Shields of Liberty

OOC: I'm not sure where else to put this, since there isn't a slot for "domestic RPs." Anyway, this is an RP designed to illustrate the various aspects of Mordusian political culture since the domination of the MAU, highlighting some unique aspects of this libertarian state.

Freedom Palace, Port St John, Hosamia, Mordusia

President Ludwig von Hazlitt sat in the central conference room with the rest of the cabinet, sipping a cognac and staring out the window. Since the complete takeover of the Mordusian government by the Austrian Union, practically all functions of government have moved to the Party Headquarters in Port Saint John. Of course, officially, the capital of the Republic was still Rechtenburg in Talasor, but most of the business had been handled within the privately-owned confines of the massive Freedom Palace. In fact, at the current point, the power structure of the Mordusian Austrian Union and the Mordusian Federal Republic were almost indistinguishable. The Austrian Volunteer Force, as the party militia was now named, had been partially integrated into the national military, going through the same training regiments and the same armaments as the national armed forces. In fact, thanks to a sleight of hand by the Finance and Defence ministries (which had been under MAU control for eons), the Austrian Union managed to sleep even a few weapons of mass destruction into privately-owned hands - namely, the MAU. Of course, the records have since been totally destroyed, and National Archives had been totally purged of any reference to the WMDs in question. As far as the paper trail was concerned, they never existed.

"I am worried about the recent development of the Imperial Party." Everyone turned to look at Aleksandr Vasilyevov, the Interior Minister. "They may be attempting to rig elections and throw a coup. Naturally, this concerns us, as it would damage the carefully-held freedoms that we have guarded for so long." Minister of Justice, Sadok Rekjyavich agreed.

"I can't help but think they are in league with the Luthorians. Rumors have been going around that the heir apparent intends on reclaiming his title as Emperor of Mordusia. Lord knows what this might do to the libertarian paradise we have established here."

"The Luthorians are nothing but religious fascists hiding behind a crown," spat Aerou Sarjkowski, the Vice President of Mordusia and head of the Austrian Agorists faction within the MAU. "The first thing they will do is pound their religion on us and try to turn Mordusia into a bunch of mindless automatons, worshipping at the altar of their arrogance!"

"I don't think they are that bold," responded Maraidt Enilanuki, the Foreign Minister. "Mordusia and Luthori are not really at odds with each other, so I don't think they will attempt anything stupid. Besides, I believe our biggest concern is the Imperial Party domestically. If they throw a coup..."

"Which would be backed by the Luthorian bluebloods!" interjected Aerou.

"That is possible," nodded von Hazlitt. "We must prepare for a potentially successful coup. Assuming the coup occurs, what is our position?" Henry Rothbard, the Finance Minister of Mordusia, began.

"Well, currently, various organizations with MAU membership and sponsoring the MAU own almost 99% of the entire state of Hosamia. Beyond that, the military-industrial complex is dominated with MAU member corporations. If the IP wanted to make their coup permanent, and control the entire nation, they would have to basically abolish private property and nationalize the armaments industries - a surefire way to start a civil war. Naturally, the arms industry and the shipping industries would support us, as we've always been market-friendly. Hell, we would probably have more capital than the government itself." Xavier Gloeihdamae, Minister of Defence and head of the AVF, continued.

"We have been prepared for this possibility for some time. We have well-trained specialists guarding key locations throughout the nation. If an IP coup was successful, they would be able to move to destroy server controls, their backups, as well as government communications arrays to cripple their ability to respond. We could also damage any military response by destroying armouries we could not capture. Basically, even if the IP was successful at taking the government from us, they would be crippled almost from day one, and they would be unable to fully take us out. MAU loyalists could always move to the Von Hazlitt Estate - which, as mentioned, encompasses almost 99% of Mordusia and some land in surrounding states - and simply wait it out. We don't need to invade the other states. A defensive campaign along with prolonged guerilla warfare would make the IP coup a short-lived one." President Ludwig von Hazlitt nodded and stood up.

