Malivia "asks" Vascania to release Deltarian agents

Prime Minister Patanjali Ganapuli told a press conference this afternoon that earlier in the day he had a conversation with the Vascanian Foreign Minister, and that in the course of the conversation, he "asked the Vascanian government to consider releasing the Deltarian agents captured at sea as a gesture of goodwill and reconciliation".

Malivia is still hoping to host a peace conference between its two closest allies, Vascania and Deltaria.

Gerajatva protesters picket Hosian services for freighter victims

Hundreds of Gerajatva (OOC: Hindutva/hardline Hindu ideology) protesters descended on Modalin Cathedral today, the religious headquarters of the Bishopal Church, to protest against a religious service being held for the victims of the sinking of a freighter carrying humanitarian supplies to Liore.

Chanda Phadanis, the organiser of the protests, said the Bishopal Church was "hypocritical" because "it only cares about the enemies of the Raktavani (OOC: Indian) people". He continued:

Why is it the Bishopal Church, the Aurorian Church and all the other Hosian churches hold service after service for the people who died in this accident - which was Deltaria's fault - yet none of them say a single word about the brave Vascanian sailors who were murdered by Deltarian war criminals? Why do they always do everything they can to make Vascania look bad and Deltaria look good? Malivia is a Raktavani (OOC: Indian) nation, and the Vascanians are our own flesh and blood. If we have to have Hosian churches in this country, then they should be praying for Vascania in this conflict, not for the foreigners.

Chatur Nijasure, the former Internal Affairs Minister and Prime Ministerial hopeful, has lent his support to the protesters, accusing the Hosian churches of "becoming mouthpieces of Deltarian propaganda".

The Bishopal Church and the Aurorian Patriarchal Church both deny taking sides in the dispute between Vascania and Malivia, and insist they pray for all of the victims of the conflict and for a peaceful resolution as soon as possible.

Swami Council pronounces Lord Hoba a Gerajan god

The Swami Council based in Hitam, which is the closest thing Geraja (OOC: Hinduism) has to an authoritative body in Malivia, has announced it now recognises Lord Hoba as a Gerajan god. Lord Hoba is the central figure of worship in Hobaism, a pagan religion with a significant presence in Malivia's neighbour, Hobrazia.

In a statement, the Council described Geraja and Hobaism as "sister religions, and in our humble view, essentially part of the same ancient tradition". The statement continued to say the Council hoped "links between Gerajans and Hobaists, Malivians and Hobrazians, will deepen in the years ahead, with spiritually enriching results for all".

Prime Minister Patanjali Ganapuli welcomed the move, saying he "always had great reverence for Lord Hoba". He also warned the Hobrazian government "to respect Hobrazia's religious character and not to go down the path of Hosian religious supremacy". This was seen as a reference to the perceived Hosian leanings of the party that has just come to power in Hobrazia.

Ganapuli set to resign

After several years of speculation over whether he was about to stand down, Patanjali Ganapuli has finally announced he intends to step down as leader of the Raktavani National Party and Prime Minister, as soon as his party appoints his successor.

The last General Election saw a shakier-than-usual performance for the party, winning 288 of the Lok Sabha's 400 seats - a comfortable majority, but well short of the domination the party has become accustomed to. Nevertheless, Ganapuli will be resigning on a "high", having won widespread credit for his role in brokering the peace accord between Deltaria and Malivia. His critics argue his role in the peace negotiations was less than has been claimed, and that other international actors - in particular, Indrala - may have had as big or bigger a role than he did. Nevertheless, at least in terms of Malivian public opinion, it seems difficult to disagree Ganapuli personal prestige is at its highest.

A specially-convened party conference of 1000 delegates will shortly meet to elect the nation's next leader. The candidates declared so far are:

Chatur Nijasure

Hardline former Internal Affairs Minister and very much the man to beat in the contest. He is committed to ending Malivia's special relationship with Deltaria, ending the military alliance and evicting them from their naval base in Dušanpur.

Jamadagni Ganapuli

It is no secret the Prime Minister has been trying to groom his son to succeed him. Jamadagni Ganapuli is very much on the more liberal wing of the party, but he has been less than sure-footed in his attempts to appease conservatives, often alienating both sides in his attempts to appeal to both.

Ramesh Vemulakonda

Like Nijasure, Vemulakonda is on the more hardline wing of the party. He built up enough support in the party to force the Prime Minister - against his better judgement - to stake territorial claims on most of Malivia's neighbours. At one time he had seemed strong enough to overthrow the Prime Minister, if he had wished to do so. However, he has been loyal to the leadership for many years now, and although occasionally outspoken, is regarded as a "safe pair of hands". Over the last few years he has positioned himself for the leadership race by pivoting more towards the moderates, but it seems unlikely his views have fundamentally changed.

Arpit Bajpai

The former Foreign Minister has long been regarded as the leader of the party's liberal wing on the backbenches. He is firmly committed to dropping Malivia's territorial claims on its neighbours and softening the government's anti-Hosian policies.

Arjuna Singh

The Finance Minister is on the right wing of the party on economic issues, and has long despaired at what he sees as the country's excessive public spending, taxation and intervention in the economy. He wants to cut defence spending, in particular - a policy which is not universally popular in a party which prides itself on a strong defence force. He is popular in the business community, and has by far the best funded of the campaigns, but even so, his chances of success seem distant. Those close to him say if he does not win the contest, he is likely to retire to the backbenches.

Nagini Kapudia

Kapudia shares Singh's distaste for Malivia's high levels of defence spending, but there their similarities end, since she is very much on the socialist wing of the party, advocating higher taxes and public spending, and an explicit commitment to narrowing income inequality.

Devdas Adhvaryu

A former Gau Raksha Paltan (Cow Protection Army) operative, Adhvaryu was controversially released from prison following negotiations between the government and Gau Raksha Paltan plane hijackers back in 4785. Since then, he has become a popular figure within the Raktavani National Party. Uniquely amongst the candidates, Adhvaryu is not a member of the Lok Sabha and will not become Prime Minister if he wins the election. He argues the position of party leader should be separate from the position of Prime Minister.

Satyender Ahluwalia

Ever-loyal to the leadership, but regarded as a hopeless buffoon by his parliamentary colleagues and the public, the Minister for Cows nevertheless has always been popular with party members and is likely to draw in some support.

Sanjay Mahadeo

Like Bajpai, Mahadeo is from the more liberal wing of the party, although unlike him, has kept a lower profile and been more careful not to ruffle the feathers of those who disagree with him. His prestige is considerably enhanced by his status as the descendant of Bhima Mahadeo, who led the revolt of the Rajutti Liberation Front against the East Artania Company in the 4130s and 4140s.
