Sagana Offers Ultimatum To Babpiboon; Fleet From Sangora Arrives

Image
Above: President Sagana

The freshly elected and strongly mandated President T. Sagana of Vanakalam has finally got all of her chess pieces on the board in the way she wishes, with the full might of the Vanakalamese navy now within firing range of the entrenched enclave caused by the Hanzen invasion of Vanakalam. The ships of the far-eastern nation are all positioned so as that they can be resupplied by smaller boats from land, but can also form a ring of containment around the small set of envoy ships sent by Hanzen to transport the troops now holding Gaigram's commercial port hostage - 2 frigates, 3 corvettes. The Vanakalamese military is reportedly wanting to avoid a direct confrontation, and the stated aim of the current positioning is to force the formation of a convoy back to Hanzen alongside the immediate evacuation of all Hanzen military officials and soldiers from the soil of Vanakalam.

The months-long occupation of the innermost commercial port area of Vanakalam's third richest city has caused great controversy for Sagana, who has yet to fully recover from an assassination attempt that caused brain damage and has left her with issues in controlling her physical activity to the degree she previously was able to. Sagana is still fully able to speak, however, and has used this power to make a clear ultimatum to Babpiboon: "We demand the immediate withdrawal of all Hanzen troops from Vanakalamese territory, to be evacuated back to Hanzen with the oversight of the Vanakalamese military. Failure to do so will result in a naval bombardment followed by a physical retaking by the military of the area". This would likely cause major casualties for both sides, as Hanzen troops have nowhere else to go while Sagana's forces would have to battle through a series of mines and defences.

Though the Vanakalamese military is now a veteran force in urban warfare after its civil war, the situation looks extreme in the area. The government of Vanakalam has also refuted the words of PM Babpiboon, who said that late President Tambethra Kumar had proclaimed: "Babpiboon, you strong guy, you good guy, got big nuts. Look Babpiboon, like deal you make with Xsampa lot. Like deal lot. Want say you, see if should make deal for Vanakalam". This was categorically denied, and Sagana also has refused Babpiboon's offer to 'make you feel good, I make head better, kay? You make good head for me too, kay?', which apparently 'freaked Sagana the fuck out' according to an inside source in the Presidential Palace. This all comes as reportedly Sagana is hoping to get her government involved in Kalkalistan, which has seemed dormant in the continent's series of wars.

Sagana Eyes Kalkalistan

Image
Above: President Sagana, who enjoys high favourability ratings and the full support of the military.

For years, rumours of President T. Sagana's interest in getting Vanakalam involved in Kalkalistani affairs has swirled amid the process of rebuilding Vanakalam continues after the civil war. With many of the nation's troops occupied containing the enclave that has formed in Gaigram, a situation that lingers on with the port now defacto annexed by Hanzen - though left unusable due to a blockade, it might seem strange for Sagana to be posturing for what could potentially thin her troops even further. Between rebuilding and containment, how could she hope to affect Kalkalistan? Further to that point, Sagana's navy is also occupied in the blockade, and what's more is that such an invasion would probably be rebuffed by the international community. Kalkalistan is also around six times larger than Vanakalam However, in a hemisphere dominated by conflict, Sagana may hope that this little power grab flies under the radar for the time being.

Kalkalistan is currently governed by an alliance of 24 princes from the 24 principalities that comprise the nation. These principalities range from ethnically Kalam regions in the north which share heritage with Vanakalam, to Kalkali (comprised of Rajutti and Zaqrami subgroups), Ananti, Rajavanshi, Khoni and Bhapori princedoms throughout the centre, west, east and south of the nation. The plurality ethnic group the Kalkalis, a blend of several more finite ethnic varieties, currently have massive sway in the politics of the nation. The elected Emperor of Kalkalistan is a Rajutti prince from the island of Kayal by the name of Raghu Thakore, a corrupt leader who has overseen a collapse in the local economy. Thakore holds power thanks to a diplomatic marriage with the only female Princess of the 24 regions, Princess Lakshmi Thakore of Bhapor. Using corruption, this marriage and the loyalty of his fellow Kalkali princes, he has seized power.

