Chancellor Qaljupayare Impeached
Federal Congress prepares to elect new leader as charges of sexual harassment are brought against incumbent

Wednesday 16th March, 4487
Image

The Constitutional Court of Cifutingan has voted to impeach sitting Chancellor Anbu Qaljupayare following three separate accusations of sexual harassment from women in his office. In a unanimous 5-0 decision, the Court voted to remove Qaljupayare from office immediately while the case is heard before a federal court. The decision follows weeks of protests outside the court building in Kipatauw, the federal capital. Opposition leaders have said the action by the Constitutional Court is long overdue and emphasised that the accusations were known before the Chancellor's election in 4484.

With Qaljupayare officially removed from office, the Council of Delegates and the Council of Federation must now meet for a rare joint session in which they will elect a successor. In the meantime, the Vice-Chancellor will assume the position and all other legislative activity will be suspended. Qaljupayare is the first Chancellor to be impeached in a century and there is concern about whether the Congress will be able to decide on a replacement. Secret ballots will be held by the legislature until a candidate achieves two-thirds majority support from both houses.

Legislative elections last year were catastrophic for the Chancellor's Constitution Party and they no longer have a majority in either house. The traditional frontrunner in cases of impeachment, the Vice-Chancellor, will struggle to win election as Qaljupayare's successor due to his close ties to the Chancellor. Political commentators are suggesting that a compromise could be reached with opposition parties to select an independent candidate, with businessman Eilash Wesmer the current favourite.

A daily newspaper in al-Mina
March 4683

Wad Mabelat - Saleel el-Rahaim, a former military officer and Chairman of the Dovani Liberation Front (DLF; Jabhat Tahrir Dufaniin) has secured the approval of the National Elections Agency to be declared President of the Republic of Mina (Jumhuriat al-Mina) known to the outside world as Cigutingan. el-Rahaim and his party, the Dovani Liberation Front secured 273 seats in the Council of the Republic (Majlis al-Jumhuria), the unicameral legislature of the 300 member legislature. The remainder were made of political "independents" due to the collapse of the United National Congress party where many former members fled to the Dovani Liberation Front. el-Rahaim, a former strong man in the armed forces had announced his decision to run for President several years prior to the March, 4683 election and had effectively pushed out any opposition by the time the election had been declared. Dovani electoral observers from Midway, Ostland, the Vescanian Empire and others had criticized the election and deemed it "flawed" but the leadership of the DLF dismissed the claims and anti-Minan propaganda. Despite the claim that the election was flawed the news media inside and outside of Mina did not report on many electoral issues and the Armed Forces of Mina were a heavy presence on any who voted.

In southern Mina, near the Liore border in the Nefa State, violence during elections was carried out by various terrorist and political groups including Kitembo political groups who have influence in the state of Nefa due to the largest minority group in the Nefa state being Kitembo. Within the capital's own state of Wad Mabela the military and police presence deterred most violence but spats of riots and protests broke out but were swiftly handled by the Republican Guard. In accordance with a law passed by the Council of the Republic days prior to the election, done entirely by members of the Dovani Liberation Front, the Republican Guard had unrestrained authority to put down any attempts to "...violate the sanctity of the electoral process." Despite this, the polls were generally calm and President-elect el-Rahaim will take the reigns almost immediately due to former President Saif el-Uddin fleeing the country after it was reported that his life was threatened by "terrorist groups". Despite the problems facing the elections in Mina, the outside world celebrates a somewhat peaceful transition of power. Ostland Grand Duke Franz and State Chancellor Kaleb Hans von und zu Zeisl called to congratulate the President-elect, Prime Minister of New Englia Leon Kinnerk called and congratulated the new President and allegedly spoke on working together to build relations between the two countries.

Protests over failure to appoint Prime Minister
April 4686

Wad Mabelat - Protests have rocked the capital city of Wad Mabelat as the President and his Dovani Liberation Front have failed to appoint a Prime Minister, despite pleas from protestors to do so. Traditionally, the DLF has not appointed a Prime Minister and allowed the President to exercise near total control over the government in Mina. The Prime Minister whose role is largely the day to day operator of the government possesses several important functions such as certain authority to appoint political positions and carry out functions of the government that the President is generally not entitled to. The decision to not appoint a Prime Minister is against the constitution of the republic and many of the protestors have called for the resignation of the DLF and the President himself; something that the DLF is not keen to give up. Protests have grown significantly since they started in April, 4685 when the decision to not appoint a new Prime Minister following a deadline from opposition parties and organizations. The protests now number in the 100,000s each day, they have been relatively peaceful but the heavy presence of the Republican Guard has caused some opposition leaders concern and state that the regular police force should be used in lieu of the Presidentially appointed and funded Republican Guard.

Minan government agrees to arms deal with MOI
January, 4687

Despite ongoing violence, the Majatran Organization for Industrialization has announced that the Armed Forces of Mina have purchased several dozen new pieces of equipment. A multi-billion dollar LOD includes 150 al-Khalid II main battle tanks, 20 JF-17 fighter jets and several dozen other pieces of equipment including small arms and vehicles. The deal, controversial but warranted, has stoked further protests that the Republican Guard has begun to crack down on throughout the country notably in the largest Ahmadi-based areas where the Dovani Liberation Front has experienced limited armed conflict with armed Ahmadi militias. While Mina has served as a largely stable East Dovani state, it possesses the largest Ahmadi population in East Dovani and also, according to the Trond Henrichsen Institute for International Affairs has the highest number of radicalized Ahmadi's despite the efforts of the government which has attempted to crackdown on radical Ahmadi clerics and imams. Mufti Shujaa al-Sadek, the leading religious leader in the Ahmadi Liberation Party (Majatran: Hizb al-Tahrir al-Ahmadii) and religious contemporary to party leader Shafeeq al-Mansouri, a deeply religious extremist who is allegedly linked to have ties to Ahmadi State in East Dovani and several other local terrorist groups.

As reported by several prominent sources inside the Ministry of Information and Communications there has been a movement to crack down on the free press, including this very newspaper which has largely served as an independent source of information for Mina. Opposition movements outside of the religious Ahmadi Liberation Party, such as the Majatran Socialist Ba'ath Party - Mina, the Minan Communist Party, the Minan People's Movement, the Popular Democratic Party and the National Liberal Party have stood opposite of the Ahmadi Liberation Party and the big tent Dovani Liberation Front. Several of these opposition parties, namely the Majatran Socialist Ba'ath Party - Mina Region and the Minan Communist Party have formed paramilitary units to combat the ALP and the DLF over the past several months though no reported combat has taken place.