"Well, I believe this meeting is ajourned. Our inspections will begin tomorrow."

"Von Hazlitt Estate" Office. Man enters the room and goes towards secretary.
"Hi Mis, I would like to speak to Senor Von Hazlitt!" says the man. Ignazio Laquesta.
"He is busy. What would be the topic?"
"I know senor is busy. Is a deal to offer."
Secretary knew her boss had a lot of deals and never refused to talk about one. So she would inform, but what deal?
"Is a secret deal. Tell boss, how to put it? Information reached my ears there may be a need for guerrilla trainers for entertainment of your security employees"
"Secret? Why secret?"
"Just inform your boss. Here is my card" *Ignazio Laquesta, Dusty Knights foreign agent, phone numbers attached*
"Tell him, we can get *slowly speaks with fear in voice* ADOLFO BASTA for him"
"I will"
"You are very beautiful Senorita. Hasta La Vista!" Ignazio takes off his hat and leaves the room.

ooc: If such information would never receive Ignazio through any channels then disregard the post.

OOC: There really isn't any way you could have heard about it - and really no way you could have gotten to Freedom Palace - but...hell, why not?

Parade Ground, Freedom Palace

Xavier Gloeihdamae stood on top of the high balcony overlooking the AVF Sturmverwüstungeren. It was the final troop review before he went to inspect the WMD storage and launch facilities. As long as everyone is prepared, he thought. Then nothing can go wrong. The final salute was given as the Defence Minister went to turn back inside, when he was approached by a staffer.

"Sir, this card was left for you." Xavier took the card, wondering how anyone could have possibly even left it here, but figured, hey, it's worth a call. He went back to his office and got on the secure line, and waited for it to click through.

"Hello? I believe you left your card."

Mountain Complex, North Hosamia

"Oh, no, that shouldn't be necessary." Colonel Sharmann walked with the base overseer down the massive warehouse full of armoured vehicles - tanks, self-propelled artillery, and the like - all with not the Mordusian crest, but the Austrian crest. "The leadership is worried, but I don't think any Imperial coup would be severely detrimental. I don't think they are that stupid."

"Of course not, but it's best to prepare for the worst. Now, for the last part of your inspection, I suppose I should take you to the nuclear launch facilities..."

Port Saint John, Hosamia

On the streets, there wasn't much notice of any of the events taking place within the walls of the Austrian Complex. However, the nightlife population was well aware of the situation. Bars and clubs and the drug market in them (all forms of typically illicit drugs - cocaine, heroin, etc - were completely legal in Mordusia) began making huge amounts of profits as prices soared in the fear of an Imperial takeover of government meaning an end to the markets they enjoyed. Of course, even if the IMperial Party outlawed the markets, they would still be there, just further underground. That was the problem with all moral crusaders (and socialists) in government - they were stupid, and didn't understand markets. Markets for goods can't be destroyed, only driven underground, thus creating more crime than they said they were stopping. This is true of drugs, of weapons, of anything. Outlawed markets just make them seller's markets, rather than buyer's, leading to further exploitation. The Austrians understood this, and legalized everything.

Of course, people were peddling firearms with soaring prices as well, knowing that an outlawed drug trade would mean that the entrepeneurs would need to arm themselves to protect against overzealous cops. Some could be bought of course - especially the ones that frequented the bars - but others would have to be dealt with.

"Senor Xavier, I hope"
...
"You must be wondering where I know about your situation and plans.. See, I was discussing with my good friend Mikhael on having finance for our Dusty Knights organization in Gaduridos and he said something in lines, that Mordussia would not give us money (please let me finish I promise to be quick) but would maybe be interested in guerrilla trainings. We have guerrilla veterans who (for a reasonable price) would be happy to train your security officers. Including senor Alfredo Basta!"
ooc: I know, somewhat lousy excuse for finding out info, but we can assume Mikhael was someone within administration who knew about what was going on. Or we can not, that is up to you :)