Yet he is deeply unpopular in the principalities that voted against him. Kalam and Khoni Kalkalistanis despise the prince for his corruption, and dream of overthrowing him. In a continent already riddled with war, Sagana may hope that she can ignite a new conflict on her continent, this time of her own choosing and to her own benefit. The border prince Varuthesh of Ashitha has already been noted to have met with Vanakalam officials. The issue in invading Kalkalistan and institution regime change is ultimately the size and diversity of it. Though its army has been let to rust after many years of peace, the nation's six main ethnic groups and 24 princes with different loyalties and goals all combine to create a messy picture. Fighting over one of the largest nations on Terra would be difficult, but rumour has it as many as seven princes are ready to rebel with Vanakalamese help. All the signs point to yet another bloody conflict.

Vanakalam-Backed Rebellion Occurs In Kalkalistan
October 4430

With the military and financial support of Vanakalam, a sudden and rapid shattering of intranational relations has occurred within the fractured and diverse ethnic patchwork of Kalkalistan. Kohni Prince Kaysan Jethani of Rajan Principality spoke to his own subjects and those of seven other regions of the 24-principality-nation, whose leaders had allowed him to broadcast his message. Prince Kaysan IV told his fellow Khoni and their Ananti cousins, as well as northern Kalkalistanis related to the Vanakalamese people, that the leadership of eastern Rajutti Prince Raghu Thakore of Kayal - crowned Emperor Raghu III after his election - was too corrupt for the fabric of the nation to continue as it is. In solidarity with the Vanakalamese people, he concluded, the best course of action was to unite the Vascanian people under ultimately democratic leadership with a confederated personal union.

This option would see the nations join in what is natively referred to as the "Vasakana League", after the native name for the continent. Prince Kaysan told his people that it would result in a more unified nation as a whole that would have strong leadership and new ideas, and announced his alliance with internationally controversial Vanakalamese leader President T. Sagana. The rebellion was quickly escalated from words into action, however, soon after Prince Kaysan spoke. Those disaffected with the leadership of Emperor Raghu III rose up across the country, particularly in the non-Rajutti western regions, causing mass riots with hundreds of police and protesters killed and tens of thousands injured. Mass-anarchy spilled into the streets as protesters used makeshift household items to go out into the streets and beat to death agents of the government. It was bloody and swift, but now the pro-Raghu military have shot down these protests.

Kalkalistan, the world's most populous nation and it's third largest by land mass, was soon plunged into open civil war. The fractured federation split cleanly into camps of different soldiers and people loyal to certain princes, who have mainly openly chosen a side on this civil war. Seven princes are decidedly anti-Raghu, thirteen are decidedly pro-Raghu. Four princes, however - all Ananti or Rajavanshi, have not yet announced their support in the new war. As the loyal militias of each sovereign and decided prince get into battle-lines and prepare for war, the scramble is on for emissaries to charm the undecided princes. The veteran Vanakalamese troops who won their civil war years ago have entered into the northernmost tenth of Vanakalam, setting up shop in the areas dominated by related people ethnically and a few areas even controlled by Rajutti princes supportive of Raghu. The 24 principalities have been plunged into war, so will experience from Vanakalam and zealous ethnic divides triumph over a well-manned and grounded regime?

Vanakalamese Army Invades Kalkalistan
April 4431

The army of the Free Democratic Republic of Vanakalam has entered into the nation of Kalkalistan to support the rebellion led by several of the nation's western princes in their fight against the Emperor Raghu III. Emperor Raghu has faced the rebellion for several months now, with rebel princes securing the dormant borders of their princedoms and creating mile-long palisades which have prevented the larger Raghu-supportive army led by his allied princes. It appears the rebel princes were settling down waiting for the intervention of Vanakalam, who would help them advance forward into the territory of the Emperor. The Emperor's cause was bolstered by the support of two more princes, though two others defected to the rebels from a neutral position - leaving all princes committed in the fight. The intervention of Vanakalam was expected, but they have already managed to take considerable territory.

