Revolutionary Party Returns to Cobura
5th July 2763, http://www.revolutionarynews.cob

Image

The Revolutionary Party of Cobura today announced its return from exile, and made clear its intention to run in the next election in October of next year. The RPC returns to Cobura after more than 100 years since the mass exodus of the party to Deltaria, following the Dilganato conflict in which its paramilitary forces - the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cobura - fought bitterly against the reactionary Coburan government, following the extra-judicial killings of party members. In a speech to a gathered crowd outside the old party headquarters in Rio Irkawa, new party leader Antonio Marchese said that in the absence of the RPC there had been "an unquenched thirst for liberty and Socialism" amongst the Coburan proletariat and that "we have seen a once proud nation reduced to the mere plaything of a merciless clique of reactionaries, capitalists and liberal apologists".

The RPC has issued a ten point election manifesto which guarantees democracy, workers rights and liberty for all.

Antonio Marchese elected President

Coburan President, Antonio Marchese

The Revolutionary Party celebrated a good first election performance in its return to Coburan politics, as it took the position of President and 63 seats in the Coburan Senate. Snap elections had been called to take place following the inability to form a new cabinet and also to accommodate the arrival of the Revolutionary Party. In being elected to Presidential Office, Antonio Marchese becomes only the seventh different leader of the Revolutionary Party to become Coburan head of state in its long history. Speaking to a gathering of supporters at party headquarters, Mr. Marchese said that "Today marked a historic sea change in Coburan politics. With this electoral victory the rot in Coburan politics has been stopped." He went on to make clear that the Revolutionary Party would only support a coalition government that rejected wholeheartedly authoritarianism and capitalism.

It is expected that something of a moderate left-wing coalition will be formed, involving the Party for Marxist Unification, the Social Democrats and some of the other centre-left parties.

President denounces alliance with 'genocidal maniacs'
Breaking News - Coburan National News Network, http://www.cnnn.cob

Image
Coburan President Marchese

President of the Republic Antonio Marchese today denounced what he called 'an alliance with genocidal maniacs', referring to the Concords and Treaties that tie Cobura to Zardugal and the Axis. Zardugal has invaded Coburan on more than one occasion, most recently in 2706 and bitter memories remain amongst the Coburan population. The Zarduglian military has been accused of war crimes and genocide against both civilians and military personnel. The most prominent war crimes attributed to Zardugal against Cobura came in 2533 when the Zarduglian military attacked the city of Galts Gulch, going on a rampage of murder, looting and rape against the civilian population. There was also the gas attack on a civilian area a few months later in the war, when Cobura was pushing the Zarduglian military back across the border.

President Marchese, speaking to the Coburan Senate after proposing a withdrawal from several treaties linking Cobura to Zardugal, urged the members of the Senate not to insult the victims of Zarduglian war crimes by "entering into a cosy pact with people who desire to enslave us, and who have committed grave crimes against our people". He also argued for Cobura's economic sovereignty, singling out the free trade pact when he said, "we, as a sovereign nation, reserve the right to impose the economic measures we see fit to ensure the stability of our economy." Asked specifically if he intented to impose tariffs against Zardugal, President Marchese replied "If we see a reason to deploy tariffs or quotas against Zardugal, then we will do so. However, we are not singling out Zardugal on that front, we will use tariffs against anyone if we see fit."

CNSO releases 3 year economic forecast
June 2765, Coburan National News Network

Image
Finance Minister Jeff Bennett

The Coburan National Statistics Office has released its forecast for the Coburan economy over the next three years, following a press conference held by Finance Minister Jeff Bennett. Mr. Bennett stressed that economic conditions were improving, following significant government investment in the economy in the form of subsidies and other initiatives. The most recent government budget also allocated several funds into the Education system - a move Mr. Bennett said was 'long overdue' - in an attempt to improve the quality of the workforce. It is believed by many commentators that the government is preparing to 'step in' and take a 'tighter grip' on the Coburan economy.

The forecast estimates that going into January 2766, Gross Domestic Product will increase by over 3% and GDP per capita will rise by 2.6%. The budget surplus of 90 billion Cobur is expected to rise to 130 billion - although this money is likely to be spent at some stage. By 2767, GDP is expected to grow by another 4% and GDP per capita by 2%. Finally in 2768, GDP growth is estimated to grow again by 5.2% with GDP per capita growing at 2.3%.

