NATIONAL: POLITICS ~ Coalition begins fight for Supreme Presidency
March 3083

Image
Casper Ash is determined to present the Coalition as a force for Governance.

ALYA – The Coalition today launched their campaign for the Supreme Presidency. Giving themselves a headstart on the other parties, the Coalition Conference in Alya, Nukeya was themed "Trust and Experience". Coalition President, Casper Ash began the rally last week by dissolving his own CUP and putting his Paty firmly behind the Coalition ticket. Two days later, the CMP and Green Solentia followed suit. The Byrne Foundation at today's conference announced it's intention to dissolve in the next few weeks, though insisted that only the political branch of their organisation would absorb into the Coalition, leaving the Corporation and Charity bearing the same name, free.

Mr. Ash's Supreme Presidential campaign is based on experience. Despite Mr. Ash only having served as Finance Secretary for a brief period, he is determined to place emphasis on the shared collective memory of all four constituent parts of the Coalition. The most frequently cited part of this experience drive is the CUP's record on budgeting. Mr. Ash proclaimed himself "deeply proud" of the tradition in Unionist budgets to lower overall spending to make way for tax decreases for the poorest, taking bottom %s out of the system, whilst simultaneously increasing spending on Health provision and Educational services.

Also mentioned was the CMP record on faith and morality and their long-term preservation of family values. Mr. Ash said that his Coalition would continue to support Solentian families with targetted legislation such as the broadening of the marriage laws to allow same-sex couples to obtain marriage contracts that would serve as "a fine example to Solentian youth of what it truely means to be a family." He also stood firm on the parties decision to push for same-sex adoption. He said this provided a "tolerant but family-oriented societal drive".

Mr. Ash, a homosexual himself, has been challenged on gay rights from pro-family groups who said that gay couples should not be permitted to adopt. Mr. Ash has rejected this firmly and has thus far been solidly backed by his colleagues in the more rightist CMP. An Ash Supreme Presidency, a party official told us, would include family values and principles but would not abandon same-sex families who should be rewarded and thanked for taking care of their children and promoting trust and faith.

Social Democratic Party Undergoes Changes
Party Adopts New Name, New Populist Stances

The Fuwan Examiner, May 3084

A labour union member at the SDLP "Protect the Republic" rally in May

HALION--- Following the massive party convention in January, the Social Democrats called for yet another large convention in the capital just five months later to respond to the myriad of right-wing bills being presented to the Senate, as well as to lay out some changes in the party.

Just like the January convention, Social Democratic leadership rented out the Capital City Convention Center and called for the party faithful to rally at the capital. However, this time, the Social Democrats decided to unveil a new party platform, party slogan, and even a new name.

"It's time to get Solentia moving again, and let the fat cats know that we've had enough of their friends in the Senate sending more kickbacks their way," said Supreme President Fay, who surprised many by appearing at the May event after making a point to avoid the January convention. "The far-right has taken away the fruits of the labour from the people and given it to those who need it most. You don't want a government like that, do you? I don't!"

The fiery speech drew thunderous cheers from tens of thousands of party members who rallied to the capital again. Supreme President Fay, who usually avoids the political battlefields, surprised many by his decision to crank up the heat on the right. However, he is expecting a difficult re-election campaign, and it is widely expected that the Social Democrats, now known as the Social Democratic/Labour Party, will lose seats in the upcoming election.

SDLP Launches Massive Legislative Campaign, Gears Up For 3093 Election
Budget and civil-rights proposals dominate the Senate

The Fuwan Examiner, April 3093

Image
Senator Joseph Augutis (SDLP-Orame), the party's Shadow Finance Minister, discusses the recent budget and taxation proposals in the Senate

HALION, Orame--- With the recent defeat of their incumbent president and the loss of Senate seats fresh in their minds, the leadership of the Social Democratic/Labour Party have barnstormed the most recent legislative session in the Senate. Five bills, all numbered Senate Resolution 32-36, have been proposed or voted on in the current session of the Senate. SR 33, a bill to reintroduce non-mandatory identity cards, passed, while a bill to reform foreign aid and trading rights failed.

More recently, however, the SDLP has been gearing up for the 3093 election by launching a massive economic proposal. The two bills, numbered SR 35 and 36, seek to adjust the federal budget and tax law, respectively. The budget proposal seeks to cut defence and law enforcement while raising investment in tourism, the environment, trade and industry, infrastructure, and education and healthcare. The taxation bill would drastically change the income tax code to shift much of the current tax burden to the upper income brackets, creating a vastly more progressive system.