The veteran-led force of Vanakalam made quick work of the militia-based Kalkalistani military. The loyalist military is not a professional force, but is instead the levy army of the local princes. This disorganised and backwards approach leaves the Emperor at a major disadvantage in a key area, as the area invaded - Ajuna - is the domain of his half-brother Zalim. Prince Zalim has take initiative in becoming the High Prince in the north, deputy to the Emperor in said region. Zalim's authority over other princes in the region was solidified as he was able to halt the Vanakalamese military before they marched on his seat of Sharya in Ajuna. Sharya's 3 million inhabitants make it the largest city in the northernmost principalities of Kalkalistan, a densely populated nation throughout. The largest city, concerning for the loyalists, is not too far from Ajuna relative to the nation's massive size.

The rebel princes and their neighbour loyalists are now increasingly openly in violent conflict with each other, as thousands have already died in the loyalist defence and rebel attacks. One area of concern is the domain of rebel Rajavanshi Prince of Vatavana, Tarun Chauhan. Prince Tarun, who has declared himself Lord of the Rajavanshis with the support of fellow Rajavanshi Prince of Vora, Mrigaj Naik, has created an isolated island of rebel support on the eastern coast of Kalkalistan. The nature of this enclave means Prince Mrigaj of Vora is rushing to relieve Prince Tarun with his feared ancestral Vorani Guard, the most elite fighters in the rebel prince arsenal. While the rescue of Tarun concerns the Rajavanshi rebels, and the consolidation of territory the other native rebels, the Vanakalamese push further into Ajuna and neighbouring Vaknis. Over the massive spread of territory in Kalkalistan, this could be the largest-scale war in recent Terran history - the battle-line is already bigger than the wider Dovani war.

Vanakalamese Advance As Empress Lakshmi Begins Fear-Based Strategy
October 4431

Image
Above: Empress Lakshmi

The situation in Kalkalistan has advanced quickly over the last few months, as Vanakalamese forces press forward in great numbers into the northernmost principalities of its southern neighbour. The territory of High Prince Zalim has been cut down severely by the veteran forces of President T. Sagana, though the Prince has been considerably more successful in battling the Kalam princes who have formed a Kalam Duchy. The Kalam Duchy is fighting alongside Sagana's Vanakalamese troops against the Northern Viceroyalty that High Prince Zalim leads. The three other princes under Zalim's direction have had mixed success, losing territory but inflicting hundreds of casualties on the Vanakalamese. The Kalkalistani tactic seems to be to try to neutralise as many Vanakalamese as possible, because the population of Kalkalistan means they would win a war based on the ability to take attrition and casualties.

Away from the Northern Viceroyalty, in the central region of the massive Kalkalistani nation, Prince Kaysan who leads the Khoni Duchy is having to face perhaps the most feared woman in the east - Empress Lakshmi "the Fierce" of Bhapor. Empress Lakshmi, the imperial consort to Emperor Raghu, was previously known by her seemingly strong taste for luxury in a nation that suffers terribly from poverty and hunger. Now, however, the stylish and smiley Princess is committing much more practical attacks onto the people of Kalkalistan. Prince Kaysan's troops have been harassed by repeated chemical attacks, and the Empress has had all the water sources in the region poisoned. Thousands of her own people have died as a result, as have thousands of Khoni troops. Lakshmi's brutality has only gotten worse and worse, and the bodies are piling up in this area. The results here are, however, very good or the Imperial forces thanks to said attacks.

In the south, the Rajavanshi Duchy remains divided between the Vorani and Vakavani forces, whose princes are trying to connect their forces. Prince Mrigaj of Vora has had a great amount of success in cutting through the enemy in his attempt to make a bridge to Prince Tarun of Vatavana before Tarun's forces are either overwhelmed or starved into death or submission. Unwilling to accept such a fate without a fight, Vatavani troops have killed masses of Raghu-loyal forces in the bloodiest theatre of the Vascanian War. Thousands, maybe even tens of thousands, have been felled in brutal street-by-street urban fighting and guerrilla warfare. Vatavani troops have built foxholes throughout their principality as the endless tide of Rajutti, pro-Raghu forces stream in. Brave troops from both sides have killed dozens of their enemy by just themselves before themselves being killed. The fatalities are mounting rapidly across Kalkalistan.