Zardic Ambassador urges Senate against treaty withdrawal
Coburan National News Network, http://www.cnnn.cob

Image
President Marchese looks on as the Ambassador speaks to the Senate

The ambassador of Zardugal addressed the Coburan Senate today with a plea to vote down a proposed piece of legislation, that would see Cobura withdraw from several treaties linking it to Zardugal. The proposed 'Coburan Sovereignty Act' would see Cobura withdraw from no less than five treaties, including a free trade agreement with Zardugal, and a military pact with the Axis Alliance. Most of the treaties were signed following the most recent Coburan-Zardugal war in 2706, and are regarded by members of the Revolutionary Party as being 'imperialist' in nature and designed to 'enslave' Cobura to Zardugal. The Republican Party on the other hand regards them as being a 'stable' path to peace, and an economic necessity.

Speaking to the packed Senate, the Zardic ambassador adopted an accusatory tone toward President Antonio Marchese and the Revolutionary Party, claiming the party had a 'violent and putrid past'. The ambassador then went on to denounce what he deemed a 'hatchet job' against Zardugal, and stressed that the treaties ensured good relations and 'put in stone a future of stability'. Referring to Antonio Marchese's statements against the treaties, he suggested that they were 'fabricated history and propaganda' and that the 'terrorist' Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cobura were the real threat to Cobura.

Immediately after the ambassador had finished, President Marchese stood up and addressed him directly, saying "I would suggest that you pick up a history book before you make such bold and patently false statements. " The President went on to outline the role that both the Revolutionary Party and the RAFC played in fighting against Zardic aggression, saying that far from being 'terrorists' and a threat to Coburans, that they had always defended Cobura. With a smirk on his face, President Marchese then accused Zardugal of being a 'ceaseless threat' to Cobura and said that Zardugal had murdered Coburan civilians. In closing, the President told the ambassador that Cobura was a sovereign nation, that must 'choose our own destiny'.

Antonio Marchese wins Presidency for the second time
December 2767, Coburan National News Network

President Marchese watches as the election results filter through

Leader of the Revolutionary Party Antonio Marchese, became Coburan President for his second time following the most recent election in the Republic of Cobura. After being elected in 2763, President Marchese lost the 2765 Presidency race to Ross Kane Jr. of the Radical Party, but following support from the returning Party for Individualism, he was able to achieve his second victory. President Marchese took 50.58% of the vote in the second round, with Ross Kane Jr. not far behind with 49.34%. Many commentators had predicted Ross Kane Jr. would win his second straight term, following the first round endorsement of the Republican Party, and had not taken into consideration the long standing ties between the Revolutionary Party and the Party for Individualism. Speaking to supporters following the victory, Marchese heralded the election as "a victory for civil liberties and human rights" and said he was looking forward to forming a new government.

In the Senate elections, the Revolutionary Party also made great strides, taking 98 seats, signalling a gain of 31 seats since the last election. The Republican Party remained the largest in the Senate, making a gain of 6 seats, leading to a total of 164. Of the losing parties, the Party for Marxist Unification lost 15 seats, taking them down to 83, still leaving them in a commanding position. The Radical Party and the Coburan Pride Party both suffered heavy losses, with the Radicals losing 62 seats to take their total to just 31. The Coburan Pride Party lost 27 seats, leaving their already small number of seats at 16. Some of the big gains on the night were achieved by the Party for Individualism and the Democratic Party. The PFI took 54 seats in their return to Coburan politics, while the Democrats made a gain of 11 seats, making their total 54 seats in the Senate.

Early reports indicate that a coalition involving the Revolutionary Party, the Party for Marxist Unification, the Social Democrats and the Party for Individualism is in the works.

'A new civil war may be on the horizon' says Defence Minister
November 2779, Coburan National News Network

Image
RAFC Commander, Miguel Rodriguez

Following the departure of the Party of Marxist Unification from the Socialist government in Cobura and its announced intention to begin a war against "property owners in Egato and against foreign powers" the Coburan Defence Minister warned against a possible civil war. The dispute is believed to have emerged following the refusal of the Coburan senate to agree to subvert all paramilitary groups under the banner of the PMU. There has also been a spat between the PMU and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cobura who are unhappy with the PMU's militia group using the same name as the RAFC. The RAFC had promised swift and decisive action against what it deems 'usurpers' and has demanded the PMU cease using the RAFC name.

