International trade minister Ramaeshwara Ayyar shot dead in Thikkonagama
     3 February 5421

International trade minister Ramaeshwara Ayyar has been shot dead by communist terrorists in Thikkonagama. Earlier this afternoon, local news sources reported police were responding to a major incident in the capital of the state of Kalam Nadu. Throughout the course of the day, it emerged that a radical communist terrorist had shot the minister two times as he emerged from his car outside a local government building. Ayyar’s security personnel eliminated the terrorist after he fired the second shot.

Ramaeshwara Ayyar served as international trade minister for over three years, having been appointed to the role by Keshav Raj before his death last year. Throughout his political career, he was a prominent advocate for deepening trade connections with international partners including Beiteynu and Luthori. He had been in Thikkonagama to meet with regional leaders on how the government could support local businesses to expand into foreign markets.

In the wake of the assassination, the armed forces have announced they will support local, regional and national police forces to restore order throughout the country. Security presence at government buildings and in public places has been stepped up. Defence minister Chandraprakash Bachchan said the military would take “all necessary measures to protect the Vascanian people”. Prime Minister Krishan Patvardhan has yet to make a statement on the assassination but he is expected to address the public later this evening.

Imperial Army seizes control of the Vascanian government
     4 February 5421

General Vinay Talavalakar of the Imperial Army has declared martial law in Vascania following the assassination of government minister Ramaeshwara Ayyar yesterday. In a televised address to the population, he said the civilian government led by Krishan Patvardhan had failed to protect the Vascanian people and pledged to restore order. At the same time, the armed forces have taken control of government buildings and arrested the former prime minister.

Numerous senior figures in the governing Vascanian National Alliance have offered their support to Talavalakar and the armed forces. Former navy officer Yatnesh Toleti, a rival of Patvardhan, read a short statement on behalf of a group of pro-military legislators. In the statement, they express their gratitude to Talavalakar and condemn the “corrupt and negligent actions” of the former prime minister.

Patvardhan’s removal follows a period of political instability in Vascania that began with the death of Prime Minister Keshav Raj last year. Patvardhan was an unpopular replacement and struggled to unite his party behind his leadership. In the past few months, there have been numerous reports of internal movements against the prime minister. The exposure of a corruption scandal during his tenure at Imperial Vascanian Oil provided the first sign that his premiership was threatened. The assassination of a government minister was the final straw.

Vinay Talavalakar appointed senapati by Emperor Parahan

In a simple ceremony earlier today, Vinay Talavalakar was officially appointed to the role of senapati by the Emperor. In accepting the appointment, Talavalakar pledged to protect and defend the Vascanian people. The appointment follows a period of political volatility in Vascania. At the beginning of last month, Talavalakar and the Imperial Army stepped in to restore order following the assassination of a government minister under the administration of Krishan Patvardhan.

The role of senapati has its origins in ancient Vascanian history. At this time, it was a senior military position appointed directly by the monarch. The modern form of the role will function in a similar way. Talavalakar will be given extensive powers by the Emperor to restore law and order throughout the country and defend Vascania’s interests in the international sphere. In this role, he will be supported by a carefully selected council of advisers.

Since the removal of the Patvardhan government, public opinion polling has shown strong support for the actions of the Imperial Army. According to official figures, Talavalakar is the most popular Vascanian leader in half a century. Even before his appointment as senapati, Talavalakar took a series of important decisions to restore faith in the Vascanian government, including ordering the arrest of over two hundred national and regional politicians implicated in corruption. In response to a travel ban by the government of Nsanlosa, he announced the expulsion of all citizens of the country living in Vascania.

Speaking to the public in a televised address this afternoon, Talavalakar promised a period of “national rebirth”. In the past century, Vascania has achieved strong economic growth. A major factor in this growth has been exports of important commodities including oil and tea. Talavalakar aims to capitalise on the opportunities provided by this period of economic expansion and restore the Vascanian elephant to its former glory.

Yatnesh Toleti named Vascanian prime minister following sham election
     7 September 5421

Former navy officer Yatnesh Toleti has been named as the next Vascanian prime minister. Toleti’s appointment follows a general election that was subject to massive interference by the Imperial Armed Forces. Under the leadership of Toleti, the Vascanian National Alliance won a majority over the newly-formed Party of Order and Justice. All candidates standing for election to Parliament required the approval of the armed forces.

Since the military seized control of the Vascanian government, Toleti has been a fervent supporter of the actions of Vinay Talavalakar. In exchange for his loyalty, he has been rewarded with the office of prime minister, though it is unclear whether he will wield any power. In his role as senapati, Talavalakar continues to govern the country as a military dictator.

International response to the coup has been mixed. Talavalakar’s rhetoric in the aftermath of his seizure of power was aggressively nationalist and sparked concerns that Vascania might renege on its international agreements. Nothing of the kind has happened though. At present, the only country to take action in response to the regime change is Nsanlosa. After initially implementing a travel ban, the government of Nsanlosa later abandoned the policy.

Talavalakar’s priority in his early months in power has instead been domestic. Less than two weeks after the coup, he had ordered the arrest of dozens of politicians on corruption charges. Though most of the charges were false, it is revealing that they generally linked the corruption to large corporations. According to academic Maya Kashyap, the arrests were an attempt to “send a message” to the business establishment in Vascania.

In spite of the repressive political environment, there were pro-democracy protests in a handful of major Vascanian cities on the day of the election. Under the direction of the government, the police arrested hundreds of people in Sabuda, Thikkonagama and Vora. Human rights organisations have condemned the actions of the government but have been denied the opportunity to speak with those arrested.