Below: Updated map of the conflict.

T. Sagana Wins Second Term
April 4432

T. Sagana has won in a landslide in the first elections for the President of the Confederated League of Vasakana, her second win at a Presidential election. Sagana won with 77% of the vote, with similarly high levels of support in both occupied Kalkalistan and Vanakalam individually. She won in all six Vanakalamese regions and all 17 principalities in which any territory is currently held by the CLV, though only half of these are predominantly held by Sagana's forces.

Sagana was endorsed by all political parties in Vanakalam, bar the communists, and all rebel princes in Kalkalistan, which - in the areas occupied - enjoyed its first democratic election for a nationwide office in history. Sagana's giant mandate re-inforces her hand in the developing situation in Kalkalistan, which she has invested tens of thousands of her own military troops into - with many returning home in caskets.

Sagana's Freedom Alliance won a 2/3rds majority in the 200-seat Vanakalamese devolved legislature, winning 137 seats, and won the governorship of all Vankalamese regions. Her ally T. Dyshini, the sister of the late President T. Kumar, won the position of Governor-General of Vanakalam, the highest position country-wide - though she still reports nationally to the proclaimed leader of both countries, T. Sagana. The Freedom Alliance's Kalkalistani counterpart, Alliance for a Free Kalkalistan, won 107 of the 200 seats in the newly-established Kalkalistani devolved legislature and all Princes loyal to Sagana got their allies elected bar a few irregularities. The election was so successful for Sagana, it has drawn criticism for possibly having been staged. While it is true that Sagana is very popular with her people, 77% is a very, very high number and so is 137 seats.

Plans to create a federal legislature of 100 seats are already under consideration for if the two nations are finally fully united as is planned. Sagana has vehemently dismissed rumours of cheat, calling them plots from the communist 'sore losers"' whose candidate won only 23% of the vote against Sagana. Sagana's nature as a leader has been up and down, with the economy in Vanakalam improving significantly but personal liberties being cracked down upon.

The government is increasingly authoritarian and repressive, and has implemented wide-scale surveillance and monitoring programs with the little resources they can muster. As the country grows, Sagana's military might does too. If the continent united, it would have more potential manpower than any other country on the globe. Alongside claims of election staging, claims of Sagana developing experimental weaponry that severely damages the environment have also been dismissed.

Brutality Continues In Kalkalistan
October 4432

The Empress Lakshmi of Bhapor has continued a reign of vicious barbarity, as public executions and torture persist among rebels captured and detained by her forces. Her elite and hardened Bhapori guard have continued to use terrible chemical weaponry on civilian and military targets in an attempt to force submission from the local populace. The luxurious former princess of Bhapor has been extremely successful in obliterating the levy troops of the Khoni lords, led by Prince Kaysan who is also the most senior leader in the rebellion out of the native figures involved. Kaysan's troops have been targeted viciously for brutal treatment as the "Black Empress" - as the native populous have started to call her - uses guerrilla warfare to reclaim territory lost to the secession. Lakshmi's enemies have also been crucified and burnt alive, often alongside their families, leaving no person in the region unknowing of her violence.

In the far south, Prince Mrigaj of Vora's mission to save the stranded and isolated Prince Tarun of Vatavana has nearly succeeded, and the distance between the later, who has had to push north to meet Mrigaj, and the former, who has had to battle through dense forest and waves of enemies, has been cut by three-quarters. If the two princes can consolidate their forces, they would pose a massive threat to the Rajavanshi loyalists, who have some of the weakest forces due to the fact they are siding against the will of most of the subjects. Most Rajavanshi, even those sworn to loyalists lords and princes, have chosen to aid the forces of the two princes in their efforts to reunite. They would, however, reunite in a bridge of rebel territory that would be on pressure from both sides. After uniting, the task of striking up rebellions from natives against their lords would begin - a task made much harder by news of the brutality of the regime against rebels.