"Solentia's budget and tax law are not in line with our national priorities," said former Supreme President Ryan Fay, the party's leading advocate for the budget and tax reform. "We are not making the necessary investments in education, healthcare, and infrastructure that will keep us competitive in the global economy. Furthermore, our tax system is skewed dangerously to favor the rich, and we need to make it fairer and more efficient."

The economic proposals are not the only hot topic being discussed in the Senate. Recently, the SDLP made a vocal effort to stop several bills proposed by the Future, Hope and Engagement Party. Three of them, which concerned foreign policy, religion and civil rights, were voted down in what Senator Brandon Helmkamp, the SDLP Vice Chancellor, called a "coup", using fiery speech to decry the FHE's anti-civil rights bills.

In a rare move, Senator Helmkamp also sponsored a bill to repeal the FHE's Civil Rights Act, which was one of only four to pass. Senator Helmkamp said it was not terribly common for a direct repeal bill to come to the floor for a vote, but that the FHE's "madness" required special circumstances.

Finally, in another surprise move, former Supreme President Fay, who had announced his retirement from that office after serving over a decade, declared his party's support for the Republican Party in the upcoming election.

"Obviously, in the Senatorial elections we are hoping to make gains, but in the presidential election, our party is going to be endorsing the Republicans. They have been our most willing and cooperative partner as of late, and we would certainly work with them for Solentia now that I have moved on from the post," said Fay.

Fay's cabinet remains in power even after his departure from the Presidency, following the failure of the FIP to endorse the Ash Administration's new cabinet.

Three Cabinet Ministers Resign During Tumultuous Political Times
New Vacancies Increase Pressure On President To Form Cabinet

The Fuwan Examiner, July 3098

Image
Federal ministers Andrew Ackerman (left), Michael Gardner (middle) and Tim Mueller (right) convene during a Senate hearing

HALION, Orame---- As the problems facing the nation strengthen their grip, the political pressure has clearly taken its toll on the Senate.

Fiery exchanges have become common on the floor of the Senate after the FIP announced its alliance with the far-right FHE Party, and many senators say they have never before seen the kind of tension between the FIP/FHE and SDLP senators.

"It's become very cutthroat in there," said Senator Connor Kalo (SDLP-Shinatawa). "Our party has been targeted by those on the right for utter destruction."

This breakdown in cooperation between the parties was not without some small victories, though. Reform in the tax and budget system has allowed for a massive reduction in the deficit from roughly 1.5 trillion Solenars to roughly 500 billion. The massive deficit resulted from a huge demographic shift that saw tens of millions emigrate from Solentia in light of the efforts of right-wing parties to limit civil liberties. The resulting decline in population and GDP eventually led to a massive decline in tax revenue.

While the SDLP tried to offer a tax reform bill, it was not adopted. However, Supreme President Simon's new cabinet proposal, consistent with a Senate resolution ordering him to submit a cabinet and address the economy and budget, has promised the SDLP the Ministry of Finance, so the party will likely get another try at fiscal reform.

In the midst of all this, however, three long-time SDLP ministers resigned their seats to show support for the new cabinet proposal. Minister of Internal Affairs Tim Mueller, Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Michael Gardner and Minister of Education and Culture Andrew Ackerman had all served in their respective positions since the second Fay Administration took office in 3078. All had served well in their capacities. However, as the SDLP-allied Republicans control the presidency and are attempting to form a cabinet, the SDLP ministers felt that, after 20 years, it was time to move on and show solidarity with a new generation of leaders.

All three ministers, none of whom could be reached for comment, were confirmed to be still in service to the SDLP, though likely in an advisory role.

Reflecting on 60 years of cultural and political domination

A letter sent to his party by the former President of the Republic of the Solent, Velio Maggiorelli, now retired, has recently shaken the public and split the headquarters of the Future, Hope and Engagement Party. This is the letter:
Image

