LuthorianWith a large press conference organized at the Conference Hall of the Optima Massimo Palace Hotel in Romula, Istalian giant of Telecommunications Istelecom has announced one of the most impressive investments of recent years which has been described as a real technological revolution for the entire Country.
In fact, Istelecom has set itself the goal of extending the ultra-wideband network over most of the national territory by expanding the fiber optic infrastructure. A project called "Ultrafibra".
To date, optical fiber reaches about 40% of users while the rest of the country is connected through ADSL connections and 4G mobile connections (94% of national coverage) which, although they ensure good performance and upload/download speed, can not compete with the performance of the latest optical fiber developments, cutting off ultra-fast services and the quality of performance that fiber can offer not only millions of homes but also thousands and thousands of companies and business.
The big cities today are obviously the areas that offer the highest connection speed and the most varied systems: fiber optics, the 4G mobile network, free wi-fi points offered by the local public administrations, etc ... and these are the areas where today there have been major investments by private operators. On the other hand, the situation in the provinces and in the smaller centers is different, with broadband connections but based on outdated technologies, while the most isolated areas have important shortcomings. In fact, private operators concentrated their investments in the most "profitable" areas and where the profit margin was higher and above all safe.
Precisely for this reason many have seen this initiative by Istelecom as a very risky operation given the risk of lost returns investing in areas where the profit would be very low or even zero and for this reason some rumors refer about contacts between the giant of telecommunications with the newly installed government in view of what has been defined as a vast national strategic plan that would see the state intervene in support of Istelecom for coverage in the areas defined as "market failure" and therefore would see the Ministry of Telecommunications and Infrastructures to cover a considerable part of the investment announced by Istelecom.
But Istelecom has not only envisaged investments in the field of fiber-optic infrastructures but has also announced that part of the investments will be dedicated to the development of an all-Istalian technology that could increase the speed of internet connections up to 1 Terabite. This is a project that is the result of the collaboration between the Telematic Research Institute of Milona (IRTM), the National Interuniversity Consortium for Telecommunications and the Istelecom which gave life to an optical phase modulator realized in graphene and silicon. It is an innovative photonic device used for the conversion of electronic data into optical data in an extremely efficient manner. The new device has dimensions of about half a millimeter, is potentially compactable up to a tenth of a millimeter and is based on silicon micro-photonics (the so-called "Silicon Photonics") and a single layer of graphene, carbon monoatomic layer with lower thickness one billionth of a meter.
The research conducted by the mixed group showed that the development of silicon components with the use of graphene is promising in this context. It is possible, in fact, to create new devices of this type using the same infrastructures and the same technological processes used to produce the microelectronic components, thus without major further development costs. The peculiar physical properties of graphene - material compatible with these technologies, economical, and particularly high performance - can add functionality to the new devices achieving performances unattainable until now.
In this regard, Carlo Connestabile, IRTM researcher, said:
The phase optic modulator, whose functionality has been demonstrated recently, together with the other new components that use graphene, can become an essential piece for the development of telecommunication and data platforms with very high density and speed, necessary to support the tumultuous increase in transmissions required by the new 5G platforms, the 'smart manufacturing' (the 'fourth industrial revolution') and the 'internet of things'.
There is a great potential and Istelecom has definitely smelled the deal, given that with its widespread presence in many markets, especially the majatran ones, the company could further consolidate its position in the market within a decade and become a leader in very high speed connections.
For Istalia this opens up further prospects, given that on the table of the Foreign Minister there would be a draft of a continental cooperation proposal within the Majatran Alliance to develop the infrastructure to expand access to the network and therefore the wideband.