Vanakalamese invaders, who style themselves as the "Liberation Forum" - a name inspired by the word 'Forum' being associated with Sagana in Vanakalam, due to its usage in the Vanakalamese civil war - have made significant progress. Originally struggling against High Prince Zalim and his large numbers of troops, the Vanakalamese have had increasing success through striking up rebellion and sedition among the minority populous who feel threatened by their Rajutti overlords. The Emperor, Raghu III of Kayal, has had to begin preparation plans for fighting the Vanakalamese in an area in which they excel: urban warfare.

With veterans from the civil war leading much of her forces, Sagana should be confident that if the war comes down to a battle through the streets she would probably win. What Raghu does to combat this remains to be seen, but Raghu apparently is more concerned with reports of a high-impact weapon Vanakalam is developing that makes terrain impassible. Details are not yet public, nor is confirmation of such a program being real.

Rajavanshi Rebels Unite; Sagana Prepares Medina Visit
October 4433

In major news regarding the development of the newly-proclaimed Confederated League of Vasakana, President T. Sagana has announced that she is planning to visit Medina and meet the new Medinese Emperor, Aaban, during which she will meet and talk regarding a potential alliance between the two countries and even a potential membership bid by the Confederated League of Vasakana into the Medina-fronted Dovani Union. The meeting would also involve potentially the two working together on defeating the Kalkalistani Emperor Raghu III once and for all through technology-sharing. Sagana will also pay her respects at the sight of the grave of the Emperor Azeez of Medina, who she describes as being a figure "greatly influential in the history of the country and a beloved figure among those who knew and served him". The prospect of new support technologically for Sagana is a frightening one for those who are fighting her.

In great news for the anti-Raghu rebels in the south of Kalkalistan, the two rebel Rajavanshi princes have united their forces and can now begin to work together to fight their opponents. Princes Mrigaj of Vora and Tarun of Vatavana united earlier this month after defeating the loyalist army sent to keep them separated. This victory, the largest yet achieved by the rebels without Vanakalamese help, has spurred enough confidence in the populous that rebellious riots have swarmed the severely weakened loyalist Rajavanshi prince's and their cities, threatening to tip the balance of power against the imperial court despite the numerical advantage that it seemed like Raghu of Kayal had started this war with. His only encouragement recently has been the effective brutality of his wife Lakshmi of Bhapor, whose crucifixions of dissidents has severely damaged the willingness of locals in the area to rebel against their overlords, at least in the central provinces.

Vanakalamese troops have continued to push out the northern loyalists from their strongholds, taking out the ancestral castle of High Prince Zalim and his family, to whom Emperor Raghu is a member, severely weakening the fighting resolve of loyalists in the area. Varakanaraja castle was taken by Vanakalamese forces after its garrison was withdrawn to reinforce the city of Sharya which has became the last place in imperial brother Zalim's home principality of Ajuna and thus is extremely valuable to the prince and the entire rebellion.

Losing Sharya would constitute an extremely crushing blow to the economy and the morale of loyalist troops, particularly those fighting against the veteran Vanakalamese forces in the far north. Despite the middling overall success the rebel cause has had as of yet in this war, including the factor of the Empress and her reign of terror over her own supposed subjects, the tide is subtly shifting. Rumours of Sagana investing in experimental weaponry remain denied.

Sharya Falls To Sagana's Troops; High Prince Zalim Captured
October 4434

Image
Above: Vanakalamese troops keep civilians away from danger zones.

The city of Sharya, the seat of High Prince Zalim the brother of Emperor Raghu and leader of the northern Rajutti princes, has fallen to the Vanakalamese forces loyal to President T. Sagana after months of brutal siege tactics and a then following long brawl through the urban battlefront. The metropolitan region, which had been reinforced by all the troops that the Raghu-loyal princes and the imperial brother in particular could muster, took a lot out of the Vanakalamese troops. It cost them many men and many resources in terms of ammunition and medical supplies due to the great numbers of enemy troops that attempted to block their path into the city centre and port region. The area around the port of Sharya was heavily defended but ultimately fell through the usage of highly-developed urban warfare tactics developed by the Vanakalamese after their civil war. These tactics proved brutally effective.

