Training Mission in Jelbania To Counter Terror Attacks
Native Security Forces Armed and Ready to Deal With "Murderous Dogs of the Desert"

Vanukean military personnel provide training to Northern Protectorate of Jelbania counterparts.

December 4532 - The Vanukean government has announced steps to strengthen security in the Northern Protectorate of Jelbania (NPJ) following a spate of terror attacks by forces loyal to the former government.

The majority of frontline duties have now been transferred to native Jelbanian security forces after a comprehensive training and equipment upgrading mission. This means the number of Vanukean home forces present in the Northern Protectorate have been downsized and are concentrated in key areas such as the protectorate capital, Rklemjistad, and at important industrial sites.

Shmil Knzsrlji, the Wrntusrljikai of the NPJ, said: "Over the last two and a half years, native Jelbanian security forces have received extensive training and equipment upgrades from Vanukean counterparts, so that we are better prepared to deal with the terrorist insurgencies that have led to a number of deaths.

"We will not allow these murderous dogs of the desert to drag our country back to the stone age with their barbaric and isolationist ways. We stand firm behind progress that our partnership with Vanuku provides."

Meanwhile, Vanuku has issued a stark warning to Deltaria over the possible testing of it first nuclear weapon in the Majatran Sea.

The Government reacted quickly to the Deltarian Military suggestions that the busy body of water was a "favoured" site to drop the prototype nuclear weapon, which can be delivered by the TU-160 strategic bomber.

Prefect Herlkai Vrhelmszo said: "Contrary to this line of thinking, the Majatran Sea is the worst possible site in which the Deltarian government could test its prototype nuclear bomb. The amount of commercial and naval traffic on the sea lanes needs to be taken into account as does the ecological implications of such a detonation.

"We urge the Deltarian government to listen to its scientists on this matter - and advice from third parties, such as ourselves - when looking to test this device."

Vanuku Responds To Deltaria Over Withdrawal From Jelbania
Security of Citizens in Protectorates Must Be Guaranteed First and Foremost, Says Foreign Minister

Image
Foreign Minister Baroness Jezklune Anzlék - who says Vanuku will leave Jelbania once its security commitments have been fulfilled.

September 4536 - The Vanukean government has confirmed there will be a time in "the near future" when it is ready to completely withdraw military forces from northern Jelbania - but that time has not yet arrived

The Foreign Ministry was responding to Deltaria's decision to unilaterally remove its forces from the Southern Protectorate of Jelbania - calling on the kingdom to follow suit in the north.

Around 800 Vanukean civilians or military personnel have died over the last seven years as the result of attacks by Jelbanian independence forces. But despite this, the Vanukean government has continued to provide millions of VAN in economic support in the Northern Protectorate and are in the middle of training and equipping domestic security forces.

Foreign Minister Baroness Jezklune Anzlék said: "We have been informed of Deltaria's decision to withdraw for the Southern Protectorate and have been encouraged by the government in Cachtice to follow their lead on this.

"However, Vanuku's mission to restore order and economic prosperity in the northern half of Jelbania is not yet complete. To leave now, prematurely, would jeopardise everything we have attempted to build there and leave the many millions of people who have put their trust in us in danger from the insurgents who attempt to terrorise every day life.

"The decision of when, and how, Vanuku leaves Jelbania will be made on our terms, in conjunction with the Northern Protectorate government, and is based ultimately on our being satisfied our security mission is completed."

Behind the scenes, the Vanukean government is understood to be heavily critical of Deltaria's sudden abandoning of the Southern Protectorate, leaving it vulnerable to attack from insurgents. Most experts agree that Deltaria's decision to leave at this stage badly exposes the Southern Protectorate Government to attack and potential overthrow.

Political analysts have cited the decision as the latest in a line of of questionable foreign policy moves by Deltaria that belie its "great power" status. They include a decision to detonate a nuclear bomb in the Majatran sea, despite obvious international protestations, and reported unnecessary interference in the Malivian-Selucian islandssovereignty affair.

Vanuku Announces Major Upgrades to Fully Modernise Its Armed Forces
Land, Sea and Air Contingents to Benefit From Huge Investment Programme Over Next 10 Years

Image
The deadly Cheetah Mark IV battle tank which will be upgraded as part of the massive armed forces spending programme.

June 4537 -The government has announced its commitment to introduce significant improvements and carry out substantial upgrades to all branches of its armed forces.

A multi-billion VAN decade-long investment has been unveiled which the Ministry of Defence says will ensure Vanuku continues as the pre-eminent military in the southern hemisphere and one of Terra's greatest powers for many decades to come.

As well as personnel training and the development of improved tactical and strategic doctrines based on recent conflicts, vast amounts are to be spent on improving current hardware.

From the army point of view this includes - reassessment of engine, armour and weaponry on the Cheetah Mark IV main battle tank and the Salient Infantry Fighting Vehicle. Redevelopment of the infantry's secondary and light small arms weaponry in line with the Majatran Assault Rifle technology developed with Istalia earlier this century.

On the naval side it includes - upgrading of ASW, AA and detection capabilities on all escort craft including Wiel-class destroyers, Tekmak-class cruisers and Banstill-class frigates Improvements to the defence capabilities of Vanuku's fleet of Támnr-class nuclear super carriers, including the installation of new anti-ship cruise missiles and surface to air and surface to surface missile systems.

From the airforce perspective the investment includes modifications to the S-44A, S-44B and S-10 Tanhri stealth fighter family, including a new four-barrel cannon as well as modifications to external missile and bomb hardpoints and internal weapons bays on all craft.