Making a brief statement on his way to an emergency government meeting, Defence Minister Miguel Horacio said that "a civil war is brewing" and that discussions were taking place between the RAFC and the Coburan Armed Forces in how to address the threat of the PMU militia. The minister declined to make any more specific comments about the situation involving the PMU. The RAFC commander Miguel Rodriguez however was more than willing to denounce the 'counter-revolutionaries' of the 'pathetic infantile [PMU] militia' and declared his intention to wage war against them. Commander Rodriguez also suggested that the RAFC would work 'closely' with the Coburan Army in defeating the 'terrorists' of the PMU and said the RAFC was supporting the government 'unconditionally'.

We will have more news on this breaking story soon.

Coburan Armed Forces takes military action against PMU militia
December 2779, Coburan National News Network

Image
Troops of the 2nd Armoured Division prepare to assault a strong point held by the PMU.

The Coburan Armed Forces has taken military action against the militia units of the Party for Marxist Unification, following the PMU's stated desire to pursue an armed struggle against the Coburan state. In a nationwide operation the Coburan Armed Forces - with the blessing of the Defence Minister - has raided and attacked several PMU militia camps, strongholds and offices, killing and arresting several high and low ranking PMU members. They have done so in conjunction with an offensive by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cobura, who have been subordinated to the CAF for the duration of this operation. The main thrust has been aimed at the Domale region, which hosts the headquarters for the PMU and also likely contains the main militia camps of their paramilitary forces.

Initial reports suggest that the PMU has taken moderate losses, following a co-ordinated strike on known staging areas in the Domale jungle by Coburan Special Forces. In the aftermath the Coburan Air Force has begun strafing possible retreat routes the besieged PMU paramilitaries may take, and the Coburan Army is deploying along the borders with Zardugal and Jakania. Military commanders predict that the bulk of the PMU will be finished within a few months, but any stragglers and fanatics left in the battlefield may fight on for a few years. It is believed that the PMU is losing much of their popular support, with their main voting base turning their backs on the PMU's violent and irrational tactics.

When the reached for comment on the operation the Defence Minister Miguel Horacio said "The initial reports are good, but we must continue to press hard. Any thoughts of an easy war must be left at the door."

'Final operation' against PMU militia gets underway
April 2781, Coburan National News Network

Image
A soldier of the 23rd Infantry Division in Egato province watches for signs of movement from his observation post.

The Coburan Armed Forces have begun what they are calling the 'final operation' against the PMU insurgency, codenamed 'Operation Curveball'. The operation aims to deny the PMU the ability to wage an effective guerrilla war by seizing vital terrain and flooding the countryside with ground troops. Over 600,000 members of the Army, including the Special Forces, have moved into the jungles, mountains, cities and forests, with the intent to push the PMU out into the open ground - where the Army High Command is confident they can be defeated. In the northern sector of the fighting, the Zardugal Armed Forces have mobilised along the border - on the request of the Coburan Armed Forces - in order to prevent any escape for the PMU insurgents. It is estimated that at the beginning of the conflict the PMU numbered just over 100,000 in its ranks, and with a six to one disadvantage they will look to stay hidden in difficult terrain, emerging only to launch hit and run attacks, an idea which prompted the current Army operation.

Chief of Staff Diego Andrade told reporters that the recent deployment marked the end of the PMU and their insurgency campaign. He also said that "With this new initiative, we will have the PMU cornered like the rats they are." and that "The PMU will have only three options: fight and die, flee and die, or surrender and live. If they have any intelligence whatsoever - and up until now I have no reason to believe they do - then they should choose the latter option." When asked for comments on what role the paramilitary Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cobura are playing in the current conflict however, the Chief of Staff was evasive, saying "The RAFC are not part of the Coburan Armed Forces, so I can't say they have any role at all." When a reporter questioned him on this, referring to eyewitness accounts of the Army and RAFC working in conjunction, Andrade told him "Look, the RAFC is not an official part of this operation. They have help to offer us, and they have co-operated - that is true, but it is not officially sanctioned."