The Vanakalamese troops turned their attention to capturing three of the most important parts of the city: the port authority, which coordinates the already small, disorganised and disjointed Kalkalistani navy - with the aim of stopping any naval attacks in Vanakalam; the central plaza which was highly defended with turrets and machine guns, so that the Vanakalamese could have an open space to process items and new equipment; the royal palace of High Prince Zalim. Zalim had refused to flee because he had underestimated the brutal efficiency of the Vanakalamese armed forces in an urban warfare setting, and so when his army was eventually defeated he too was captured and is now being held by the Vanakalamese military forces. He is set to stand trial for undisclosed charges alongside his wife and retainers, though may be held for ransom or hostage exchange if necessary. The capture of the High Prince has destroyed already-low morale in the loyalist camp in the north.

In the centre of Vanakalam, the "Black Empress" - Lakshmi of Bhapor - has continued her years-long brutal campaign against the Khoni principalities that have risen up against the Emperor. The only area of success for the Emperor Raghu's supporters, Lakshmi's central line has moved deeper and deeper into the territory of her enemies. The Bhapori Guard obliterated some of the Khoni levies stationed in the internal border between Bhapor and its neighbouring Khoni state of Karadan. The Prince of Karadan has been forced to retreat into the territory of his fellow Khoni prince and ally Prince Kaysan Jethani of Rajan Principality. Further south, there has been opposing news - in the favour of the rebel forces - in the surrender of the loyalist Prince of Pathak, who was spared his life in return for the surrender of his territory. The vast swaths of land surrendered include many key settlements, most of which have popularly welcomed the news.

Sagana Meets Aaban, Announces DU Membership
April 4435

The President of the Confederated League of Vasakana, T. Sagana, and the Emperor of the Medinese Empire, Aaban I, have met in the Medinese capital. The two key eastern leaders, whose nations are separated only by a small channel, have been distant allies since the succession of Aaban unto the Medinese throne. His father, Emperor Azeez I of Medina, was an early international ally of Sagana back when she was engaged in a bitter civil war against her communist government - who she overthrew. These long and strong links between the imperial House of Medina and the Vasakanese unitarian regime have led to the two national leaders meeting 'on very good terms' according to insiders. The two heads of states discussed the state of affairs in Dovani, philosophy, politics and the situations in particular of their two respective nations - both of which are engaged in wars over claimed territory.

Both can share a common ambition for larger unions, and while Medina struggles with its imperialism and Vanakalam with its continental unionism, there is a major agreement which has came out of their private summit. The proclaimed Confederated League of Vasakana has announced that it will officially join the Dovani Union after the end of the war in Kalkalistan, which has been increasingly going the way of Sagana.

The 69-year-old Sagana will be 70 in a few days and there are growing concerns about the possibility that she should die before the war is over, throwing the plan into turmoil. However, to solve this looming issue, Sagana has put forward legislation in the Vanakalamese parliament to ensure that the agreement is enshrined in law. Sagana is three years away from fighting for another six-year term - her third - which she looks set to win, so there are no concerns about this legislation not passing.

With the agreement on DU joining likely, the DU is set to rapidly and massively increase in size, and more than double in terms of available overall manpower. Kalkalistan's violent centre is being closed in day-by-day by Vanakalamese and rebel forces, leaving the capital region under Emperor Raghu and the central region under Empress Lakshmi isolated in a sea of rebellion and popular movement against the loyalists and their monarchy. The violence may give way to a truly strong union across the continent, which would become a key ally of the Medinese and could one day even join in the continental war. A massive, veteran army provided by the Vasakani League would be a major development in the Dovani war, and could cause issues for nearby nations that have fought against the imperialist Medinese. With a summit, alliance and major agreement behind the two leaders, an alliance is on the verge of being borne that could massively alter the future history of Dovani.