The MoD has also announced its intention to launch and commission a new carrier strike group - based around a brand new Támnr-class carrier within the next decade. It will be the sixth fleet of its kind in the Vanukean navy and will be expected to perform both domestic and international peacekeeping and security duties.

Vanuku's existing task forces are positioned around the waters of Terra: the Fourth fleet is based at the Bozo River facility in Kalistan, the bulk of the Third Fleet remains concentrated in Keymonite coastal waters and the Fifth Fleet is carrying out patrols in the southern Anantonese Ocean. The two remaining CSGs patrol domestic waters in both the Majatran Sea and Verranderlijke (Red Bass) Ocean. The sixth fleet will work with these on a rotational basis providing more flexibility in the naval network.

Prefect Herlkai Vrhelmszo said: "For the last 20 years our economy has been largely orientated towards consumer production and ensuring huge infrastructure projects such as our nuclear energy programme have bedded in. But we have never forgotten our military traditions and our commitment to Majatran and Terran security. That is why I am announcing this 10-year plan to ensure we remain in an unrivalled position for many decades to come.

"While our emphasis on this occasion is on modernisation and upgrading, the government will continue to work with our biggest defence firms such as Vanutech, Royal Krmj and Shipyard Havendam to research and develop new military hardware in all areas and the fruits of these labours will be regularly rolled out over the coming years."

Vote To Be Held To Decide on Future of Northern Jelbania
Vanuku Says It Will Abide By Outcome of Next Year's Plebiscite on Possible Reunification With the South.

Image
All members of the Northern Protectorate electorate will be eligible to vote in the upcoming plebiscite.

December 4537 - A plebiscite is being arranged for next spring to decide the future direction of the Northern Protectorate of Jelbania.

With Vanuku's six-year security and economic stability mission now nearing completion, the people of the territory will be asked to vote on either maintaining the status quo or to forge ahead with unification with the south of the country.

The plebiscite will be co-ordinated by Shmil Knzsrlji's Northern Protectorate government and overseen by the Vanuku security forces. Independent observers from the World Congress have also been invited to oversee the process to ensure it remains free, fair and independent.

The question asked will be: Should the Northern Protectorate takes steps towards political union with the Jelbek Republic?

There have been calls for the Northern Protectorate to reunite with the newly formed southern Jelbek Republic, which was formed after the territory was left to its own devices by former protector Deltaria two years ago. There are others who believe the Protectorate's future should remain inexorably linked to Vanuku, given the level of economic and military security provided by the Kingdom.

Foreign Minister Baroness Jezklune Anzlék said: "This plebiscite will decide the future of the Northern Protectorate and, ultimately, whether there is a will to reunite with the remaining Jelbanian territory in the south. This would bring to an end our role in the territory as defined in the Treaty of Čachtice.

"Vanuku will do all it can to facilitate the express wishes of the people of the North based on the outcome of the vote and will abide by the will of the majority.

"Any further move towards formal reunification would then depend on talks between the administrations in Rklemjistad (Northern Protectorate) and Baofluz (Jelbek Republic)."

Voters Chalk Up Resounding Yes For Political Union Progress
Northern Protectorate Set to Hold Talks With Southern Republic Following Result of Plebiscite

Image
Yes voters celebrate their success in the plebiscite which gave the green light for potential unification.

August 4538 - Citizens in the Northern Protectorate have voted by around two-to-one in favour of pushing ahead with unification with fellow Jelbanians in the south of the country.

The Vanukean government, that currently administers the neighbouring territory, said it will abide by the decision of the plebiscite which was arranged to decide the future direction of the Protectorate.

Asked the question "Should the Northern Protectorate takes steps towards political union with the Jelbek Republic?" just over 61 per cent of the electorate said "yes'.

Channels are now being opened between Shmil Knzsrlji, the head of government in the Northern Protectorate, and Wrntusrljikai Mrjkai Frjsrl who heads up the administration in the southern Republic.

If talks go well political unification could be on the cards within the next 12 months to two years, political experts suggest.

Foreign Minister Baroness Jezklune Anzlék said: ""We have spent seven years administering the Protectorate and are keen to ensure the will of the people is followed. The main thing is that the there is a safe and stable transition towards union, so that the people of any kind of greater Jelbania will prosper."

Foreign Minister Calls on Deltaria to Step Away From "Malivy Islands" Dispute
Baroness Anzlék Says International Community Will Take Dim View Over Threats To Selucia

July 4540 - Vanuku's Foreign Ministry has called on Deltaria to step away from the ongoing sovereignty dispute between Selucia and Malivia saying its interference is unnecessary and only exacerbating tensions.

Foreign Minister Baroness Jezklune Anzlék also stated that attempts by the Deltarian government to pressurise Selucia into holding talks with Malivia or face open-ended consequences would be perceived as sinister bullying tactics by many members of the international community and were "not becoming" of a great power.

Baroness Anzlék said: "There are many parties involved within the current debate to whom blame can be, arguably, attributed. But the fact of the matter is that the international community must act as one on this matter. In acting unilaterally, Deltaria not only jeopardises the ability for the world community to help resolve this issue but may well ramp up the tensions too. Certainly the threat of "consequences" should Selucia not comply with Deltaria's demands to open talks is a great cause for concern.

" Vanuku, and I am sure the international community as a whole, will take a dim view if these consequences turn out to be militaristic in nature and impinge on Selucia's sovereignty and will be similarly disheartened if Deltaria decides to enforce unilateral economic sanctions because its demands have not been met. Deltaria's interests would be best served by clarifying its intentions and then by instigating any further discourse through the World Congress so a peaceful outcome can be brokered."
