Feedback: Natural Resources (including Oil and Gas)

Postby Auditorii » Mon Nov 14, 2022 7:21 pm

Note: This information is provided as an OPTIONAL resource for players to use in RP. Conformance to these is not binding and is not a game rule.

Greetings all,

I wanted to share something that I've worked on for a bit and wanted to get feedback regarding. The creation of the oil and gas maps cleared up a lot of issues regarding who had what and who generated what in terms of oil and gas production, in reality all petroleum product production. The topic of other natural resources has been brought up from time to time, both by the community and different teams of Moderators. I've worked out a randomized list of nations with access to several dozen resources, including a mixed list of rare earth elements (REEs).

The list of resources included are: coal, bauxite, phosphorous, copper, helium, iron, uranium, lithium, gold, diamond, silicon, chromium, silver, nickel, sulfur and rare earth metals/elements (a combined category due to the number of them).

You can view the list here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing

This was generated by putting a list of every nation in-game and forum based countries into a list randomizer at random.org (https://www.random.org/lists/?mode=advanced) and then whatever the first results were, putting them into a spreadsheet. The numbers next to the natural resources indicate, more or less, the amount of real world nations that have reserves/access to mining of these resources.

A note for uranium there would be restrictions on its further production (creation of nuclear technologies, weapons, etc.) that would be tied to the dynamic rankings.

Hi,

I think its a great list. Have you thought of a ranking as in how much is present in each of these nations like the maps do for oil and gas? I would also argue that we put the oil and gas map in this chart as well and make sure that we seperate them, I doubt that all nations that have natural gas also automaticly have oil as well.

But I'm quite happy with this because I was looking towards expanding Saridan's economic information and was hoping for gold mines to keep that South African vibe going. The uranium is a nice bonus which I would like to keep at a level for national consumption and minimum export as in quantity available.

We tied natural gas and oil as generally they are linked, but I guess there could be a discussion on the production of them separately.

In terms of rankings I was thinking of doing what I've called the "one-third system" where you divide the list into thirds and basically the top are considered to be (keeping the same as the oil/gas) Tier III, Tier II and Tier I. Tier III being the largest, near infinite reserves and readily available for sale/international consumption on a wide scale; Tier II is significant reserves and available for sale/international consumption but less then a Tier III and a Tier I would have limited reserves and largely only for domestic consumption.

I think that is a good idea. I presume the building of nuclear powerplants as in the quantity of them will be restricted as the nation might have enough knowledgeable people to operate a certain number but none extra? I know Saridan isnt probably in a great spot on the dynamic rankings, but historical RP and laws have pointed out at financing alternative energy sources, it is my goal to build a few nuclear powerplants for energy production of the biggest cities. I hope that will be possible?

The weapons thing is an entirely seperate subject in which I'm sure we limit their construction and might even ban them. I think they are RP killers and should just be regarded as not possible for creation or something. But if able to be build we should only allow the strongest nations in the ratings to have them, like the real world.

Historically the availability of nuclear power plants has never been an "issue" per se, the introduction of certain countries with uranium and those without it might present some interesting RP scenarios. My theory on the development of peaceful nuclear technologies (i.e. nuclear power plants) has always generally been allowing countries to do so as long as its realistic (i.e. pairing up with a nation that has them already, having a historical background in nuclear power generation, contracting with a known nuclear power corporation to develop them (this is tied with number 1/2), etc.)

For those players actually interested in trade, this can be a good departure point.

If we start seriously looking at whether we have stuff beyond ones that have been and are controlled, we could say what we are putting on market (if withhold then holding back economy) and what on market could be available to everyone. We could still have exclusive deals to insure supply.

Kalistan has long RPed with the following Resources:

Coal (from at least 3999)- http://forum.particracy.net/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=92&p=97892#p97892
Iron- http://forum.particracy.net/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=92&p=97761#p97761
Lithium, Magnesium, calcium and potassium as well as limited quantities of gold and zinc- http://forum.particracy.net/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=92&p=138763#p138763
Bauxite- http://forum.particracy.net/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=92&p=158981#p158981
Copper (limited Exploitation)- https://forum.particracy.net/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=92&p=154306#p154306

And most recently helium which is generated as a by product of fusion reaction, but which is not exploited commercially, and titanium and silicates which are byproducts of our solar and geothermal industries. http://forum.particracy.net/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=92&p=177523#p177523 and http://forum.particracy.net/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=92&p=180495#p180495

I am sure there are additional ones that have been RPed, but I can't think of them now.

I would happy trade Uranium for these ones we are not listed as having. Kalistan has never explored for Uranium deposits, and wouldn't develop it if we had it.

To put it plainly, Kalistan won’t be having every resource on the list very few countries if only a handful have access to multiple. This would put Kalistan on a completely unrealistic playing field.

Kalistan according to this list has: Bauxite, phosphorus, uranium, silicon, and sulfur.

Should Kalistan want to give up one of those for a specific resource (outside REE/REM) I’d be perhaps up for a switch given there is some background RP but otherwise I’m fairly content with the randomness and General spread of the resources.

In all honesty if this is seriously something thats being considered count me out of PT classic.
Im not sure where the entire idea to regulate yet another aspect of PT came from while the playerbase remains small.
Its been long long established that natural resources are a thing that remains unregulated as long as RP is being done realistically. The fact that the announcement post says you put every nation in a random generator makes me laugh a little, so all the RP nations like Liore did is null and void and instead we go off some random generator? Ive already outlined the extensive RP ive done in regards to natural resources together with Xander in Istalia and the domestic ND RP on the subject which would, in this list, also become null and void.

While i acknowledge the fact im gonna be bombarded with allegations that im pissed about North Dovani only having 5 resources, im more pissed about the fact we have generally agreed more "regulations" simply doesnt work anymore in PT classic as our playerbase is already so incredibly small. We came to that conclusion with the rankings, which became voluntary, with the security council which didnt have permanent members anymore thanks in large part due to its permanent members being inactive. If we are truly going down this road again i really do not want to have a part in it and i thus sincerely hope that this suggestion of a natural resource map is to be disregarded.

I would like to further add a question, what situation led moderation to the statement that "oil and gas maps cleared things up so this will too."? What RP posts have been considered powergaming when natural resources have concerned? As far as i can observe, everyone till now roleplayed the matter of natural resources maturely and responsibly. Again, if this simply came forward after discord statements that did not materialize in actual RP then be clear about it.

I could also go into detail on why i think North Dovani should have a far wider range of resources but there is no point, its clear to me that isnt gonna help my case in any way.

Well, basically you're saying a RNG retcons a thousand year old RP?

Are you kidding me, man?
