Party Members Detained Over "Foreign Plot"
May 4546

Hundreds of senior BSNP party members have been arrested by security forces in the past 36 hours. The members have been accused of "plotting with a foreign power to subvert Barmenistani democracy." A spokesperson for the military police said that 731 party members had been arrested and detained over receiving bribes from a "hostile power" to vote against the confirmation of Shophet Tawaryan as the ruling party's General Secretary at the next party Congress. Many of the arrested members are candidates for election as party delegates - a group that chooses the party leader every year.

Though it has not been publicly announced, many believe that the hostile power in question is Deltaria and its CARSS alliance. The BSNP has been divided over the issue of the government's rapprochement with Vanuku, with many leftwing members remaining stoutly in favour of the traditional alliance with Deltaria while the more pragmatist wing led by Tawaryan, in favour of a more balanced approach to the two Terran powers.

Militias Pour Into Sekhmet
July 4616

Panic has spread throughout the capital Sekhmet following the entrance of several "mountain" militiamen. Thousands of Sekhmetis have fled the city, heading towards the southern border with Vanuku, many of them former Bourbon-era civil servants and soldiers. The fall of Sekhmet to the militias who call themselves the Free Barmenistani Brigades, follows upon three years of intense fighting which saw the Brigades steadily push south from their central Barmenistani homelands. The Brigades are a loose alliance of several tribal and militia militia groups radicalised by the 4613 takeover of the Zardic Empire.

The intense if disorderly patriotic uprising that followed the event has now dislodged the Zards...and also, any semblance of stability which the foreign occupier restored to the troubled northern Majatran nation. Tensions between the Brigades are already very high with 12 militiamen killed in a gun battle between two militias over the spoils of the captured city. Several of the militia have longstanding tribal and confessional feuds, united very briefly and uneasily only in the fire of nationalistic passion. No figure has advanced to the front as the leader of the Brigades, each one jealously guarding its independence,

The situation in the country is as grim as it have ever been. To the south of Sekhmet, other non-aligned militias continue to wreck havoc in cross-border raids into Vanuku supposedly in pursuit of fleeing Bourbon loyalists or perhaps. just more good old loot. World Congress Representative Saif al-Abadi called on nations to "move speedily to seek a resolution to the Barmenistani conflict'

Militia Activity Spikes Up In Central Barmenistan
July 4624

Militia attacks have been reported in the rural highlands of central Barmenistan. The most high profile event was the kidnapping of twelve tourists just outside the town of Belek. The two, believed to Kafuris and Rildanorien, were visiting an ancient Qedarite (OOC: Phoenician) ruin. A group which calls itself "The Martyrs For A Free Fatherland" has claimed responsibility and vowed to execute them unless Vanukean troops withdraw from Barmenistan and the government in Sekhmet steps down. The Vanukeans are widely credited with restoring some stability to the northern Majatran nation, particularly in the southern regions.

Other militias have chosen to focus on less flashy methods of raising both the profiles and revenues in building up their strengths. Some are focusing on bank and highway robberies, trafficking of all sorts of illicit goods and extortion from the few local businesses operating in the area. Security analysts claim to have noted certain patterns which suggest that the militia might be cooperating more than they did previously when they seized the capital and then descended into an orgy of violence between themselves. The same analysts also estimated the strength of the militias at "no more than a few hundred"

Barmenian Sun
Ahmadi Brmek militia seizes elements of the capital
August, 4795

Image
Reported image from outskirts of Séleuefluz.

Séleuefluz, Ufne - Limited reports from the capital of Barmenia, Séleuefluz, reports that a large number of militia soldiers were reported entering the outskirts of the city largely on horseback. In recent months there has been increased activity in the mountain areas of Barmenia regarding largely Ahmadi Brmek militias, these have linked up with other militias including the prominent Ahmadi Sons of the Mountain (Bizhezi: Kurên Ehmedê miyê) which is a significant Israist militia that has long held sway in political circles across Barmenia. Government officials from the interim government have denied the report thought members of the Barmenian Sun, the nations largest newspaper, have reported that a large majority of the government has fled the capital. It appears that the organization responsible for the surge in the capital is the Ahmadi Brmek-based Ám'ádsrlji Taghereklemkai (Luthorian: Ahmadi Field Watchmen) which has been surging in recent years due to perceived support from Vanuku and Jelbania; though this hasn't been proven. In recent years Barmenia has suffered under the hands of interim government after interim government, largely lead by former members of the Popular Socialist Party, and has in recent months dipped low in approval and support ratings. An uprising against the interim, caretaker governments is not unsurprising and over the summer of 4795 the government has faced a series of protests and rallies against its policies.

Representation Not Competition
New political movement seeks to end political deadlock through consociational approach

May 4831

Several Barmenistani political and civic society groups have come together in the Barmenistan National Council, a project described by the Northern Majatran Times as "an ambitious and resolute ateempt to restore civilised governance." The group held its inaugural convention in the capital Seleufluz declaring it's intention to form a consociational government system representative of the various groups of the country's uniquely diverse patchwork of ethinic, linguistic and religious groups. This attempt is hardly the first at finding a so-called magic formula which will represent as many groups as possible in a manner that is satisfactory to the smallest and medium sized ones without sparking resentment from the inevitably underrepresented major groups. The old sectarian-based Ur Bahra Agreement which was implemented in the last days of the first Jelbic Khaganate was perhaps the most notable attempt so far. A spokesman for the National Council said that they planned a formula based on more factors include gender, age and regional representation.

The Cat Herder's Tale

Barmenistani political factions form new government.

March 27, 4832
The ruling National Council party has, after ten months of negotiation, finally cobbled together a government. State President Jalil Salehi presented his new government which consists of one premier, five deputy premiers, thirteen ministers and one hundred and thirty minister (deputy ministers) He also showed off a copy of 1,872 page agreement governing the whole thing. Certain religious factions wanted guaranteed on issues such as sex segregation and food preparation in schools, A Jelbic faction demanded a guarantee on a referendum to join the Jelbic Khaganate. The Seleufluz Fiddle said that "most of the apparent principles were soothed away with dollops of public spending pledges"; the paper estimated that the pledges in the agreement may increase public spending by 30% in the next five years.

And with all that, Barmenistan has gotten it's first elected and functional-ish government in nine years. One man has been given most of the credit - the new State President Jalil Salehi. Salehi lent the prestige of his largely ceremonial office to push reluctant parties and factions. The 58 year old former World Congress diplomat praised the various political factions for fulfilling their patriotic duty and expressed confidence in the new premier Temrkai Hzar a 65 year old former civil servant.