Dear friends of FHE, dear voters, dear citizens of Solentia,
today I want to reflect on the heroism of the FHE that marked this country for some time. Our party was born in 3040 and already six years he managed to collect 30% of the votes, winning a reality as thriving and full of proposals for the future. These proposals were: liberalization, federalism, devolution, democracy, religion. At that time, the monarchical revolution of the Whig Party was in progress, a party that was later ousted by the Senate on grounds of corruption. The FHE Party foiled with the help of the Democratic forces in this country, then the threat that hung over monarchical Solentia. For years the party then had to fight its ramifications of this result, because of attempts restorers of the Unionist Party, but never succeeded in doing so. Meanwhile, in 60 years of domination of the Senate, FHE has fully achieved its objectives. But at what price? The resistance of democracy, of course. The more entrepreneurial freedom of our citizens, for sure. But also the drama of mass emigration. From 3090 to today's 450 million citizens have fled the country. Perhaps because of restrictive laws on civil rights, perhaps because of the prohibition against clandestine affairs and smoking, alcohol and drugs. From the right principles (such as health, family, etc ...) people have fled. Today we are well drained with a country and a liberal reform that could not take his last step: the flat tax.
I think that, given the current situation, the party itself should reflect on their situation, since 37% of the votes from that of 3074 to 14% at present there has been a true diaspora of voters. In the recent proposed legislation in the Senate, the party was defeated by the force of the Free indifferent and communist Socialist Party. This is a populist force that was able to enter our our democracy, and now they hardly come out in short, how could that happen? What mistakes have been made? From where to start? For the FHE it’s time for a change to be reborn..
I wish that my great party, that I have driven for years and I've seen come along with two great Presidents as Sfini and Birgulli, have a speedy rebirth for the good of our country.

Sincerely,
Velio Maggiorelli

Carla Verolo leaves the leadership of the Coalition: the primaries elect Ryan Obem

ImageAfter over 26 years as president, Carla Verolo leaves his position as leader of the Coalition and FHE. "In recent years we have worked well, the party has reassembled his bed and found a great statement in the votes of citizens. We have been able to reaffirm our roots and defend the spirit of our Solent with force and vigor, we headed towards a republic new phase "presidential", thus giving more power to the head of state and a new coherence to the work of government, we started a federal reform, orienting education, infrastructure and bureaucracy in the work of regions, we defended the freedom of 'business and the autonomy of the market, we have ensured the welfare of weaker sections, we have helped families. we finally managed to build a true coalition, with the help of Friends of the IP and INF. Today, leaving the party leader, I look back and I think we did great things and I am sure that whoever follows me will understand this heritage and make them flourish in the future of our country. I thank all those who supported me."
After two elections for President of the Republic, Carla Verolo is now a senator emeritus of the Republic. His speech was met with applause and approval of all.

ImageFor a successor to Verolo, three candidates were: Faustino Montgomery (ex-INF, far right), Jack Shepard (ex-IP, center left) and Ryan OBEM (young conservative, charismatic). In the first round Ryan OBEM got 36% of the vote against 35% of Shepard and the 29% of Montgomery.. In the second round OBEM Ryan has triumphed, gaining 57% against 43% of Shepard. "I'm very happy, I inherited a great legacy. I thank Carla Verolo for giving in recent years much energy and skill in politics and for supporting me in these primaries. Now we aim to be the party of 51% the Solentian"

NATIONAL: POLITICS ~ Senior Unionist warns against Factionalism
September 2149

Image
Michael Tirbairn is among the longest sitting Unionist Senators.

HALION – Michael Tirbairn, the Unionist Senator from Tesuhen, has written an open letter to the Supreme President Gideon Carney warning against a growing fear of factionalism in the NUR.

Mr. Tirbairn said in his letter that the “dramatic rise in liberal and left-leaning lobbyists getting their items onto the Senate floor should be a time to celebrate substantial debate” however added that he feared the party’s grassroots and Senate backbenchers would “go Yorkist”.

“We cannot return to the days of a split party, with factions and militias vying for control. Nobody wants a repeat of Kennedy House.” He told the Supreme President, who is serving his third and final term as Head of State.

Mr. Tirbairn, who is a reknown liberal-leaning Senator of the Flick Lyons generation, called upon the Supreme President to host a substantial but speedy primary for the NUR nomination in two years time and not to let the party fracture between now and then.

The Unionist bloc has a long history of deep-rooted factionalism. This is largely due to a number of crises that the party has faced which have led to splits in the party line. The biggest culmination of these was in the Kennedy House Crisis in May 2992 which led to the arrest of several party activists and a permanent disagreement between the York and Kennedy families. Today, the Kennedys and the Yorks still hols Senate seats however will not serve in the same cabinet. The Yorks ultimately allied with the religious right and the Kennedys with the centrists.

Beyond that, splits in the party have come in all shapes and sizes, another key example being the exit of the centrists from the party during the Dual-Governance era. The Party leadership, under Horace Callermansted, allied with a monarchist faction and ended up alienating their democracy-loving centre ground. The party only recovered under the hard efforts of Adam Torvellian and Lysander Seymour.

This time around, Senators fear that the split between the Yorkists and the Centrists will be ignited once more. The more traditionally conservative groups in Nukeya have already started hinting at a Rimmerick endorsement while the city-dwelling Oramen branches of the party have begun funding efforts towards their own including Finance Secretary Oliver Gardiner.
