuse to join the new government, the left will anyway produce a new great executive which will do the well of Istalia."
Ernesto Revara (59), General secretary of the PCI and Candidate as Head of government, welcomes the words of Pettini, remembering the great support that the Republican Party gave to his executive ten years ago.
GOOD LUCK, OUR PRESIDENT!

Ernesto Revara è già all'opera in attesa di guidare il governo: quattro disegni di legge in discussione, annunciata la volontà di incrementare le aliquote fiscali per aumentare la spesa pubblica

Ernesto Revara is already working waiting to lead the government: four law proposals are in discussion, he also announced the will to raise taxes to enlarge public spending

The new government hasn't already began its activity, but Ernesto Revara, the PCI secretary that will again lead Istalia after seven years of opposition, already put on the table four proposals to be discussed with the members of the upcoming cabinet. The two proposed welfare reforms of Healthcare and Education are certainly the points which will make the istalians who chose the left proud of their vote. News aren't finished yet: in a meeting with the journalists, the upcoming Head of Government declared, smoking his unforgettable cigar: "We will change Istalia with new laws which will include a larger slice of rights for the oppressed people in our country, but I've already proposed to the new minister of finance (the ministry will be lead by Radical Alliance, as in the past Revara government) a new plan of taxation to enlarge public spending! The Republican Party already told us that it fears new problems for the farmers; let me remember them that I was the first to welcome the PRI proposal for a larger budget on farming, which the PCI put to vote during my past government and gained the majority. I would be dumb to delete such a conquer: with the new public funds, one of my first thoughts will be to put more money in the Ministry of Food and Agricolture, so, republicans and the farmers have nothing to fear!"
The second Revara government's hasn't began its operations yet, but already Istalia breathes a new wave of fresh air. This is the Era of Socialism!

HORIZONTE DEFATS ZURAWIECKI, BECOMES ULD CHAIRPERSON

Image
Horizonte will now be the third youngest person to lead the ULD and the first non-MP to do so (he didn't run)

And so, the race for the seat of the now, most likely opposition party of the Liberal Democrats is closed, and the results were announced. They surely weren't too surprising, however, they mean a big change for the ULD, and a shift in a different direction for the party. Gentile Horizonte, the winner of the race, was med with ovations lasting over five minutes, and with a great result; 68-32. He had an energetic campaign, clear goals, and a plan to, once again, make the ULD the largest party in the Istalian Parliament, saying that "100 MPs is the bare minimum". He also noted how the ULD was not hurt by any major scandals, but by becoming "the people's second or third party, behind the IpT and PCD", and that he will try to improve the ULD's visibility and expand its core.

Image
Although Zurawiecki's result may not be impressive at first, let us remind you that the polls gave him 27%

Horizonte, in his speech after his victory, announced that he will propose his two main backers, Antonio Massa and Sante-Vespa-Baldassare, prominent positions, and will make both of the Vice-Chairpeople. It seems as if he will also propose an important role to Davide Xhosa, the interim Chairperson, possibly endorsing him as Deputy Leader. It seems as if he may replace every higher-up or member of the big ten, with more flexible candidates, which would underline his effort to create a new landscape inside the party itself; the current division between teals, federalists and centrists seems to be no more, as only the last faction went undivided, surprisingly. The results look like the end of the triple wings, and it also appears as if new formations will form; be it around the likes of Massa and Lepera, or Horizonte and Vespa-Baldassare.

But the main question is; will the change in leadership help the ULD bounce back to the first place in parliament?

SAMARA ISSUES RED LINE TO COMMUNISTS
Image
Today, in an interview with the IpT's party news network, Notizie Unite, Rania Samara issued a red line to the Communists. "If you dare to embark a program of massive nationalization," she said, "then I will have no choice but to withdraw myself and my party's ministers from the cabinet. Unfortunately, they are, of course, already toeing the line. Hopefully they will step away, or they will lose the 2nd largest party in the coalition." Samara, the leader of the IpT, will be the Minister of Internal Affairs and a Deputy Prime Minister, and such a resignation would cripple the cabinet's ability to govern. Of course, such a situation would not be the first from the IpT. Their predecessor party, the PUP, resigned from the ULD-AI cabinet, which caused the end of that cabinet, the swearing-in of Samara as Prime Minister, and the dissolution of the AI. All eyes now turn to the communists to see whether or not they will back away from the red line.

Here is the speech that Revara just gave to the press:
"In referrement to the earthquake which occourred in Angona (http://classic.particracy.net/viewbill. ... 2&vote=yes) the government already stanced wealthy measures to adress the nearly million people hit by the disaster. As Head of Government I visited the many houses destroyed by the earthquake, assisted by ms. Samara of the Internal Affairs and a group of higly specialized tecnicians: I recognize the horribile situation which hit the city, and welcomed the claims of many people I encountered during this sad trip. A plan I proposed to Mr. Pettini and passed with a vote of confidence at the chamber of deputies, already ordered the construction of public houses in a fast time. The majority of people without an agible house have already been sent in safe places, but I call all the population of Mezzodiurno to show interest about the question: even more people will be put out of their home for reasons of security, and the help of every istalian is needed in this bad time for our country.
I thank every political force and organization for their help. Most of all, I thank every istalian citizen who is doing a wonderful job in helping the wounded, the medicals and the police forces who are heading their efforts."

MEMBERS OF THE ULD STUDENT WING WENT TO MEZZODIURNO AND HELPED THE PEOPLE ON PLACE

Image
Young Liberal Democrats "come to the rescue" in Angona

Although the ULD is often called a party of the rich and nobody else, with some saying that that is the reason why they've lost, the party decided to prove those people wrong- as said the first Vice-Chairperson, Antonio Massa. Well, the party didn't exactly do that; the student wing of the Liberal Democrats decided to organize help for the victims of the earthquakes in Mezzodiurno, and, as such, the students studying medical subjects became medics for the time being, with other university democrats helping the firefighters and army, who were present, clearing the gravel and rescuing people. However, older ULD members joined, too; some by giving the newly funded foundation helping the victims of the disaster, and others went to the place, with the doctors even joining their younger colleagues.

Image
Even the party's leadership was partly present

The party's leadership decided to help, too, with the Chairperson, Gentile Horizonte, helping raise funds in the capital, and going around the city with a piggybank for the suffering, and Antonio Massa going to the province and overseeing the help, joining with former first vice-chairperson, Elmo Coppola, who, although being a neuropsychiatrist, helped the people, and former Chairpeople, Grimaldo Simonette and Sahla Sabbagh, who were also present.

Image
Horizonte helped, too; from a distance, going around Romula with a can, asking the locals for funds to help the people of Angona. He himself gave the cause a few thousands

Many say that the ULD politicized the tragedy and did it all to gain more political momentum, which members confirmed to be partly true; however, they also said that it is a form of selfless aid for the victims, costing most people present virtually nothing, and realistically helping them, with ULD tents and funds being used in the destroyed region rampaged by one of the strongest earthquakes in the recent history of Istalia. Even Sante Vespa-Baldassare, who didn't come to Angona due to his works in the capital deposited 20 thousand to the charity (though, people say that he could give away ten times that, at least).
